Empty Seats

Empty Seats
Colorful, prolific stage, film, and television producer Michael "Chalky" White was born in Scotland was sent, at the age of seven, to a Swiss private school which he hated. He studied at the Sorbonne, worked on Wall Street, and as assistant to Sir Peter Daubeny, making contacts with Brecht''s Berliner Ensemble, the Moscow Art Theatre and the Comédie Française--internationally renowned companies then at their peak. In 1960, he brought Merce Cunningham and John Cage to London for the first time and created a new market for modern dance. A legendary social butterfly, he was an enthusiastic and generous host who delighted in mixing up stars from film, theater, fashion and rock music with aristocrats and civilians, keeping Swinging London swinging. In his recitation of the events of his extraordinary showbusiness life, White describes how he helped put the Monty Python team on the map and made a fortune on The Rocky Horror Show and A Chorus Line. Fabulous fun for theater fans.

Field O

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Field O
In the northwest quarter of the site of Caesarea Maritima is Field O, the location known as "the synagogue site and Jewish Quarter." Although excavated in 1956 and 1962, archaeologists and scholars researching the excavation results have been limited to seeing a brush-choked patch of excavated ruins, viewing a few artifacts in museums, and to the frustrating examination of the confusing, often contradictory published preliminary reports. For whatever reason, there was no final report published and there were no published photographs, site plans, or plans of the structures. This lack of clear understanding threatened to keep the site out of the corpus of synagogue sites forever. Now comprehensive research has discovered previously unknown records from the 1962 excavations and produced a comparative study of the 1945/46, 1956/62, and 1982/84 excavation photographs and the complete findings from the Joint Expedition to Caesarea Maritima survey and excavation seasons. Included for the first time are a site plan of the excavated remains and reconstruction drawings of the excavated structures.

The Social Origins of Christian Architecture

release date: Jan 01, 1996
The Social Origins of Christian Architecture
Early Christianity seems not to have had a highly developed institutional character. Christians met in the homes of individual members, and there was no such thing as a church building. By the fourth century, however, Christianity had become an official Roman religion, and a new architectural form, the basilica, would soon become the standard throughout the Roman world. In this volume Michael White uses literary, archaeological, and documentary sources to set the architectural history of the early church within its wider cultural context, showing how the change from house churches to public basilicas coincided with crucial developments in the social aspects and religious practices of the emergent Christian movement.
