Viewing the Bible Differently Updated and Enhanced
People view the Bible in different ways based on their education and their occupation. Every occupation has some training to it. Therefore, the thinking process is unique. When a scientist reads the Bible, that person will look for facts and figures. An economist might look for the money trail and money advantages. This book does not examine every view point. However, the authors hope that when you we read this book and you are a Bible study leader, you can adjust your teaching to the way your students think.

The Stranger

The Stranger
The Stranger by Albert Camus, is a French philosophical novel written in the mid-1940s. In the novel, we are introduced to our narrator, Monsieur Meursault. Meursault is a French man living in Algiers and has just received word via telegram that his elderly mother has passed away. He notes that he has asked for two days of leave from his job, even though his boss is quite annoyed by this. He is to travel to the Home for Aged Persons in Marengo, which is at least fifty miles from Algiers. He takes the bus and sleeps for most of the trip from Algiers to Marengo. Once he arrives in Marengo, he realizes he has a one-mile walk to the home. When he finally arrives to the home, he is greeted by the doorkeeper. The warden meets him in his office and tells him that even though Meursault all but abandoned his mother in this home, it was the absolute best decision he could have made. The director knows that Meursault makes very little money at his job and could not take care of his mother. He also claims that Meursault''s mother had made great friends and had enjoyed spending her last few years with people of her own age. Meursault had felt judged by the warden, but after this conversation, he agreed with the notion that his mother had been better off in this home, instead of living with him. We see Meursault rationalizing why he had not been to visit his mother much, as it cost him an entire weekend day on Sundays, the commute to the home was an hour each way, and getting a ticket for the bus was a hassle in and of itself. The director then informs, Meursault that he has arranged for a religious funeral ceremony to be performed the next day. Meursault knows that his mother was not religious and would not care. When it comes time for Meursault to see his mother, he does not want to see the body as it was already sealed inside the casket. This causes the doorkeeper to ask Meursault why, to which he responds he cannot think of a reason. The doorkeeper describes why the hold funerals so quickly in Marengo. He tells Meursault that it gets too hot there for them to keep the bodies for four or five days like Paris does. Meursault finds this topic interesting. The old man then informs him of the custom of allowing all the other residents to hold an overnight vigil by the casket before the funeral. Meursault finds this odd, but plays along. The doorkeeper offers him some coffee. Meursault gladly accepts and gives the doorkeeper a cigarette in exchange. Meursault eventually falls asleep in the room waiting for the elderly residents to arrive for the vigil. He is eventually woken up by the sound of people shuffling into the room. Once people are settled in their seats the only sound he hears is the sound of a woman sobbing in the second row. This perturbs him for a bit, but eventually he falls asleep again and sleeps until morning.

Fear and Intimidation

Fear and Intimidation
In the early eighties, the second Muslim I ever met threatened to kill me because he thought I was making fun of his god while I was asking another Muslim about the first Palestinian intifada (the many suicide bombings) in Israel. Little did I know then that I would ever study Islam and the Quran and write a book about the two subjects. Muslims are "commanded" in the Quran to believe in all the books/revelations that Allah has sent down to all mankind, which include the Old and New Testaments. Though Islamic scholars and Imams teach that the Old and New Testaments are corrupted and therefore should not be studied. The Quran says nothing at all about the Word of Allah as being corrupted. In fact, the Quran states that Allah "preserves his word." So when Muslims refuse to read or study the Bible, they are rejecting the word of Allah! In this book, the Quran and the Bible are quoted throughout, covering subjects like how the Quran actually glorifies Jesus above Muhammed by declaring that Jesus was a faultless man. A faultless man is a perfect man, which is more than just a man, because no man who has ever lived on the earth has been faultless except Jesus. This book is an effort to inform all, including Muslims, about Islam and the Quran so that we may better understand the fastest growing religion in the world and to give Christians what they need to know about Islam in their efforts to reach out to Muslims.

