Travels with Our Kitchen

release date: Sep 23, 2015
Travels with Our Kitchen
Our inspiration for "Travels With Our Kitchen" was an article Sheila wrote in Sarawak, called "Ex-pat in the Kitchen" for a Shell company publication "Life On The Move". The initial idea was to include recipes Sheila, and sometimes I, had cooked, and eaten, in the different countries we had lived in. Sheila, who had always been an avid cook book reader and food enthusiast, had kept a record of many of the recipes we had prepared through the years of our travels. As on many occasions in a new location or country we were faced with produce completely new to us, oft times combined with a shortage in supply of familiar fare, taking an inventive approach to food choice and preparation was an essential. In this we were helped by many fine cooks who had refined their skills in exactly these circumstances. Once started the objective of the story slowly evolved. Beside what we cooked and what we ate in the 13 different locations we lived in it became clear we needed to include some detail of why we were living where we were at any particular time, and what other things we did. As such this is a record of the life we have lived told through the 120 recipes included. The style and sophistication of the recipes follow our trajectory from "student" fare, cheap and simple; expanded choices in London and Holland; far Eastern influences from firstly Brunei and then Sarawak; Mediterranean flavours from Cyprus and Syria; a taste of the Arabic world thanks to Oman and the luxury of a regular fresh fish supply; to finally culminating with an ongoing delight in Thai food ably guided by two Thai daughter-in-law''s, and the joys of the excellent Scottish ingredients readily available in our retirement in Edinburgh.

My Black and White Photo Journey

release date: Feb 15, 2017
My Black and White Photo Journey
In the summer of 2015 Sheila, my wife, and I visited a David Baily photo exhibition in the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. His portraits, especially the early black and white photos, rekindled a desire to get back to an earlier approach, and spirit, of photography. I would return to black and white, 35mm film, photography. Another inspiration was discussions with friends reflecting upon the fact that it is the portraits from our historic photo collections that still have meaning and relevance. Finally it was a reaction to the extent by which it is now possible, using PC software, to digitally re-create images that bear little or even no relation to the original picture. With film the image you get is what you see and what you take. This text traces the learning path I followed as I rediscovered, and in many instances learnt anew, what camera equipment I preferred; what film and exposure methods I needed; what tips would really enhance my images; and perhaps most important of all when a resultant image was poor what had I done wrong.
