The Relationships Between Ethnic Identity, Social Context, and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents

release date: Jan 01, 2013
The Relationships Between Ethnic Identity, Social Context, and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents
Ethnic identity is a construct that has been studied for decades in the field of psychology. Much of this literature has focused on contextual factors that may contribute to the development of ethnic identity, as well as how ethnic identity impacts mental health. The purpose of this study was to better understand ethnic identity across different racial and ethnic groups, which social factors are related to ethnic identity in adolescents, and the relationship between ethnic identity and adolescent depression. In a sample of 186 adolescents, ethnic identity was higher in Hispanic youth than Black, Non-Hispanic or White, Non-Hispanic youth. Greater parental support and feelings of school connectedness were predictive of concurrent ethnic identity; parental conflict was not significantly associated with ethnic identity. Ethnic identity did not significantly predict concurrent depressive symptoms. This study highlights the importance of positive social relationships in the development of adolescent ethnic identity. Future research should incorporate general measures of well-being to better understand the relationship between ethnic identity and mental health during adolescence.

Peer Sexual Harassment in Middle School
Sexual salience variables (i.e., dating, flirtatiousness, opposite sex nominations) was also a significant factor, with flirtatiousness being a significant predictor for girls and boys and dating being significant uniquely for girls. Findings indicated that risky behaviors account for a greater variance in PSH victimization in boys, whereas sexual saliency account for a greater proportion of variance in girls. Findings also indicate that 6th grade pubertal status was predictive of 8th grade PSH. These results were discussed within the context of clinical implications for schools and future research directions.

Comunicación e Intimidad

release date: Nov 18, 2011

Branding Miss G

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Branding Miss G
Many feminist organizations know just how hard it is to gain media attention for their cause. This was not a surprise to members of the Miss G___ Project for Equity in Education when they began to lobby the provincial government to include women''s studies in Ontario high schools. To overcome this obstacle, the Miss G___ Project has used creative, eye-catching images to brand its members as third wave activists who are "approachable," more ironically feminine than feminist, catching the attention of a number of mainstream newspapers and magazines. Yet is this the best approach for a feminist organization to take? In this original and important case study, Michelle Miller takes a critical look at the pros and cons of Miss G___''s media strategies. She lauds the overall success of the group, but argues that it is time for Miss G___ to rebrand its image and build its own media networks by using the alternative press and popular technology. In doing so, the Project can achieve its goal while aligning its vision with its politics.

Owning Up

release date: May 13, 2004
Owning Up
Despite the recent success of welfare reform in moving people off public assistance and into jobs, most of America''s working poor are still unable to accumulate even the most minimal of assets. Even when they are getting by, they lack many of the resources—tangible and intangible—that provide middle-class Americans with a sense of security, stability, and a stake in the future. In Owning Up, Michelle Miller-Adams demonstrates how asset-building programs, used in combination with traditional income-based support, can be an effective means for helping millions of American out of poverty. Miller-Adams expands the traditional concept of assets to encompass a range of tools, experiences, resources, and support systems that are necessary if asset building is to serve as an effective anti-poverty strategy. She identifies four types of assets that can represent sources of wealth for low-income individuals and communities: economic human social, and natural assets. Economic assets include equity, retirement savings, and other financial holdings. Human assets include education, knowledge, skills, and talents. Included among social assets are the networks of trust and reciprocity that bind communities together. Natural assets include the land, water, air and other natural resources we depend on for survival. Owning Up also examines five organizations at the forefront of building assets for the poor. Their stories are told through the eyes of individuals whose lives they have helped transform. These organizations have all developed effective strategies for building assets, and Miller-Adams identifies them as models to be emulated elsewhere. The profiled organizations include: Neighborhoods Incorporated of Battle Creek, Michigan. Its innovative strategies seek to increase home ownership and promote neighborhood revitalization in poor communities. The Watershed Research and Training Center. This local organization strengthens the natural resource-based eco
