Riwenne & the Electrical Prophecy

release date: Apr 06, 2020
Riwenne & the Electrical Prophecy
A young priestess sworn to a forbidden goddess. A hard-won treaty to protect her people. But now a new prophecy could destroy their fragile peace. The teen prophet Riwenne has performed many miracles to protect her friends and save her city from the oppressive empire. Now she has a new ally, another nation who declared their independence and helped to defend her city. But when Riwenne shares her religious beliefs, the new prime minister of the neighboring country is reluctant to accept them. His people have been burned by priestesses before—and they executed the old priestesses for their crimes. As Riwenne tries to show her allies the power of magic, a mysterious circus appears in the city. Calling themselves the Scientific Circus, they are spreading a prophecy of their own—that electricity and technology can free humanity from the need for any gods. Their Chief Scientist challenges Riwenne to a contest between science and magic. She may be a divine warrior, but Riwenne can’t fight her way out of this. When violence isn’t the answer and people aren’t impressed by her miracles, she must find a new way to win people to her side. She can’t afford to lose the only allied nation that she has against the empire. Or she will be the next priestess to meet the executioner’s blade. The Artificial Knee

release date: Mar 16, 2020
The Artificial Knee
Spanning both the history and future of knee replacement, this unique book recounts how artificial knees have reached the stage they are today, and whether their performance can be further improved. The author, who has been designing artificial knees for 50 years, starts the story in the late 1960’s with the early pioneers; during the 1970’s, the principles for successful artificial knees were established. While many different types were designed, a small number have become by far the most widely utilized. Yet other types of designs, so far little used, along with new materials and the application of computer-assisted surgery, could result in significant advancements in the treatment of knee arthritis. Each chapter provides a detailed description of the origins of the ideas and principles and their rationale, followed by the latest information and evidence. The book begins with an overview of the history and background of the artificial knee, in terms of design and implementation and the thought leaders involved. Fixation, biomechanics, and the types of designs are discussed in detail, both what has worked and what has not, and why. Instrumentation, testing and tribology, and functional evaluation methods are also covered. The book concludes with a look toward the future possibilities for the field of artificial knees. An illustrated glossary of terms, is included for quick reference. The Artificial Knee: An Ongoing Evolution will appeal to orthopedic surgeons and researchers, medical academics and orthopedic companies, and to those with a general interest in artificial knees.

The Farmer and the Dolphin

release date: Jun 28, 2018
The Farmer and the Dolphin
At Garden City Beach, S.C., where no one seemed to hurry, the first indication of trouble was the staccato rumble of footsteps on the stairs. A sharp knock at the door came next. And when 86-year-old Betty Mincey opened up she faced law officers wearing guns. Three men, two from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and a federal agent from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, had come to investigate the report of a dead dolphin taken in a net set by her husband in front of the Mincey house that morning, Nov. 3, 2013. After questioning 86-year-old World War II Navy veteran C.P. Mincey, the officers told him he had violated the Marine Mammal Protection Act which cites the illegal taking of a dolphin as a federal offense. The accompanying S.C. DNR officer told him he had also broken state laws in setting and observing the net. Mincey’s explanation that he had made no attempt to take the dolphin found dead earlier that morning in his lightweight mesh net did not appear to matter to the officers. They charged the South Carolina farmer with killing a dolphin and his fine was eventually set at $6500. The events at Garden City marked the opening stage of a 15-month-long battle between the Mincey family and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Join South Carolina author William Walker for an in-depth, entertaining behind-the-scenes account of how Mincey, with the support of Latta S.C., attorneys LaFon LeGette and Alan Berry, won his case in a contentious federal hearing at Georgetown, S.C.

