Some 350 years ago English society was torn apart by the violent dispute that erupted between King and Parliament. The English Civil War divided communities and even families against themselves and is remembered as one of the bloodiest periods of British history. Ever since, the war has been the subject of heated debate and analysis. One approach to the conflict that has become increasingly popular is the re-enactments that regularly take place across the country. Not only do these displays bring vividly to life the events of the time, but also, through their detailed attention to accuracy, they offer a glimpse of the realities of ife for combatants, their families and the innocent civilians caught up in the war and confusion of England in the mid-17th century.

This dissertation describes first-principles quantum mechanical investigations of several realistic solid-state systems. The main goal of this research has been to understand and predict the electronic, vibrational, and structural properties of materials under pressure. Microscopic information on these properties is obtained within local density functional theory using ab initio pseudopotentials. This work focuses on three categories of materials: (1) Part I deals with the high-pressure behavior of elemental systems from group IV of the Periodic Table. The pressure-dependences of Raman-active phonon modes of high-pressure, metallic phases of silicon, germanium, and tin are studied within the frozen-phonon approximation. In addition, the structural properties of a recently discovered orthorhombic phase of silicon are calculated. The aim of these two investigations is to understand and explain recent experimental results. A third investigation predicts the existence of an orthorhombic, high-pressure phase of germanium. (2) Part II focuses on group V of the Periodic Table. The electronic and vibrational properties of elemental arsenic are studied with the aim of understanding the measured pressure-dependences of the superconducting transition temperature and the normal-state resistance. In addition, several candidate atomic phases of solid nitrogen are studied to determine their structural-stability and electronic properties. (3) Finally, Part III considers the effect of varying the stoichiometry in compound systems. In particular, model calculations are performed to explore the Ga-As system with the goal of motivating experimental studies. The electronic properties of several model Ga-As systems with varying stoichiometry are studied.

This innovative new text is derived from a highly successful Open University course of the same title. It takes as a dominant theme the contested issue of ''globalization'' (the apparent intensification of global patterns of inter-dependence) and its implications for the autonomy of the modern nation-state. Following a conceptual introduction, which critically examines the theoretical debates framing the study of world politics, the work is structured around four key processes of globalization which the authors identify as being the central determinants of contemporary global politics. These key processes are: the global impact of great power relations; the globalizing tendencies of technological innovation; the existence of a global economy; and the globalizing force of modernity. Reflecting this structure the text is organized into four discrete sections. Each section explores, both theoretically and empirically, one of the four processes of globalization. Throughout, particular attention is paid both to a critical evaluation of these globalizing processes as well as to their consequences for the sovereignty and autonomy of the modern nation-state. Moreover, the authors combine a lucid treatment of theoretical debates with topical case-study material to produce a text which is extremely accessible to undergraduate students studying international relations and politics and to those readers with little prior knowledge of world affairs.

Lewis draws on both humor theories and research, arguing for the development of interdisciplinary methodologies in the study of literary humor. He demonstrates that the sociologist of humor and the comic playwright approach the same subject—humor in and between groups—with different tools, that writers of Bildungsromane and developmental psychologists share a common interest in the role of humor in maturation, and that the monsters that haunt the psyches of professional comedians can be useful in understanding the odd minglings of humor and fear in Gothic fiction. His treatment of writers who differ widely in their use of humor suggests that the complexity and diversity of humor make it a richly variable determinant of character, genre, and writer.
