Three Novellas

release date: Jan 01, 1997
Three Novellas
This collection comprises the three winning entries of the 1997 novella competition judged by George Garrett: TomWhalen''s And Earth on Its Frozen Journey, first place; John S. Walker''s Days of Captivity, second place; and Richard Plant''s Deaths by Drowning, third place. And Earth on Its Frozen Journey is the bitter-sweet initiation chronicle of a group of neighborhood kids who live an almost enchanted life, like Dylan Thomas''s protagonist in "Fern Hill," until Time begins to lead them to the darker realizations of death and sex, and the children, green and golden, as Thomas so beautifully put it, follow Him out of grace. John S. Walker''s band of tortured misfits in Days of Captivity are thrown together at a veteran''s hospital in Virginia. These are men blinded, paralyzed, deafened, and limb-shorn, not so much out of the heroism of war as their own folly. This is the agonizing story of a group of fragmented men trying to enter the real world again, a world of feeling, and their women, wives and girlfriends, who desperately try to help them enter it. Richard Plant''s Deaths by Drowning takes the reader into an arena of realistic horror as a man and his son try to come to terms with a murder/rape they encounter on a fishing trip. Consumed by his hatred of the man who shot and beat him and disgusted with the ineptitude of law enforcement officials, Gray Morrison takes his pistol and goes among characters reminiscent of the rednecks from Deliverance to exact revenge. Judged by novelist George Garrett, director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Virginia, these stirring, powerful novellas are a testament to the genre our publishing world cannot seem to find a niche for. More fully developed than short stories but much more compact and focused than novels, the novella is still alive and well in America.

Oriental Rugs of the Hajji Babas

Oriental Rugs of the Hajji Babas
Fifty of the finest Oriental rugs collected in the past five decades are assembled here to illustrate the extraordinary achievements of village and nomad rug-weavers across Asia. Included are examples from Turkey, Iran, the Caucasus, Soviet Turkestan, Central Asia, and China. All belong or once belonged to members of the Hajji Baba Club, America''s oldest and most prestigious rug society. Although they are all referred to as rugs, these pieces were not exclusively intended to be floor coverings. Many decorated the walls of tents, were used as bags for storing or transporting possessions, served as saddle covers or blankets for horses and camels, took the place of coverlets, or provided a surface on which to kneel during prayer. They were intended to be utilitarian but also highly decorative, and their jewel-like colors, bold patterns, and lustrous wool have proved irresistible to Western collectors. Both pile rugs and flat-woven kilims are represented in this selection. Some are crowded with intricate geometric details worked in sublet shades, others rely on a few simple motifs and striking color combinations. Most were made in the nineteenth or early twentieth century. The so-termed classical rugs produced in court workshops in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which are not represented here, have largely disappeared from the marketplace, but it is still possible to discover fine examples of the more recent weavings. In addition to a detailed discussion and technical analysis of each rug, Daniel S. Walker, Curator of Ancient, Near Easter, and Far Eastern Art at the Cincinnati Art Museum, has provided a brief history of the Hajji Baba Club which should be of great interest to those who have recently fallen under the spell of Oriental rugs. Fifty color plates, a glossary of important terms, and a bibliography make this volume a particularly useful reference for specialists and non-specialist alike. -- Inside jacket flap.

Boundary Element Techniques in Engineering

release date: Jan 29, 2016
Boundary Element Techniques in Engineering
Boundary Element Techniques in Engineering deals with solutions of two- and three-dimensional problems in elasticity and the potential theory where finite elements are inefficient. The book discusses approximate methods, higher-order elements, elastostatics, time-dependent problems, non-linear problems, and combination of regions. Approximate methods include weighted residual techniques, weak formulations, the inverse formulation, and boundary methods. The text also explains Laplace''s equation, indirect formulation, matrix formulation, Poisson''s equation, and the Helmholtz equation. It describes how elements with linear variations of u and q (i.e. linear elements) can be developed for two dimensional problems, as well as for quadratic and higher order elements for two-dimensional problems. The text investigates the Dirac delta function as a sum of Eigen functions, including some methods to determine the explicit form of fundamental solutions for recurrent problems. The book also tackles the application of boundary elements to problems with both material and certain types of geometric non-linearities, and also the applications of boundary elements to plasticity problems. The text is ideal for mathematicians, students, and professor of calculus or advanced mathematics.

The Religious Revolution in the Ivory Coast

The Religious Revolution in the Ivory Coast
Walker''s impressive study is the first to link Harris''s background to the nature of his teachings and to discuss the dynamics of his movement''s development. Harris not only articulated the confusion and desires of his followers but also created new aspirations by helping them see what they could achieve in their own society and in their relations with Europeans. Harris is the only evangelist in the history of the African continent to bring such numbers to Christianity. Originally published in 1983. A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications, Second Edition