Toward a Mechanistic Understanding of Hepatic Insulin Action and Resistance

Toward a Mechanistic Understanding of Hepatic Insulin Action and Resistance
Second, we hypothesize that FoxO1, a key insulin-inhibited transcription factor, coordinately regulates both hepatic glucose and lipid homeostasis. We have developed a transgenic mouse model heterozygous for a knocked-in allele of DNA binding-deficient FoxO1 and have proceeded to dissect the mechanisms by which FoxO1 differentially regulates glucose and lipid handling. We found that while the former requires FoxO1 to bind to its consensus sequences in target-gene promoters, the latter proceeds via a co-regulatory action of FoxO1. Taken together, these findings reveal novel connections between the glucose and lipid "arms" of the insulin-signaling pathway and how they may go awry in the run-up to diabetes.

Knowledges, Controversies and Floods

Knowledges, Controversies and Floods
This research explores the views, beliefs and knowledges of experts responsible for flood management in Bangladesh. As one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth, and in response to the neglect of power-holding experts within the existing literature, this project analyses the differences between academic accounts of flooding, labelled the?prevailing understanding?, and the local expertise of those responsible for management. Relative to the entrenched narrative, local experts are surveyed and an alternate interpretation is constructed using their knowledge. This combination of textual and perception-based analyses accounts for the complex interrelations between competing forms of knowing. It is on this juxtaposition that the research contributes to new knowledge. The thesis is based on research conducted in Bangladesh between November 2007 and March 2008. To accomplish its objectives, using prominent debates as entry points, academic and government sources are used to account for the lineage of the prevailing understanding. On the basis of this narrative, qualitative interviews with 54 experts explore the construction of flood management knowledge and its relationship with decision making. The experts describe and justify understandings of flood management that are contextual, adaptive and indefinite, challenging many of the assumptions associated with the prevailing understanding. The findings inform several findings: that individuals close to the poverty line are uniquely vulnerable; that disasters merge with management to produce second-generation events; and that a hybrid socio-physical context is both a product and a producer of flood management knowledge. Overall, despite the already complex issue of flooding, managers in Bangladesh consider increasingly issues as diverse as poverty, environmental sustainability and economic and human development. Given the scope of the controversy surrounding flood management, the findings show how analyses of competing knowledges, assumptions and framings can aid the interrogation of prevailing knowledge to generate original findings.

The Effects of HIV, Obesity, and Methamphetamine Use on the Gastrointestinal Microbiome of Young Men who Have Sex with Men

release date: Jan 01, 2019
The Effects of HIV, Obesity, and Methamphetamine Use on the Gastrointestinal Microbiome of Young Men who Have Sex with Men
Introduction: Chronic inflammation is a major contributor to increased morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV. Research suggests that the composition of the gastrointestinal microbiome may be altered by HIV, resulting in a state of "dysbiosis" that exacerbates and perpetuates immune dysfunction. However, studies of HIV and the microbiome have thus far been limited by small sample sizes and poor control for confounding factors and have not considered potentially synergistic effects of comorbidities such as obesity and methamphetamine (MA) use. Therefore, the effects of HIV on the microbiome remain unclear. Methods: This dissertation includes biomarker, behavioral, and clinical data from 381 diverse young men who have sex with men. Microbiome composition was assessed by targeted sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene using rectal swab samples. In Chapter 2, we examined differences in microbiome composition between men with increasing levels of plasma HIV RNA. In Chapter 3, we split the sample into groups based on HIV and obesity and compared men who were HIV+ and obese to those with only one or neither conditions. In Chapter 4, we explored the effects of MA use on the microbiome while testing for potential interactions between MA use and HIV status. All comparisons utilized inverse probability of treatment weighting to control for confounding by numerous behavioral and clinical factors. Results: HIV, obesity, and MA use were all associated with shifts in microbial composition consistent with a pro-inflammatory environment. There was a dose-dependent relationship between HIV RNA level and severity of dysbiosis. Men who were HIV+ and obese had more severe dysbiosis than those with only one or neither conditions. Regardless of HIV status, MA users had higher relative abundance of many pro-inflammatory bacterial genera, with frequent users having the highest amounts. Conclusions: As multiple comorbid conditions can negatively impact the microbiome, interventions to address dysbiosis and reduce its inflammatory consequences should consider interactions between these conditions. Future studies should utilize analytic approaches such as those employed in this dissertation in order to limit the effects of confounding and improve comparability.
