Digital technologies allow people with disabilities to participate independently in society in ways they never could before. The full realization of these new opportunities remains elusive, though, because working professionals in the information and communication technology (ICT) field rarely receive adequate training in how to make digital ICT accessible to people with disabilities. Adding accessibility to the university ICT curriculum can help create a critical mass of ICT professionals with accessibility awareness and expertise to finally realize the full accessibility potential of digital technologies. This dissertation provides a rich informational context from which ICT curriculum leaders can decide how to best infuse accessibility into their own curriculum.Part I describes programs at three universities, documenting how and why the curriculum leaders created and implemented the curriculum. The three programs are: (a) the Web Sciences master''s degree program at the University of Linz in Austria, (b) the Instructional Technology master''s degree program at George Mason University in the United States, and (c) the Digital Inclusion master''s degree program at Middlesex University in the United Kingdom.Part II analyzes six main themes across the three programs: (a) the curriculum goals and rationale; (b) the curriculum design process, from idea to implementation; (c) defining the scope of the curriculum; (d) instructional materials and strategies; (e) instructional format and media choices; and (f) program sustainability (which proved to be one of the most important themes).Part III discusses accessibility and technology within the theoretical perspective of the Capability Approach, which is an approach to economic development that takes into account many variables in the quality of human life, not just financial measures. Digital technology plays a special role in increasing the quality of life of people with disabilities. The last section provides a list of ways to determine whether a curriculum adequately addresses accessibility issues or not.

We studied the light-induced reactions of the (6-4) photolyase, a flavoenzyme of the cryptochrome/photolyase family that repairs the UV-induced (6-4) photodamage in DNA with the aid of blue light. We studied this photorepair reaction as well as the light-induced cofactor reduction called photoactivation that the enzyme uses to bring itself to a repair-active state in the (6-4) photolyase from Xenopus laevis. We have studied the photoactivation of the FADox cofactor of the enzyme using femtosecond polarised transient absorption spectroscopy. We observed a sub-picosecond electron transfer (~400 fs) after excitation of the FADox cofactor. We were able to characterise a tryptophan residue as the electron donor. We sought to differentiate the spectroscopically identical but differently oriented tryptophan residues within the protein''s photoactivation site by transient anisotropy measurements. Our results suggest that the photoactivation mechanism is not fully compatible with the mechanism thought to be conserved among photolyases: an electron transfer mechanism via electron hopping along a chain of three highly conserved tryptophan residues.Using series of single turnover flashes, we have found that the repair reaction proceeds by a successive two-photon mechanism. The first photon converts the (6-4) lesion into a metastable intermediate X, the lifetime of which is ~2 min. Absorption of a second photon within the lifetime of X results to the restoration of intact nucleobases. In light of our findings, the reaction was also studied by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy.

In experiments reported here, visual and vestibular stimuli were manipulated independently. Observers made judgments about body orientation or self-motion. Results show that visual and vestibular senses are highly complimentary, in that they provide very similar types of information. Results also show that self-motion stimuli influence body orientation perception, and body orientation stimuli influence self-motion perception.

Characterization of the Graphite/epoxy Interface with Various Surface Treatments Under Cyclic Loading
The effects of graphite surface modification on fatigue crack growth resistance of the graphite/epoxy interface were examined using flexural peel specimens. Edge surfaces of pryolitic graphite were treated in an oxygen plasma for various lengths of time and subsequently bonded to a toughened epoxy to form flexural peel specimens. Fatigue crack growth rates were measured for the plasma treated and untreated specimens as a function of strain energy release rate. Fatigue crack growth resistance of plasma treated specimens was notably higher than that of untreated specimens, with the fatigue threshold doubled at an optimal treatment time. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and surface profilometry studies indicated that both surface chemistry and surface morphology of the graphite were changed by the plasma treatment. High temperature annealing was used to restore the original surface chemistry while retaining the etched surface morphology. Fatigue experiments were then performed on the heat treated specimens to separate the chemical and morphological effects on resistance to crack growth. Chemical modification turned out to be a secondary effect, contributing less than 13% to the overall fatigue crack growth resistance. A micro-mechanical model is proposed which explains the relative effects of surface chemistry and morphology on fatigue crack growth resistance along the graphite/epoxy interface.
