Unclaimed
Jessica Farleigh is desperate. She’s a courtesan, and when she’s asked to seduce Sir Mark and destroy his good name in exchange for enough money to solve all her problems, she agrees. There is, after all, no such thing as a good man, and she should know. She’s known men all her life. Sir Mark Turner wrote the book on male chastity—literally—and made a name for himself as an upright moralist. But he’s also a romantic, and he’s been waiting for the right woman to share his life, his heart, and yes, his bed. Jessica can’t fall in love with him. She can’t let herself respect him. And by the time she realizes she’s in love with him, it’s too late. The only way to win the freedom she needs is to destroy the most honorable man she’s ever met. Note: This book was originally released in 2011. This is a rerelease with an added epilogue.

Geographic Information and Cartography for Risk and Crisis Management

release date: Mar 15, 2010
Geographic Information and Cartography for Risk and Crisis Management
Cartography and geographic information (GI) are remarkably appropriate for the requirements of early warning (EW) and crisis management (CM). The use of geospatial technology has increased tremendously in the last years. ICT has changed from just using maps created in advance, to new approaches, allowing individuals (decision-makers) to use cartography interactively, on the basis of individual user's requirements. The new generation of cartographic visualizations based on standardisation, formal modelling, use of sensors, semantics and ontology, allows for the better adaptation of information to the needs of the users. In order to design a new framework in pre-disaster and disaster management safety/security/privacy aspects of institutions and citizens need to be considered. All this can only be achieved by demonstrating new research achievements, sharing best practices (e.g. in the health area) and working towards the wider acceptance of geospatial technology in society, with the help of education and media. This book will outline research frontiers and applications of cartography and GI in EW and CM and document their roles and potentials in wider processes going on in information/knowledge-based societies.

Intersection
Many organizations struggle with the dynamics and the complexity of today's social ecosystems that connect everyone and everything, everywhere and all the time. Facing challenges at the intersection of business models, technical developments, and human needs, modern enterprises must overcome the siloed thinking and isolated efforts of the past, and instead address their relationships to people holistically. In Intersection, Milan Guenther introduces a Strategic Design approach that aligns the overarching efforts of Branding, Enterprise Architecture, and Experience Design, and sets them on a common course to shape tomorrow's enterprises. This book gives designers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders a model and a comprehensive vocabulary for tackling such deep-rooted challenges. The Enterprise Design framework cuts through the complexity of Strategic Design work, showing how to navigate key aspects and bridge diverging viewpoints. In 9 case studies, the author looks at the way companies like SAP, BBVA, IKEA, and Jeppesen (a Boeing Company) apply design thinking and practice to shape their enterprises. Moving from strategy to conceptual design and concrete results, Intersection shows what is relevant at which point, and what expertise to involve. - Teaches how to align business strategy with Brand Identity, Customer Experience, and Enterprise Architecture initiatives as part of a consolidated enterprise-wide design practice to achieve stakeholder value - Provides a framework for designing systems, products and services as the building blocks of a consistent and coherent experience for all stakeholders in the wider enterprise, joining strategic considerations with the delivery of tangible outcomes - Explains how to make results such as websites, apps, objects, platforms, or environments part of a larger system that orchestrates enterprise touchpoints with people

Interdisciplinary Planning

Interdisciplinary Planning
Critiques of traditional urban planning are numerous. The debate about direction within the profession and why urban planning seems to be in a state of despair continues. However, and as Milan J. Dluhy and Kan Chen note, the more critical issue is the future direction of planning, particularly interdisciplinary planning. In this regard, they note five principal areas of concern: planning is action research, planning is knowledge driven, planning is both process and technologically oriented, planning is interdisciplinary, and planning is adaptive to emerging concerns. Reviewing the literature and empirical studies on roles and attitudes, the editors note that planners seem committed to symbols and expressions of advocacy as well as traditional planning doctrine. This emphasizes rational planning and neutral policy roles for practitioners. Without a guiding theory to give a unified approach to practice, planners remain free to select the role most compatible with their personal background and training. This volume asserts that diversity need not be a drawback as long as careful analysis and open planning processes are used. This title will be an invaluable resource. Part I illustrates the critical dilemmas in planning, Part II focuses on planning skills and orientations, the third part focuses sharply on planning roles, while the final section answers a fundamental question: can interdisciplinary planning offer a more useful perspective than others on how to achieve more successful planning outcomes?

Exercising Control of the Sea

release date: Oct 14, 2020
Exercising Control of the Sea
This book explains both the strategic and the operational aspects of exercising control of the sea. The struggle for sea control consists of three mutually related and overlapping phases: obtaining, maintaining and exercising sea control. It is in the phase of exercising sea control when one’s strategic or operational success is exploited; otherwise, the fruits of victories achieved would be wasted. This work describes the strategy of a stronger side in wartime after a desired degree of control has been obtained, which is followed by a discussion on the objectives and main methods used in exercising sea control. The remaining chapters explain and analyze in some detail each of the main methods of exercising sea control: defence and protection of one’s own and destruction/neutralization of the enemy’s military-economic potential at sea, capturing the enemy’s operationally important positions ashore, destroying/weakening the enemy’s military-economic potential ashore and supporting one’s ground forces in their offensive and defensive operations on the coast. This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, sea power and naval history.

