Punitive and rehabilitative ideologies have traditionally competed to influence correctional policy. The growing emphasis on prisoner rights however, has subtly transformed the mindset of the carceral institution. Juvenile detention officers, the frontline negotiators of these changes in the juvenile justice system, have been the focus of little ethnographical research concerning their ideological orientation or the pressures that shape that outlook. While sociological and criminal justice studies have quantitatively identified a number of individual and organizational factors that affect officers'' attitudes, these studies give scant attention to the actual impact of those views on rehabilitative efforts. This paper extends the carceral literature by giving qualitative focus to a particular detention center''s culture. The ethnographic approach shows how the interaction between prisoner rights and the need to function has patterned a focus on safety and security that, driven by the locomotion of protecting legal vulnerability while dealing with structural overwork, pushes officers away from punitive or rehabilitative attitudes toward a custodial mode of action.

A novel approach to the heating and actuation of shape memory polymer using dispersed Curie temperature thermo-regulated particles is proposed. Such a material has potential applications in medical devices which are delivered via catheters. A variety of tests were performed to determine the feasibility of this new approach to shape memory polymer actuation. Calorimetry tests were performed to quantify heat generation of various Nickel Zinc Ferrite particles. Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA), tensile strain recovery tests, and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to measure the mechanical effects of various particle volume contents and sizes on shape memory polymer. These tests suggest that the proposed method of actuation is very feasible, rapid heating can be achieved and the addition of particles up to 10% volume content has a minimal effect on the mechanical properties of the shape memory polymer.

To adequate evaluate the effectiveness of interventions into civil conflicts we need to account for the complex combination of conditions and strategies that can utilized by the intervener. I argue that an effective strategy should incorporate the initial conditions that lead to the conflict, as well as the type of actions taken by the intervener. That is, an intervener can attempt to influence the course of a conflict through discrete forms of interventions, or can use the options available in combinations. Using a duration model I demonstrate the combinations of military or economic interventions with diplomacy significantly reduce the duration of a conflict considerably beyond what any individual strategy might do. Further, particular strategies for intervening have different outcomes depending on whether they are initiated into ethno-religious or ideological conflicts. The results have theoretical implications involving the role of third party influence in domestic conflict, and policy implications in terms of how to best effectively articulate a method of conflict management in civil conflicts.
