Zwei Dinge vorweg; Einen tatsächlichen Gottesbeweis zu führen, an dem keine berechtigten Zweifel mehr angebracht wären, ist bislang niemandem gelungen. Das Umgekehrte freilich gilt gleichermaßen! Auch ein Beweis für die Nichtexistenz Gottes konnte bisher nicht erbracht werden. Und es steht auch nicht zu erwarten, dass sich daran in absehbarer Zeit etwas ändern könnte. Auch wenn er selbst felsenfest vom Gegenteil überzeugt sein mag, und wenn noch so viele ihm folgen mögen; Auch Richard Dawkins ist dies mit Der Gotteswahn nicht gelungen. Das freilich ist auch kein Wunder, weil eine endgültige Antwort auf diese, die gesamte Menschheitsgeschichte durchziehende Streitfrage nun einmal schlechterdings unmöglich ist. Soweit, so gut. Aber bedeutet dies, dass man sich die Lektüre dieses mit großem Furor verfassten Werkes sparen sollte? Mitnichten! Denn vieles von dem, was der Evolutionsbiologe Dawkins gegen die Religionen vorbringt -- denn nur gegen diese und nicht etwa gegen den nach seiner festen Überzeugung gar nicht existierenden Gott kann seine Kampfschrift ja gerichtet sein -- lohnt es, dass man sich damit ebenso unvoreingenommen wie kritisch auseinandersetzt. Auch wenn man die Schlussfolgerungen des Autors nicht teilen mag, so bietet Der Gotteswahn doch einen, wenn auch sehr subjektiven Überblick der Genese der „Gotteshypothese, der gängigen Argumente für und wider die Existenz Gottes sowie der Wurzeln von Moral und Religion. Auch Dawkins Entwicklung seiner Hypothese, dass Religiosität nichts weiter als der Ausdruck einer -- was freilich zu denken geben sollte, mehr als massenhaft vorkommenden und ergo wohl anthropologisch einigermaßen konstanten -- psychischen Dysfunktion sei, lohnt nachvollzogen zu werden (und sei es auch nur, um sie für sich zu widerlegen). Über die Existenz oder Nichtexistenz Gottes freilich ist damit immer noch nichts Abschließendes gesagt. Aber das war ja auch nicht zu erwarten.

Adaptations are often spoken of as ''for the good of'' some entity, but what is that entity? Groups and species are now rightly unfashionable, so what are we left with? The prevailing answer is Darwin''s: ''the individual''. Individuals clearly do not maximise their own survival so the concept of fitness had to be invented. If fitness is correctly defined in Hamilton''s way as ''inclusive fitness'' it ceases to matter whether we speak of individuals maximising their inclusive fitness or of genes maximising their survival. The two formulations are mutually inter-translatable. Yet some serious mistranslations are quoted from the literature, which have led their authors into actual biological error. The present paper blames the prevailing concentration on the individual for these errors, and advocates a reversion to the replicator as the proper focus of evolutionary attention. A gene is an obvious replicator, but there are others, and the general properties of replicators are discussed. Defenders of the individual as the unit of selection often point to the unity and integration of the genome as expressed phenotypically. This paper ends by attacking even this assumption, not by a reductionist fragmentation of the phenotype, but, on the contrary, by extending it to include more than one individual. Replicators survive by virtue of their effects on the world, and these effects are not restricted to one individual body but constitute a wider ''extended phenotype''.
