This is the text of the Rede Lecture given in the University of Cambridge by the Rt.Hon.Lord Jenkins of Hillhead on 10 May 1988. Lord Jenkins takes as his theme the relationship between Oxford and Cambridge over the centuries in an attempt to analyze their similarities and differences.
