Researchers often collect continuous consumer feedback (“moment-to-moment,” or MTM, data) to understand how consumers respond during a variety of experiences (ranging from viewing a TV show to undergoing a colonoscopy). Analyzing how MTM judgments are integrated into overall evaluations allows researchers to determine how the structure of an experience influences consumers' post-experience satisfaction. However, this analysis is challenging because of the functional nature of MTM data. As such, previous research has typically been limited to identifying the influence of heuristics, such as relying on average intensity, peak, and ending. We develop a Bayesian functional linear model to study how the different “moments” in the MTM data contribute to the overall judgment. Our approach incorporates a (temporally) weighted average of MTM data as well as specific “patterns” such as peak and trough, thus nesting previous approaches such as the “peak-end” rule as special cases. We then apply our methodology to analyze data on TV show pilots collected by CBS. Our results reveal several interesting empirical findings. First, the last quintile of a TV show is weighted around four times as much as each of the first four quintiles. Second, patterns such as peak and trough do not play substantial roles in driving overall evaluations for TV shows. Finally, the last quintile is even more important for procedural dramas than for serial dramas. We discuss the managerial implications of our results and other potential applications of our general methodology.

As behavioral hypotheses about in-store decision making become more common in the marketing literature, there is a growing need for richer, more complete datasets in order to test them more carefully. We introduce a novel PathTrackerreg; dataset that captures consumers' in-store shopping processes, thus allowing researchers to start thinking about how to run such tests using actual field data. We propose an individual-level probability model that jointly captures three key aspects of a consumer's within-store behavior: which zones she visits, how long she stays in each zone, and what purchases she makes within that zone. After showing that our model offers an adequate description of the PathTrackerreg; data, we discuss the issues involved in testing several behavioral hypotheses using the proposed framework.

As data collection technologies improve and researchers continue to ask deeper questions about consumers' motivations and behaviors, path datasets will become more common, and play a more central role in marketing research. To guide future research in this area, we review the previous literature, propose a formal definition of paths, and derive a unifying framework that allows us to classify different kinds of paths. We identify and discuss two primary dimensions (characteristics of the spatial configuration and the agent) as well as six underlying sub-dimensions. Based on this framework, we cover a range of important operational issues that should be taken into account as researchers begin to build formal models of path-related phenomena. We close with a brief look into the future of path-based models, and a call for researchers to address some of these emerging issues.

We define the quot;TSP-optimalquot; path for each shopper as the shortest path that connects all of his purchases, and we study the systematic deviations seen in his actual behavior. We decompose the length of each observed path into three components: the length of the TSP-optimal path, the additional distance due to order deviation (i.e., not following the TSP-optimal order of category purchases), and the additional distance due to travel deviation (i.e., not following the shortest point-to-point paths). We then explore the relationship between these deviations and purchase behavior. Among other things, our results show a strong relationship between order deviation and basket size, but no association between travel deviation and basket size. Finally, we look at the implications of relaxing three of the rigid assumptions of the TSP by allowing for: (1) varying degrees of quot;forward-lookingnessquot; across shoppers based on their observed order of purchases, (2) the possibility of unplanned purchases, and (3) the possibility of planned category visits but no resulting purchases.