A Portrait of Rose

release date: Jul 02, 2022
A Portrait of Rose
Milan Svanderlik's mother, Rose, was born in 1908 in rural Croatia, then still part of the mighty Hapsburg Empire. This portrait of her depicts a rustic childhood and adolescence on the family farm, overseen by her talented and strong-minded mother, Christina, effectively the matriarch of the family, particularly after her husband returns from the Great War a broken man. But village life is not for Rose and she dreams of the more sophisticated life of towns and cities. Her passport to freedom is the striking Theo, an officer in the Royal Yugoslav Army. They marry and after some years on the military base of a country town, where they have two children, the family is posted to Zagreb, the cosmopolitan capital, where Rose enjoys the happiest years of her life. As World War II looms, Theo's unit is posted to Petrinja, an important garrison town, where Rose has to face her greatest challenges. As the Yugoslav Army disintegrates, Theo simply disappears, leaving Rose to fend for herself and their children, Vera and Mirko. With her husband suspected of joining Tito's Partisans, making him a traitor in the eyes of Croatia's new nationalist rulers, Rose and the children are threatened with the concentration camps. In the nick of time, two guardian angels appear and Rose and her family are safe from the threats of fascist militias. But what will happen when the war takes an unexpected turn? Will Rose come to be seen as a traitor herself? And what will her husband think if and when he ever returns? This Portrait, the story of a long life lived through the 20th century's most turbulent times, is illustrated with 61 remarkable contemporary photographs, bringing to life the period from 1908 to 1946.

Robust Digital Processing of Speech Signals

release date: Jun 06, 2017
Robust Digital Processing of Speech Signals
This book focuses on speech signal phenomena, presenting a robustification of the usual speech generation models with regard to the presumed types of excitation signals, which is equivalent to the introduction of a class of nonlinear models and the corresponding criterion functions for parameter estimation. Compared to the general class of nonlinear models, such as various neural networks, these models possess good properties of controlled complexity, the option of working in “online” mode, as well as a low information volume for efficient speech encoding and transmission. Providing comprehensive insights, the book is based on the authors’ research, which has already been published, supplemented by additional texts discussing general considerations of speech modeling, linear predictive analysis and robust parameter estimation.

Airport Analysis, Planning, and Design

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Airport Analysis, Planning, and Design
Airports are components of the air transport system together with the ATC (Air Traffic Control), and airlines. Many existing airports have been confronted with increasing requirements for providing the sufficient airside and landside capacity to accommodate generally growing but increasingly volatile and uncertain air transport demand, efficiently, effectively, and safely. This demand has consisted of aircraft movements, passengers, and freight shipments. In parallel, the environmental constraints in terms of noise, air pollution, and land use (take) have strengthened. Under such circumstances, both existing and particularly new airports will have to use the advanced concepts and methods for analysis and forecasting of the airport demand, and planning and design of the airside and landside capacity. These will also include developing the short-term and the long-term solutions for matching capacity to demand in order to mitigate expected congestion and delays as well as the multidimensional examination of the infrastructural, technical, technological, operational, economic, environmental, and social airport performance. This book provides an insight into these and other challenges, with which the existing and future airports are to be increasingly faced in the 21st century.

Maritime Strategy and Sea Control

release date: Apr 14, 2016
Maritime Strategy and Sea Control
This book focuses on the key naval strategic objectives of obtaining and maintaining sea control. During times of war, sea control, or the ability of combatants to enjoy naval dominance, plays a crucial role in that side’s ability to attain overall victory. This book explains and analyzes in much greater detail sea control in all its complexities, and describes the main methods of obtaining and maintaining it. Building on the views of naval classical thinkers, this book utilizes historical examples to illustrate the main methods of sea control. Each chapter focuses on a particular method, including destroying the enemy forces by a decisive action, destroying enemy forces over time-attrition, containing enemy fleet, choke point control, and capturing important enemy's positions/basing area, The aim is to provide a comprehensive theory and practice of the struggle for sea control at the operational level. It should therefore provide a guide to practitioners on how to plan and conduct operational warfare at sea. The book will be of much interest to students of naval strategy, defence studies and security studies.

Tracing the Unspoken

Tracing the Unspoken
Poetry. LGBTQIA Studies. TRACING THE UNSPOKEN is the English-language debut of an award-winning Slovenian poet and translator, which dares to openly speak (or write) the name of gay desire, in these compact, precise poems in prose. "In TRACING THE UNSPOKEN, Milan Selj has compiled a ledger of obsession: by applying language to shapeless silence, the individual tries to make sense of desire. In these fragments of narrative, the tacit, the implicit, the unspoken and the unspeakable are all eventually given voice. Passion is blocked by indifference, indifference unblocked by passion. And somehow love, once put into words, survives to thrive. The process is compelling, the expression eloquent."--Gregory Woods "Instants of great sexual and emotional tension, caught in needle-sharp language of utter clarity and purity."--Christopher Whyte