A World of Change

A World of Change
Anne S Walker grew up in the dormitories of a boarding school in the suburbs of Melbourne. Her initial career was as an early childhood teacher, then she sailed to England and worked as a community activist in London. Accepting an offer to work in Fiji, she became deeply involved for 11 years in early childhood education, women’s human rights, and public affairs advocacy, including the fight against nuclear testing in the Pacific. Those years led her to undertake graduate study in development communications in the USA, following which she was asked to help establish the International Women’s Tribune Centre in New York. This thrust her into the centre of a global campaign for women’s human rights that spanned the next three decades. From the IWTC headquarters opposite the United Nations, Anne and her colleagues met and worked alongside women from every world region on issues affecting their lives and the lives of their communities. Anne and the IWTC were involved in the historic series of UN world conferences on women held in various countries from 1975 to 1995. As well as writing of her work and the role of the IWTC in those momentous decades, Anne tells the powerful stories of some of the women she met at meetings, workshops and other events in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean and Latin America. She also tells of witnessing and living through some of the toughest times in New York’s history, from the moments when planes crashed into the World Trade Centre towers on September 11, 2001. This is an important memoir that takes readers inside the world of women fighting for justice and for an equal place at the tables where global policies and programs are developed and implemented.

The radio serenades him with romantic song and fast talk, seducing him like a barroom whore in a Saturday-night saloon. Marianne, Clinton Anderson’s wife of fourteen years, believed that Clint’s truck had become his home and his mistress. On a cool Pacific Northwest autumn morning, after leaving his marital bed, Clint Anderson walked out of his small Puget Sound bungalow not knowing what lay ahead. To him, it was another workaday, mundane Monday morning. But fate would have it different. He would head out from Seattle on a routine long-haul run to Denver, only to find himself hijacked and deadheading headlong into the new Wild West!

Witch Test
A teen girl in a test for magical powers. A dangerous encounter in the woods. What will she risk to become a witch? Rosa always dreamed of becoming a witch, and on her thirteenth birthday, she finally has her chance. The Seelie Court sets a test: follow a trail up the mountain to the castle. If she can make it on her own, she’ll be granted magic. The Fae promised her the test wouldn’t be dangerous, so she’s prepared to face anything. As she hikes through the woods, a mysterious old woman offers her powers without the test, and she won’t take no for an answer. She threatens Rosa by summoning deadly beasts—and Rosa has no way to defend herself. Will Rosa accept the stranger’s help and forfeit the test, or face death in the jaws of a mountain lion? Witch Test is a prequel short story to the Fae of Calaveras trilogy, and can be enjoyed at any point in the series. If you like teen witches, sarcastic Fae, and magical hijinks, then you’ll enjoy Kristen S. Walker’s stories of fantasy that takes flight.

Dynamic Analysis of Offshore Structures

release date: Oct 22, 2013
Dynamic Analysis of Offshore Structures
Dynamic Analysis of Offshore Structures appraises offshore structures, particularly the major sources of uncertainty in the design process. The book explains the fundamentals of probabilistic processes, the theory or analysis of sea states, and the random-vibration approach to structural response. The text describes the hydrodynamics of water waves, wave forecasting, and the statistical parameters associated with sea-states. The investigator can use Morison''s equation to calculate the impact of wave forces acting on slender members such as on lattice-type structures. Or he can employ the diffraction theory to calculate wave forces acting on large-diameter bodies such as concrete gravity-type structures. Other environmental forces he should be concerned with are the effects of currents and winds. The book examines the theory of vibration (including the spectral approach), the theory of vibration on multi-degree-of-freedom structures, matrix analysis of structural response, problems of fatigue, and soil-structure interaction. The book notes the importance of the method of analysis used, with emphasis on the following: dynamic analysis, frequency domain, and linearization of drag. Two types of analysis follow linearization of drag: deterministic analysis (applied in a series of design waves which uses the long-term exceedance diagram for fatigue); or probabilistic analysis (used to study the behavior of the structure during the extreme design storm and its long term behavior for a range of sea states). The book can prove useful for structural, civil, or maritime engineers, as well as for students in one-year courses in offshore structure analysis at the postgraduate or final-year undergraduate level.
