Fall Classics

release date: Dec 18, 2007
Fall Classics
Long before there was the Super Bowl, the NBA Championship, the Final Four, or the World Cup, there was the World Series. In the beginning, men in derbies sat in the outfield and marveled at Mathewson and McGraw. Today, fans congregate in sports bars, staring at screens big enough to see which players have shaved that day. For a century, the World Series has captured the nation’s imagination. The drama has included Willie Mays’s catch, of course, and Reggie Jackson’s home runs, and the gratifying day when Walter Johnson finally won. But the plot lines have also featured the audacious fixing of the 1919 Series and the unlikely heroics of various journeymen never much heard of before the span of a few brilliant autumn days, and never much heard of since. There has been one perfect game. There have been any number of perfectly inexplicable managerial decisions, not all of them made by managers of the Red Sox. There has been drama, comedy, and pathos. Fall Classics is a collection of the best writing about the World Series in its first hundred years. Certainly it is a kind of history of the event. It is also a catalog of the work of some of the most accomplished and entertaining writers of the past century, since the World Series has drawn to itself not only our best sports scribblers, but many writers who wouldn’t have dreamed of writing about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Final Four, or even the Super Bowl. Here you’ll find Jimmy Breslin telling Damon Runyon’s fantastic story of how he got the scoop on where Grover Cleveland Alexander spent the first innings of a seventh game he eventually won. (Hint: It wasn’t the bullpen.) Satchel Paige recalls his experience of finally getting to pitch in the Series in 1948. Red Smith writes about Willie Mays’s last hurrah with the Mets in 1973 against the A’s. And Peter Gammons and Roger Angell give their takes on the two most famous game sixes of all, Gammons on 1975 and Angell on 1986. The games and the memories go on. For every fan whose heart yearns for a bleacher seat, a ballpark frank, and a slice of October Americana, Fall Classics is a treasure.

An Address to the Inhabitants of the Colonies, Established
In ''An Address to the Inhabitants of the Colonies, Established,'' Richard Johnson presents a compelling examination of colonial society, underscoring the social, political, and economic conditions faced by inhabitants during a pivotal era of transformation. The text exemplifies an eloquent prose style that combines persuasive rhetoric with moral reflection, urging colonial residents to engage in thoughtful self-governance and cooperative action. Rich in historical context, Johnson''s treatise responds to the anxieties of a society grappling with British imperial authority and the burgeoning desire for autonomy, making it a vital document for understanding the philosophical underpinning of early American revolutionary sentiments. Richard Johnson, an influential figure in the early colonial period, was deeply rooted in the political landscape and social dilemmas facing the colonies. His background as an engaged citizen and his involvement in the emerging dialogue on governance provided him with unique insights into the aspirations and grievances of colonial inhabitants. This work reflects his advocacy for unity among colonists, illuminating the complexities of identity and allegiance in a time of upheaval and change. For readers interested in the intersections of literature, political philosophy, and colonial history, Johnson''s ''An Address to the Inhabitants of the Colonies, Established'' serves as an essential text. It not only provides a window into the minds of early American thinkers but also encourages contemporary readers to ponder the intricate fabric of social responsibility and civic engagement.

Post Hurricane Black Turpentine Beetle Damage

release date: Dec 12, 2007
Post Hurricane Black Turpentine Beetle Damage
The Louisiana timber industry relies on the availability of harvestable trees. In areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the black turpentine beetle (Dendroctonus terebrans) contributed to the mortality of loblolly (Pinus taeda) and slash (Pinus elliottii) pine trees. This timber loss due to natural causes reduces the landowner s earnings The BTB girdles the cambium layer of pines that are weakened by wind or drought. This study estimated post-Rita beetle damage on a 458-acre slash pine tract consisting of 157 trees per acre on the West Bay Wildlife Management Area, Louisiana. Timber loss was estimated by identifying, mapping, and calculating the board footage of infested trees on 40 randomly selected plots within the sampling area. There were 785 infested trees that averaged 28.3 board feet per tree. The loss totaled to 22,216 board feet with a value of $7,775. The estimated timber loss was compared to historical tree losses due to beetle infestations. Further research should be implemented to gather additional information on timber losses that resulted from the consequential infestation of the black turpentine beetle in hurricane affected timber stands. Key Words: Black turpentine beetle, Hurricane winds, Slash Pine Timber, West Bay Wildlife Management Area, Trimble

Nature Wants Us to Be Fat

Nature Wants Us to Be Fat
2022 NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS FINALIST — HEALTH: GENERAL “It is exceptionally well organized and presented, making it an ideal and highly recommended addition to personal, community, college, and university library Health/Medicine collections.” —Midwest Book Review Nature puts a “survival switch” in our bodies to protect us from starvation. Stuck in the “on” position, it’s the hidden source of weight gain, heart disease, and many other common health struggles. But you can turn it off. Dr. Richard Johnson has been on the cutting edge of research into the cause of obesity for more than a decade. His team’s discovery of the fructose-powered survival switch—a metabolic pathway that animals in nature turn on and off as needed, but that our modern diet has permanently fixed in the “on” position, where it becomes a fat switch—revolutionized the way we think about why we gain weight. In Nature Wants Us to Be Fat, he details the mounting evidence on how this switch is responsible both for excess fat storage and for many of the major diseases endemic to the Western world, including heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Dr. Johnson also reveals the surprising link between the survival switch and health conditions such as gout, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke—and even behavioral issues like addiction and ADHD. And, most important, he shares a science-based plan to help readers fight back against nature. Guided by ongoing clinical research—plus fascinating observations from the animal kingdom, evolution, and history—Dr. Johnson takes you along on an eye-opening investigation into: What you can do to turn off your survival switch What we have in common with hibernating bears, sperm whales, and the world’s fattest bird Why it’s fructose (not glucose) that drives insulin resistance and metabolic disease The foods we eat that trigger the body to make its own fructose The surprising role salt and dehydration play in fat accumulation The surprising link between the survival switch and health conditions such as gout and liver and kidney diseases, and even behavioral issues like addiction and ADHD Dr. Johnson not only provides new recommendations for how we can prevent or treat obesity, but also how we can use this information to reduce our risk of developing disease. Nature wants us to be fat, and when we understand why, we gain the tools we need to lose weight and optimize our health.