release date: Jan 29, 2008
A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications, Second Edition
In the first edition of his seminal introduction to wavelets, James S. Walker informed us that the potential applications for wavelets were virtually unlimited. Since that time thousands of published papers have proven him true, while also necessitating the creation of a new edition of his bestselling primer. Updated and fully revised to include the latest developments, this second edition of A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications guides readers through the main ideas of wavelet analysis in order to develop a thorough appreciation of wavelet applications. Ingeniously relying on elementary algebra and just a smidgen of calculus, Professor Walker demonstrates how the underlying ideas behind wavelet analysis can be applied to solve significant problems in audio and image processing, as well in biology and medicine. Nearly twice as long as the original, this new edition provides · 104 worked examples and 222 exercises, constituting a veritable book of review material · Two sections on biorthogonal wavelets · A mini-course on image compression, including a tutorial on arithmetic compression · Extensive material on image denoising, featuring a rarely covered technique for removing isolated, randomly positioned clutter · Concise yet complete coverage of the fundamentals of time-frequency analysis, showcasing its application to audio denoising, and musical theory and synthesis · An introduction to the multiresolution principle, a new mathematical concept in musical theory · Expanded suggestions for research projects · An enhanced list of references · FAWAV: software designed by the author, which allows readers to duplicate described applications and experiment with other ideas. To keep the book current, Professor Walker has created a supplementary website. This online repository includes ready-to-download software, and sound and image files, as well as access to many of the most important papers in the field.

The Applications of Some Statistical Procedures for Analyzing Spectral Data

The Applications of Some Statistical Procedures for Analyzing Spectral Data
The implementation of the fast Fourier transform and the availability of the high-speed digital computer has resulted in the widespread usage of spectral analysis methods in the analysis of random processes. Generally, most spectral analysis methods have involved the uses of power spectrum. This research is concerned with developing some useful statistical methods for analyzing such spectral estimates. Road profile data from transportation or highway engineering is used for exemplifying these methods. Three standard statistical procedures are illustrated, two applying to coherence estimates, and the third to power spectral estimates. A new statistical test based around a normalized coherence difference distribution is also included and enables the use of the standard normal distribution tables for testing for similar coherence samples. Dearest Mama

release date: Dec 10, 2024
Dearest Mama
A cache of letters leads to a journey of discovery that reveals the long and lasting consequences of war William S. Walker never knew his uncle, Fletcher "Bud" Blanton. Blanton had been killed fighting in Europe during World War II before Walker was born. Walker had heard stories about Bud, but for most of his life his uncle had existed only as a faded memory. That path changed when Walker opened a dusty cabinet forgotten in his garage attic and found a paper sack and a note in his father''s handwriting that read, "Go through before you throw away." The bag was filled with family photos, correspondence, and a collection of letters and postcards that his uncle Bud had written to his family during his time on the frontline as a US Army infantryman in Europe. The first letter he pulled from the bag opened with the line, "Dearest Mama." Walker''s Dearest Mama is Bud Blanton''s story. More than that it is a deeply personal family chronicle that resonates for all those left behind when servicemembers do not return home from combat.

German and Bosnian Voices in a Time of Crisis

release date: Nov 01, 2010
German and Bosnian Voices in a Time of Crisis
The 1992-1995 war in Bosnia, the most violent chapter in the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, forced more than 2,000,000 people from their homes. Europe witnessed the greatest refugee crisis since the end of World War II and Germany became the primary refuge for Bosnians fleeing the fighting. "German and Bosnian Voices In A Time Of Crisis" is the story of what happened during those war years and afterwards when nearly 350,000 Bosnians came to Germany. The story is told with precision and eloquence by William Walker, a journalist with intimate knowledge of Germany, his home for more than 30 years, and the Balkan region, where he worked often during the last two decades. "German and Bosnian Voices In A Time Of Crisis" began as a doctoral dissertation in 2005 at the Seminar of East European History of Heidelberg University. The author, William Walker, was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree for this study of the refugees'' time in Germany. The dissertation, which was the result of two years of interviews throughout Germany and the Balkans, was accepted with honors by the university in December 2009. In praising "German and Bosnian Voices" as an eloquently written, groundbreaking document, one of the university evaluators noted, "This work brings us closer to an understanding of the basic problem of German history in the 1990s. Above all it puts our focus on the victims of the history."

Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaires and Tables for Investigators and Clinicians

release date: May 01, 2016
Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaires and Tables for Investigators and Clinicians
The Rome Foundation maintains a major commitment to the creation and dissemination of good research in the field of FGIDs. To properly study patients having these disorders, we need to identify them in as precise a way as possible. Hence, we have proposed, created, and disseminated the use of diagnostic criteria and questionnaires for epidemiological and clinical research. As such the Rome criteria have been recommended by the U.S. FDA, the EMA, and other regulatory agencies for clinical trials, and they remain the only method used to diagnose patients by epidemiological surveys. To maintain this initiative for Rome IV, we developed an extensive multinational program to first create the Rome criteria through our Rome IV chapter committees, and then to validate, and translate the questionnaires containing these criteria research. We have done this not only for adults, but also adolescents and young children. This book, guest edited by William Whitehead, PhD, provides in one compact volume all that is needed for researchers and clinicians to perform studies in English-speaking countries. The book begins with an introduction by Dr. Whitehead, follows with chapters about FGIDs and the Rome IV process, and then contains a chapter on the development and validation of the Rome IV questionnaires. The second section is the heart of the book: 1) the diagnostic questionnaires for adult functional GI disorders, 2) the psychosocial alarm questions for FGIDs to help clinicians decide when to refer patients for mental health treatment, and 3) the diagnostic questionnaires for pediatric FGIDs with questionnaire sets for children and adolescents as well as neonates and toddlers. Finally the appendices provide supplemental information including a reference table of all the Rome IV diagnostic criteria, a comparison table between Rome III and Rome IV criteria for investigators who may have used Rome III in previous studies, and finally a psychosocial assessment flowchart created by the Biopsychosocial committee to guide clinicians in the biopsychosocial care of their patients.
