Madame Melville

release date: Dec 16, 2020
Madame Melville
"Nelson, in his 100-minute play, intertwines two familiar themes: the sexual initiation of the young and the confrontation of American innocence by European experience. His hero, Carl, now married with children, reminisces about Paris is 1966. We see how, as 15-year-old student at the American school, he falls under the spell of a beguiling literature teacher. One night, after an extramural film excursion, Carl stays behind in her flat. For him, this offers a magical introduction to the world of art, music, adult emotion and Kama Sutra sex. For Claudie, the literature teacher, this brief encounter is largely a way of overcoming her devastation at the breakup of an affair. But what gives the play its peculiar charm is the tender collision between two people at different stages of their emotional cycle: Carl has what Henry James called ''the hungry futurity of youth'' while the messed-up Claudie has the restless solitude of the permanent other woman ... Nelson has pinned down with exact compassion what happens when two worlds collide." Michael Billington, The Guardian "There''s much talk of matters sensual in the play and offstage there''s the initiation of a minor; but sex isn''t exactly the theme. Rather it''s about loneliness ... there are moments when it threatens to decline into that cliché liberal fulfilling Paris ... versus boring, restrictive Dumbsville, Ohio. But Nelson, an American dramatist much performed in Britain, proves himself defter, subtler than that." The Times "What makes the play so special is the vivid precision of the writing ... [Nelson] achieves a surprising variety of emotion on what might seem a narrow dramatic canvas. At times the comedy is unashamedly broad ... Yet the writing also cuts remarkably deep, not least in the subtly understated closing moments when mortality suddenly intrudes on this Arcadian idyll. For beyond the touching sexual comedy, MADAME MELVILLE is an exquisitely painful reminder of lost love, lost innocence and lost youth." The Daily Telegraph

A Chronology and Glossary of Propaganda in the United States

release date: Sep 24, 1996
A Chronology and Glossary of Propaganda in the United States
The first of three volumes that will serve as a comprehensive and inclusive finding tool, this work defines propaganda in an uncertain postmodern information age. Linked to the U.S. Constitution, mass media, and business, the role propaganda plays must be understood in terms of an information-based economy. An extensive chronology of propaganda-related events, plus an A-Z guide defining hundreds of important terms (some ill-defined in context, such as backdoor contact and spin doctor), combine to meet an immediate need for an easy-to-use resource that not only credibly defines the field but stimulates new research. Americans have had a love-hate relationship with propaganda since before the nation itself existed. The thesis of this work is that propaganda is as American as apple pie. The right to persuade and communicate is enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The technologies and business aspects of mass media that shape culture around the world were perfected in America; hundreds of thousands of people find employment in various persuasion industries. Propaganda is becoming even more essential to maintaining social cohesion in a multiculturally diverse society. The three volumes in this series act as a finding tool that distinctively crossed over artificial barriers to open new approaches to understanding the phenomenon that defines our time. This work clarifies what propaganda is or is not as it knives through the confusion surrounding the imprecise terminology and lack of historical background to often associated with its study.

Double Redaction of the Deuteronomistic History

Double Redaction of the Deuteronomistic History
Martin Noth argued that in the books of Joshua-Kings could be seen the work of a single, purposeful author or historian-a hypothesis which, although close to becoming one of those rare ''assured results of critical scholarship'', has recently encountered criticism. Nelson observes that Noth''s historian has a ''disturbing tendency to fall apart in the hands of those who work with him''. In this comprehensive study of the question, he attempts to put on a solid critical foundation the increasingly popular theory that the Deutoronomistic History is a product of a two-stage literary process.

Wisconsin

release date: Jan 01, 2001
Wisconsin
A haven for summer tourists and winter sport enthusiasts, Wisconsin is famed for its physical beauty and its prodigious production of cheese and dairy products. Richard Nelson Current''s compact history reveals the colorful past of America''s Dairyland, from early explorers and gangsters to sports heroes and cheeseheads. Both the Ringling Brothers'' "World''s Greatest Shows" and Barnum & Bailey''s "Greatest Show on Earth" originated in Wisconsin, along with the typewriter, Johnson''s Wax, and the first automatic assembly line (for manufacturing automobile frames). Wisconsin inventors contributed to the mechanization of American farms by developing harvesters, reapers, cultivators, threshers, and other machinery. Sen. Robert M. ("Fighting Bob") La Follette brought progressive reform to the state; a few decades later another Wisconsin native, Joseph McCarthy, revealed his agenda as a U.S. senator. The Gideons, who place Bibles in hotel room nightstands, got their start in Wisconsin, and the state''s factories produced most of the 107 steam shovels that dug the Panama Canal. Even before American Motors in Kenosha became Wisconsin''s largest employer, Wisconsinites were responsible for such car-related developments as the first four-wheel-drive vehicle and an early tire-patching kit. To football fans, the capital of Wisconsin is Green Bay, where in 1919 Earl Louis Lambeau organized the Packers. Even during the team''s fifteen-year losing streak, Green Bay consisted, as one reporter observed, of "nearly 50,000 wild-eyed maniacs [who] know more about football than any other 50,000 people on the face of the earth." Fast-paced and entertaining, Current''s history chronicles how Wisconsin''s homegrown ideas, from the "Wisconsin Idea" of efficient state government to ski-tows and speedometers, made their way into the broader marketplace of American culture.

