The Ordination of Women

The Ordination of Women
"This new essay might well be read before tackling the biblical passages, for here the air is cleared over traditional habits of thought which may obscure the witness of Scripture itself.. . .its gentle and straightforward style can do much to move the discussion along." -- Theology Today In this book, Jewett argues that on the basis of the Christian ideal of the partnership of the sees, women ought to share fully with men the privileges and responsibilities of church ministry. Paul K. Jewett (1919-1991) was professor of systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He also wrote Man as Male and Female and God, Creation, and Revelation.

Infant Baptism and the Covenant of Grace

Infant Baptism and the Covenant of Grace
This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. Paul Jewett, author of the creative and highly provocative book Man As Male and Female, here turns his critical attention to the practice of infant baptism. Jewett does not accept the traditional "covenant" argument for baptizing infants, and this book explains why he believes this argument fails. Infant baptism is not a subject which can be isolated. For, as Jewett would have his readers understand, one''s view on this issue is integrally related to one''s view of the sacraments in general and thereby to the whole doctrine of the church and salvation. Thus it is understandable that what appears to be a minor theological question has had such divisive effects on the church. A discussion of the historical source of infant baptism begins Jewett''s critique and introduces such issues as the distinction between infants and children, the silence of certain early church fathers on the subject, infant communion, and catechetical instruction. The second and major portion of this book examines the theological issue, focusing specifically on the covenant argument, which suggests that baptism replaces circumcision as the sign of the covenant and thereby is given to infants. This argument, Jewett claims, fails to take into account the historical character of revelation, and contains certain contradictions. Jewett concludes with a creative defense of believer baptism, one which is theologically responsible and which recognizes the profound truths of covenant theology.

Man as Male and Female

Man as Male and Female
This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. Not without justification, Christian theologians (most of whom have been men) have been described as male chauvinists. But to the extent that such an accusation is fair, Paul Jewett would argue, these theologians are not living up to the genius of Christian theology. That is the burden of this provocative new book. In Man as Male and Female Professor Jewett sets forth and elaborates a full-orbed theology of human sexuality. The key to it is embedded in the Genesis account of creation. Not only are we told that Man is created in God''s image but also "male and female created he them." The differentiation between the sexes, Jewett argues, captures something of the trinitarian character of the Creator, particularly the dimension of fellowship. What that means is that the relationship of man to woman is one of partnership, not hierarchy. Man and woman are properly related when they accept each other as equals whose differences complement each other in all areas of life. Quite a different view took hold as the religion of the Old Testament developed. Man was seen as superior, women inferior; man made the rules, woman obeyed them. Jesus made no radical verbal challenge to that system. But his way of life and his treatment of women, Professor Jewett argues, bespoke a profound new theory, later given definite expression by the Apostle Paul: "In Christ there is . . . no male and female." In response to those who would quote Paul to support the other side, Professor Jewett contends that Paul''s practice simply did not always match his profound and revolutionary insight. Interspersed among the steps of Professor Jewett''s careful theological study are fascinating notes concerning questions like sex in the final eschaton, the marital status of Jesus, the hatred of women in Western thought, and the ordination of women.

The Self-concept and Self-actualization of University Faculty in Relation to Student Perceptions of Effective Teaching

The Self-concept and Self-actualization of University Faculty in Relation to Student Perceptions of Effective Teaching
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between student ratings of university instructors and instructors'' self-concept and self-actualization. During the academic year 1970-71, students rated faculty members teaching undergraduate courses from the Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire , Instructors rated high or in the top three deciles were defined in this study as good or effective teachers, and those rated low or in the lower three deciles were defined as poor or ineffective instructors. Sixty-eight percent or 118 of the instructors in these categories submitted to two psychological tests--the Index of Adjustment and Values and the Personal Orientation Inventory . These instruments were used to investigate the self-concept and self-actualization of university instructors. From the IAV two main areas were considered or investigated--the self- acceptance and discrepancy between the real and ideal self. Analysis of variance scores showed that there was no difference between mean scores of good and poor instructors in relation to how they accepted themselves and how they viewed their real self in relation to their ideal self. Both groups showed congruency and a positive view of self. When good and poor instructors were compared by an analysis of vari4́7¡ ̄ence as to their self-actualization, again, there was generally no difference between the means. However, on three subscales (of twelve) the groups differed significantly (.02-.05). Good instructors scored higher in Self4́7¡ ̄ Actualizing Value, Spontaneity, and Self Regard, or it might be said they are more self-willed, self-expressive, self-assertive, open, honest, and cognizant of their strengths and capabilities. Generally, poor instructors are just as self-actualizing (releasing of full capabilities and potentialities) as good instructors. Other data which showed significant distinction between good and poor instructors was the descriptive data. This data showed that college affiliation an d numb...

Emil Brunner

Emil Brunner
This booklet offers an initial acquaintance with the life and thought of Emil Brunner - the eminent Swiss theologian who had been highly influential in the movement commonly called neo-orthodoxy. Brunner has perhaps most profoundly influenced the theological dialog e of this century through his effort to restore to theology its proper task: believing thought about the revelation of God in Christ. The author sets forth positively Brunner''s contribution to our understanding of the Christian faith. At the same time, he lays bare weaknesses inherent in the position of this important theologian. -- Publisher (back cover)

Financing the College Education of Faculty Children

Financing the College Education of Faculty Children
This report deals with the problem college faculty members have in financing the undergraduate college education of their children. It attempts to determine the desirability of, and to recommend appropriate methods for, aid to college teachers for this purpose. The recommendations take into account the financial problem of educating faculty children, while acknowledging the importance of further study, in light of the wide extension of "fringe benefits" in all areas of American society. Faculty parents can make use of the information in this report in their own planning for their children''s college education.
