Hot Flash Gal

release date: Sep 01, 2004
Hot Flash Gal
Kelly Povo, photographer and artist, creator of Kelly Cards and other inspiring products for women has once again teamed up with Phyllis Root, an award-winning writer with a pointed and gentle sense of humor, to create Hot Flash Gal! The women of a certain age in Kelly''s hand-colored set-up shots are riding Harleys, shoveling snow in their swimsuits, and having a blast together as they negotiate the pitfalls, pratfalls, and benefits of menopause. It''s increasingly apparent to millions of women that "that time of life" is their time of life to shine. Any woman who''s a bit slow on the uptake? i.e. she hasn''t figured out the benefits of menopause-is sure to be won over by this lighthearted look. Do you need more than a little help from your friends? Is your girlish figure harder to find? Have your heating bills plummeted? Congratulations! You''re a genuine HOT FLASH GAL!? Hot Flash Gal may not leap buildings with a single bound, but she does appreciate the everyday stuff--family, friends, and doing what you want.

Gladys on the Go

release date: Sep 01, 2004
Gladys on the Go
Who hasn''t found herself lost somewhere in mid-life, asking those questions: What''s it all about? Is this all there is? Enter Gladys, stage left, with her questions and her answers. This laugh until you cry book is smart as a whip and sharp as a tack. By the end, Gladys has found her way. Gladys takes us all the way from Sheboygan to Duluth, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Reno and back home again. And in so doing, she''ll point the way for millions of women of a certain age, who are looking for their je ne sais quoi. Kelly Povo, photographer and artist, creator of Kelly Girls Cards and other inspiring products for women, and Phyllis Root, an award-winning writer with a pointed and gentle sense of humor, have teamed up to create Gladys- the middle-aged gal who has had it with life. None of her accomplishments and pursuits satisfy her anymore, even though her breasts (turkey, that is) were the talk of Sheboygan. She''s sure there''s more to life. So off she goes on a classic (well sort of) shero journey to find herself. In L.A. she finds women on the cutting edge- of lawns. And so it goes, until Thelma, the Angel of Lost Women appears, and, like Dorothy, Gladys figures out where her heart''s desire lies and discovers that life is a party to which she is invited.

If You Want to See a Caribou

If You Want to See a Caribou
If you really want to see a woodland caribou, you might try going to a place forgotten by time. It should be a hushed place, with perhaps rocky green hills and blue water, home to loons and beaver, lichen and yellow buttercups. With every step, this gentle journey brings us to a deeper and more unique connection with nature. Phyllis Root’s mesmerizing text, together with Jim Meyer’s outstanding woodblock prints, makes the very heart of the forest come alive and reveals that if you are patient and quiet, sometimes what you are seeking will, in the end, find you.

Foggy Friday

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Foggy Friday
The twentieth century is as remarkable for its world wars as it is for its efforts to outlaw war in international and constitutional law and politics. Japan in the World examines some of these efforts through the life and work of Shidehara Kijuro, who was active as diplomat and statesman between 1896 until his death in 1951. Shidehara is seen as a guiding thread running through the first five decades of the twentieth century. Through the 1920s until the beginning of the 1930s, his foreign policy shaped Japan''s place within the community of nations. The positive role Japan played in international relations and the high esteem in which it was held at that time goes largely to his credit. As Prime Minister and "man of the hour" after the Second World War, he had a hand in shaping the new beginning for post-war Japan, instituting policies that would start his country on a path to peace and prosperity. Accessing previously unpublished archival materials, Schlichtmann examines the work of this pacifist statesman, situating Shidehara within the context of twentieth century statecraft and international politics. While it was an age of devastating total wars that took a vast toll of civilian lives, the politics and diplomatic history between 1899 and 1949 also saw the light of new developments in international and constitutional law to curtail state sovereignty and reach a peaceful order of international affairs. Japan in the World is an essential resource for understanding that nation''s contributions to these world-changing developments.
