Opening on Broadway on October 10, 1947, the musical centers on the life of Joseph Taylor, Jr., who follows in the footsteps of his father as a doctor, but is tempted by fortune and fame at a big-city hospital.

Drawing on a wide range of major literary voices, including Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, and Toni Morrison, as well as lesser-known writers such as William Attaway (Blood on the Forge) and Dorothy West (The Living Is Easy), Rodgers conducts a kind of literary archaeology of the Great Migration. He mines the writers'' biographical connections to migration and teases apart the ways in which individual novels relate to one another, to the historical situation of black America, and to African-American literature as a whole. In reading migration novels in relation to African-American literary texts such as slave narratives, folk tales, and urban fiction, Rodgers affirms the southern folk roots of African-American culture and argues for a need to stem the erosion of southern memory.

Connie Casey, an American heiress, has just returned from a series of scandalous adventures in Europe. Connie decides to go back to college and she wants to go to her father''s Alma matter, Pottawatomie College in New Mexico. Her father wants to be sure that Connie doesn''t get into mischief so he hires four professional football players as her bodyguards. The players learn that the college is in financial trouble so they donate their salaries to the college. They also find out that the college has not won a football game in their 75 year history so they join the team. Suddenly the team becomes the number 1 team in America. Meanwhile, bodyguard Clint falls in love with Connie and vice versa. Connie finds out that Clint is being paid by her father, and demands that the four players accompany her back to New York the night before the last big game. Will they leave? Will Clint be forgiven?
