Modeling Purple Sea Urchin and California Sheephead Populations in Southern California Kelp Forests

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Modeling Purple Sea Urchin and California Sheephead Populations in Southern California Kelp Forests
In this project I am modelling the predator-prey relationship between California sheephead and purple sea urchin populations, respectively, in kelp forests off the coast of southern California. The Lotka-Volterra equations explain predator-prey relationships in their most basic form. These equations incorporate a set of biological assumptions that can be unrepresentative of many ecological systems. I will consider alternate models that incorporate variations of the Lotka-Volterra model which may better represent the biology of the purple sea urchins and California sheephead. Using biological characteristics of both species in kelp forests, I will set possible and likely parameters and solve for unknown parameters. After constructing the models, I will fit each model to the population data. Once I have fit each model to the data, I will compute various error estimations using four possible objective functions and determine the model of best fit.

Exploring Parents' Perceptions of Externalizing and Internalizing Behaviors and Their Choice of Therapy

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Exploring Parents' Perceptions of Externalizing and Internalizing Behaviors and Their Choice of Therapy
Mental health problems in children, such as the prevalence of externalizing and internalizing behaviors are a growing crisis in the United States. The economic shift in recent years has resulted in many parents working increased hours and spending less time as a family, which often results in increased problematic behaviors. In response to the relationship discord and behavior problems in children, filial play therapy is recommended as an effective treatment option. Although filial play therapy is a supported treatment, societal views on play are examined, revealing that many parents disregard the importance of play for a preferred focus on academic achievement. This article reflects parent''s concern of externalizing and internalizing behaviors in boys and girls based on a provided behavioral vignette. Parents'' recommended therapeutic treatment based on level of concern is also explored. Suggestions are provided as to how systemic change might be implemented within these families through parent and child participation in filial play therapy, specifically when parents report reluctance towards participation in play therapy.

Every Woman Has the Right to Look Beautiful

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Every Woman Has the Right to Look Beautiful
"Every Woman Has the Right to Look Beautiful": Beauty Products & Body Politics in the Mid-Twentieth Century" is a template for a museum exhibit in the form of an accompanying brochure. The aim of the exhibit, with the use of the brochure, is to explore beauty culture of the United States from the 1920s to the 1950s. It examines cosmetic products, entrepreneurs, beauty icons, and the advertisements, which were influenced by and actively influenced both white and black female consumers. Racial politics and gender norms affected the ways that women have perceived and defined beauty. The transmission of beauty culture through media and culture has dictated how ideal womanhood and beauty should look. Even while resisting the mainstream definition of beauty, women of color have also influenced and been influenced by the ever-present beauty culture. The brochure encourages viewers to consider beauty culture and products, something that is seemingly ordinary or mundane, as a widespread influencer of American culture.

Cultivating Empires: Environment, Expertise, and Scientific Agriculture in Late Ottoman and French Mandate Syria

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Cultivating Empires: Environment, Expertise, and Scientific Agriculture in Late Ottoman and French Mandate Syria
The transition from the Ottoman Empire to post-World War I mandate states in the Middle East coincided with the emergence of agricultural technologies and the development of new strategies of rule and conceptions of expertise considered integral to their practice. Given agriculture''s centrality to the economy of the region which would become the nation states of Syria and Lebanon, implementing these technologies was a stated priority for both the Ottoman and mandate governments. Using these historical developments as a lens, this dissertation examines contrasting strategies of imperial rule as exemplified through policies related to processes of agrarian change. By tracing circulations of expertise regarding these technologies and practices through actors involved in global, imperial, and local networks, it also investigates the intellectual and practical continuities and divergences in French, Ottoman, and Syrian technocratic approaches to environmental management, the impacts of these imperial policies on local rural communities, and these communities'' responses.

Born Yesterday

release date: Oct 31, 2014
Born Yesterday
Though born in 1965, Rachel''s story could easily have been set in the 1800s. Wearing long dresses and broad-brimmed bonnets and living without modern conveniences including electricity, telephone, radio, television, or indoor plumbing, she and her two older brothers were shaped by the extreme religious views of her iron-willed, Vietnam-veteran father and malleable, practical-minded mother. The family separated from society and lived under often harsh conditions in an old, abandoned house atop a remote range of hills in Tennessee, awaiting the end of the world. Then at 16, Rachel was forced to face the world in which she was not raised to live. She struggled to adjust to an unsheltered life without casting aside the good along with the bad. Eventually she found her way to a full, balanced, and vibrant life. Rachel shares an amazing story that ultimately testifies of God''s faithful and restorative loving care. --back cover.
