Community Organizing

release date: Apr 01, 2012
Community Organizing
This book provides a brief introduction to what is variously called "faith-based," "congregation-based," and "institution-based" community organizing. Grounded in a composite case study of an actual organizing effort, it shows how local communities can be organized for power. Key organizing concepts and strategies are illustrated with stories of real encounters with leaders, communities, and powerful opposition figures. In the approach described here, civic and religious institutions come together to give the community a collective voice. Organizers help a community build a powerful organization rooted in core values of democracy and the social justice teachings of the world''s great religious traditions. Saul Alinsky developed the foundations of the tradition of organizing described here, an approach that remains dominant in the U.S. today. Alinsky rooted power deeply in the lives, relationships and institutions of marginalized and oppressed people. In his early organizing days, his organizations brought together a wide range of institutions: religious congregations and labor unions, as well as mutual aid, self-help, athletic, sororal and fraternal, neighborhood and other voluntary associations. By the late 1970s, as non-congregational neighborhood associations fell into decline, organizers in the Alinsky tradition started looking more carefully at how to sustain the vibrancy of the religious institutions that remained. Organizers sought to help congregation members become co-creators, rather than consumers, of the life of their churches, and worked to help members connect their faith more directly to action in the world. In this way, they helped make both faith and the action more meaningful. This little book tells the story of one congregation that was a member of a "broadly-based community organization," and how a community organizer assisted its development as a true community.

Hundred of books have been published about Florida writers. This small book focuses only on writers that I have enjoyed and who are no longer alive at the time of publication in January 2017. The volume includes both fiction and non-fiction authors. All of them have some things in common: they all wrote books and stories with Florida story lines and settings, and they are all dead. Many of them lived in Florida, but not all of them. Each article about an author includes a photograph, birth date, and date of death. This book is my effort to keep their memories alive through introducing them and their writing to a new audience whom I hope will enjoy their work as much as I have.

A Community Organizer's Tale
"The rise and fall of the multi-issue Mission Coalition Organization is recounted in [this book], a richly detailed story of people power set in San Francisco''s predominantly Latino Mission District. ... [T]he organization defeated urban renewal, negotiated jobs for the unemployed, and protected low-income tenants from exorbitant rents until it was ultimately weakened by federal "Model Cities" funding. Embodying the concept ... that "change comes from below" and combining colorful stories, lessons on organizaing for social and economic justice, public policy analysis, a keen eye for American politics, and reflection on democratic theory, this is a thoughtful and hopeful antidote to cynicism, apathy, and powerlessness."--Back cover.

Herb Mills

release date: May 18, 2021
Herb Mills
Herb Mills, 1931 - 2018Herb Mills was on his way to a PhD and career at a major university as a brilliant political theorist when he dropped out of the University of California and became a longshoreman, and a member of the independent International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), long known for its militancy and radical program, and its President Harry Bridges who on four separate occasions the United States government sought (unsuccessfully) to deport because of his alleged membership in the Communist Party. At Berkeley, Herb was an important early 1960s leader in the emerging northern student movement, whose birthplace was in many ways there. Representing the student movement, he travelled nationally to speak against the House Un-American Activities Committee''s campaign to make the student movement a Communist plot. In ILWU, Herb rose from the rank-and-file to become a shop steward, chair of the steward''s council, business agent and secretary-treasurer of Local 10. He was a delegate to the coast-wide contract negotiating committee, strategist of ILWU''s successful effort to stop U.S. arms shipments to the dictatorship in El Salvador, and similarly conceived the plan that saved South Korean leader and later elected president Kim Dae Jung from the military dictatorship''s plan to execute him. (Kim invited Herb as his guest to the inauguration.) Within the union, Herb became a major Bridges'' and Mechanization & Modernization (M&M) Agreement critic because it undermined the solidarity of the union. Herb wrote extensively about his longshore work and the union. He engaged in four-days of interviews with Harvey Schwartz, ILWU oral historian. He was the key consultant to The Smithsonian''s longshoring exhibit in its permanent Transportation Section. He took a break for a year and completed his PhD on Deuel Vocational Institute, a prison near the Bay Area. Herb was the engaged father of two daughters and a son, an actor, and my best friend for 60 years. This book is a tribute to him. While I''m the editor, it expresses the collective effort of many.--Mike Miller, Editor
