What do we mean by small town? How has this innocuous term – one up from ‘village’, a couple down from ‘city’ – come to function as a pejorative? Pressed to describe what the phrase ‘small town’ conjures up, we’d be hard pushed to say anything positive: closed-minded; petty; provincial; parochial. On a broad European canvas, however, the rich traditions of short story writing challenge these preconceptions. The stories collected here are neither narrow-minded nor petty, nor do the minds of their protagonists contract to fit their environment. In Germany, a house-husband is slowly sent over the edge by his over-achieving neighbours. In the town of Odda in Norway, a middle-aged Morrissey fan has a matter of hours to find a girlfriend so his ailing mother can die in peace. It’s the small gestures – a white lie, the turning of a blind eye, a small kindness or a secret kept – that allow the characters of these communities to survive, to breathe easily within the seemingly tight strictures life there can impose. It’s how we do things round here...

Zo is er Anoeschka, een jonge Moskoviete, die gebukt gaat onder de zorg voor haar gehandicapte zoontje. Ze vlucht en kiest daarmee voor een dakloos bestaan in de Moskouse metro. Daarnaast is er het verhaal van meneer Kunicki en de geheimzinnige verdwijning van zijn vrouw en zoontje op een Kroatisch eiland. De onderbrekingen in dit verhaal houden de lezer, die wacht op de ontknoping van dit mysterie, in grote spanning.

Tokarczuk''s third novel, Primeval and Other Times was awarded the Passport Prize in 1996 And The Koscielski Prize in 1997, which established the author as one of the leading voices in Polish letters. it is set in the mythical village of Primeval in the very heart of Poland, which is populated by eccentric, archetypal characters. The village, a microcosm of Europe, Is guarded by four archangels, from whose perspective the novel chronicles the lives of Primeval''s inhabitants over the course of the feral 20th century. In prose that is forceful and direct, The narrative follows Poland''s tortured political history from 1914 To The contemporary era And The episodic brutality that is visited on ordinary village life. Yet Primeval and Other Times is a novel of universal dimension that does not dwell on the parochial. A stylized fable as well as epic allegory about the inexorable grind of time, The clash between modernity (the masculine) and nature (the feminine), it has been translated into most European languages. Tokarczuk has said of the novel: "I always wanted to write a book such as this. One that creates and describes a world. it is the story of a world that, like all things living, Is born, develops, and then dies." Kitchens, bedrooms, childhood memories, dreams and insomnia, reminiscences, and amnesia - these are part of the existential and acoustic spaces from which the voices of Tokarczuk''s tale come, her "boxes in boxes."

Trzy kobiety, babka, córka i wnuczka, spotykają na swojej drodze śmierć. Stają przed koniecznością spojrzenia na własne życie od nowa. Każda z nich szuka dla siebie właściwego miejsca. Choć są przedstawicielkami różnych pokoleń tej samej rodziny, ich światy nie przystają do siebie.
