Evaluation of Behavioural Skills Training with Volunteers Teaching Motor Skills to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Evaluation of Behavioural Skills Training with Volunteers Teaching Motor Skills to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
Reaching early motor milestones is essential for positive growth and development. Individuals with developmental disabilities may fail to reach these milestones due to gross and fine motor impairments. However, very few physical education programs address motor development issues that may be a concern for individuals with developmental disabilities. The Special Needs Activity Program at Brock University capitalizes on university student volunteers to support individuals with developmental disabilities in developing motor skills. Evaluating various methods to train these volunteers may positively impact training outcomes, and save valuable time and resources. This research employed a mixed methods evaluation to evaluate volunteer training through: (1) a component analysis of behavioural skills training for teaching volunteers how to also use this methodology to support individuals with developmental disabilities in a movement program; and (2) a thematic analysis of the volunteers' experiences and approaches to teaching this population. The component analysis results were variable across participants; however, following all training phases, all volunteers met a predetermined performance criterion. Through a qualitative analysis five themes in the volunteers' approach to teaching individuals with developmental disabilities were identified: individualization, respect, collaboration, flexibility, and commitment. Strengths and limitations of this evaluation are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided.

Death Receptor Signaling Controls Prostate Apoptosis in Vivo and in Vitro

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Death Receptor Signaling Controls Prostate Apoptosis in Vivo and in Vitro
Androgen withdrawal induces apoptosis of the prostate epithelium and regression of the gland. This process is morphologically well characterized, but the molecular mechanisms are poorly defined. For instance, whether apoptosis is initiated by the mitochondria (intrinsic pathway) or death receptor (DR) signaling (extrinsic pathway) was previously unclear. In my studies, I utilized a highly accurate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methodology to test the hypothesis that DR signaling is necessary for castration induce prostate regression. The results of these experiments support the hypothesis that TNF (tumor necrosis factor) signaling is required for castration induced prostate regression. Previously, it was known that androgen withdrawal causes up-regulation of the cytokines TGF (transforming growth factor beta) and IGFBP3 (insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3), while causing down-regulation of FLIP (flice-like inhibitory protein), the inactive homolog of caspase-8. I next tested the hypothesis that androgen withdrawal also induces up-regulation of TNF. Utilizing immunoblotting and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), I determined that TNF protein and stromal derived Tnf mRNA rapidly increase in the rat prostate following androgen withdrawal, indicating a paracrine role of TNF. I also determined that soluble TNF is able to rescue the prostate regression defect observed in Tnf super>-/-/super mice. I next determined that TGF is necessary for castration induced prostate regression and that TGF induces FLIP decline in vivo. This is a key step in understanding the potential crosstalk between the TNF and TGF signaling pathways in the prostate during androgen withdrawal. I also further characterized the regulation of Flip transcription by the androgen receptor (AR) and the transcription factor Foxo3a in vitro. Finally, I determined that modulation of FLIP protein sensitizes prostate cancer cells to death receptor ligand induced apoptosis in vitro. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of prostate apoptosis is vital in the development of new prostate cancer therapy targets that induce apoptosis downstream of the AR.

Evaluation of Teacher Implementation of Nutrition Education and Physical Activity Into the Curriculum in the Hamilton County Head Start Program

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Evaluation of Teacher Implementation of Nutrition Education and Physical Activity Into the Curriculum in the Hamilton County Head Start Program
Objectives. To determine the extent to which the I am Moving/I am Learning/Harvest of the Month program was incorporated into the curriculum by Head Start teachers after an in-service on the program. Design. Observational StudyParticipants/Setting. Head Start teachers (N=24) in 12 classrooms located in 4 regions of Hamilton County, Ohio. For each region, three classrooms were selected based on their predicted level (low, medium, high) of program implementation into the curriculum. Outcome Measures. Number of fruit and vegetable activities and physical activities. Methods. Implementation was assessed using teacher-generated lesson plans for the fall period after the initial training (N= 12 days) and winter after a booster session (N= 12 days) and direct observation, with videotaping, in the classroom (N= 3 hours/classroom). Videos were coded using an observational tool. Surveys were used to collect demographic data from the teachers. Results. There was no significant difference between the classrooms (low, medium, or high) for the number of physical activities and fruits/vegetable exposures in the lesson plans or in the classroom. There was a significant decrease (p>0.05) in the number of fruit and vegetable activities from the fall lesson plans (M=11.42) to the winter (M=3.92). Structured physical activities were strongly, positively correlated with children's use of the program kits for physical activity during unstructured time (r= +0.66, p>. 05). The structured fruit and vegetable activities were positively correlated with the unstructured fruit and vegetable activities (r=+0.77, p>. 05). Conclusion. The booster training session appeared to have no affect on program activities listed in the lesson plans. In addition, there was no significant difference in the level of fruit and vegetable or physical activities between the groups of varying predicted implementation. In the classroom observation, the structured physical activities positively impacted the children's physical activity during unstructured time. Further teacher training is needed to ensure the quality as well as quantity of physical activities and more attention is needed in the area of fruit and vegetable exposures for this age group. The Harvest of the Month feature was an underutilized component of the program and needs additional restructuring to encourage use by the teachers in the future.
