Ben grew up in a household where his father was a Bishop of the United Brethren Church and operated their home as a stop on the Underground. Later Ben worked in Chicago for Root and Cady, a leading Civil War era music publisher. In his short life, Ben published over 80 songs including the Christmas favorite "Up on the Housetop."