Greater Iran

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Greater Iran
"These memoirs of a founder of Middle Eastern studies at U.S. institutions reveal more than the events of a life spent in intimate contact with many peoples of Eurasia. Although mainly concerned with "Greater Iran" (Iran/Persia, Afghanistan and Tajikistan), Richard Nelson Frye, Aga Khan professor of Iranian emeritus at Harvard University, describes changes which he witnessed there and elsewhere, making observations that are timely to understanding present-day relationships in the region. One of the first Western scholars to visit Central Asia after the death of Joseph Stalin, his knowledge of many languages enabled Frye to report on conditions in that hitherto little known region. In the course of subsequent trips to the USSR, the friendships he formed gave him unique insights about Soviet intellectuals concerned with the greater Iranian world. Life in Afghanistan and Persia (Iran) before the great changes that have transformed the area since the 1970s form a major part of this book. A much traveled Orientalist of the "old school," Frye''s interaction with Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh, Sadruddin Aga Khan, Bobojon Gafurov, Fikri Seljuki, Roman Ghirshman, Henry Corbin, as well as Nathan Pusey of Harvard, and various shapers of US policy toward Iran and Iranian Studies, are especially noteworthy. Personal matters are not forgotten, since some readers will wish to know how a boy from a small Midwestern town became so enamored with Iran and Central Asia that he devoted his life to investigating and explaining their history and cultures. These memoirs are not only a record of the past, but also of recent visits to old haunts that have evoked comments about the future of the Middle East and Central Asia."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Behavior and Sensory Biology of Elasmobranch Fishes: an Anthology in Memory of Donald Richard Nelson

release date: Feb 28, 2001
The Behavior and Sensory Biology of Elasmobranch Fishes: an Anthology in Memory of Donald Richard Nelson
The elasmobranch fishes include the living sharks, skates and rays that are important members of nearly all marine ecosystems. Their large size, secretive behavior, and wide-ranging habits make them difficult to observe in the field or to maintain in captivity. Consequently, little is known about their natural behavior and how it is mediated by their sensory systems. This volume is dedicated to the scientific contributions and memory of Donald Nelson, a pioneer in the study of shark behavior, sensory biology, and remote instrumentation. The two opening papers review Don Nelson''s unique scientific accomplishments and provide insight into his strong bias towards study of animals in the field. These are followed by 14 scientific papers on elasmobranch behavior, sensory biology, and current monitoring technologies. The papers on elasmobranch sensory biology and behavior address questions on hearing, the lateral line, electroreception, the brain, orientation behavior, chemical irritants, feeding, and reproduction. The latter section of the volume presents papers on conventional tagging techniques, ultrasonic telemetry, physiological telemetry, remote monitoring techniques, archival tagging and satellite tagging. The intent of this volume is to familiarize both new and established scientists with the sensory biology and behavior of sharks and rays, and to encourage further behavioral research on these animals in their natural environment.

Lincoln's Loyalists

release date: Jan 01, 1992
Lincoln's Loyalists
With this path-breaking book, Richard Nelson Current closes a major gap in our understanding of the important role of white southerners who fought for the Union during the Civil War. The ranks of the Union forces swelled by more than 100,000 of these men known to their friends as "loyalists" and to their enemies as "tories". They substantially strengthened the Union, weakened the Confederacy, and affected the outcome of the Civil War. Despite the assertions of southern governors that Lincoln would get no troops from the South to preserve the Union, every Confederate state except South Carolina provided at least a battalion of white troops for the Union Army. The role of black soldiers (including those from the South) continues to receive deserved attention. Curiously, little heed has been paid to the white southern supporters of the Union cause, and nothing has been published about the group as a whole. Relying almost entirely on primary sources, Current here opens the long-overdue investigation of these many Americans who, at great risk to themselves and their families, made a significant contribution to the Union''s war effort. Current meticulously explores the history of the loyalists in each Confederate state during the war. Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia provided over 70 percent of the loyalist troops, but 10,000 from Arkansas, 7,000 from Louisiana, and thousands from North Carolina, Texas, and Alabama volunteered as well. The author weaves the separate state stories into an intriguing and detailed tapestry. The loyalists served in a variety of capacities--some performing mundane tasks, some fighting with valor. Whatever his individual role, each southerner joining the Unionconstituted a double loss to the Confederacy: a subtraction from its own ranks and an addition to the Union''s. Undoubtedly, this played an important role in the Confederate defeat.

Human Relationship Skills

release date: Sep 27, 2006
Human Relationship Skills
Human Relationship Skills: Coaching and Self-Coaching presents a practical ''how to'' guide to relationship skills, showing how readers can improve and, where necessary, repair relationships. This thoroughly revised and updated fourth edition reflects the increased interest in coaching, showing how it can be applied to everyday life. These skills are viewed as sequences of choices that people can make well or poorly; covering a range of skill areas the book assists readers to make affirming rather than destructive choices in their relationships. It begins by addressing the questions of "what are relationship skills?" and "what are coaching skills?", and follows with a series of chapters which thoroughly detail and illuminate various relationship skills including: - listening and showing understanding - managing shyness - intimacy and companionship - assertiveness and managing anger - managing relationship problems and ending relationships The book concludes with a chapter on how users can maintain and improve their skills by coaching themselves. Accessibly written and using activities, the book will be appropriate for those involved in ''life coaching'' as well as general counselling and therapy.
