Autor ovšem v knize tvrdí, že politická a ekonomická svoboda jsou neoddělitelně spjaty – jedno bez druhého nemůže existovat.Ohledně přínosu politické svobody se dnes již spory nevedou, na straně ekonomických zásahů ale taková shoda nepanuje. Centralizace rozhodování a masivní vládní zásahy do hospodářství jsou i dnes na denním pořádku a Friedmanova kniha má v tomto ohledu čtenáři stále co nabídnout. Autor argumentuje pro laissez faire a svobodnou volbu jednotlivce před vládními zásahy do trhů prostřednictvím cel, dotací a regulací.
