The Girl and The Flowers
Set during the reign of King George III, The Girl and The Flowers is a poignant tale of love, loss, and resilience. The story follows young Mary, who lives in a coastal village with her family. Her grandfather, Captain William Hawthorne, is a seasoned mariner and captain of a grand merchant ship. Before departing on a perilous voyage, he entrusts Mary with two boxes of rare flower bulbs from distant lands, asking her to care for them in his absence. As Mary plants the bulbs, the responsibility quickly becomes overwhelming. Her inexperience and the repetitive nature of the task lead to neglect, and the flowers begin to wilt. Then, devastating news arrives: Captain Hawthorne''s ship has sunk, with no survivors. Heartbroken, Mary blames the flowers for her grandfather''s death and, in a moment of anguish, smashes several pots. But soon, she gathers herself and tends to the remaining plants with renewed dedication, determined to honour his memory. Later, a mysterious message leaves her parents both bewildered and hopeful. On Mary''s birthday, a grand carriage arrives, revealing a miraculous surprise: Captain Hawthorne is alive, accompanied by none other than King George III, who had sent him on a secret mission. The reunion is marked by the unexpected blooming of the flowers, symbolising hope and renewal. The story concludes with Mary as a successful shipowner, her and her grandfather''s graves adorned with the same flowers that once connected them across the seas and years.

The Modernization of Prose Romance

The Modernization of Prose Romance
"Radical" prose romance is that fictional form which is firmly based on the root structures and conventions of romance narrative. Unlike the "novelized" romance, which has been displaced by the mimetic patterns of the novel in the direction of realism, radical romance (as it is developed into a modern form by Morris and MacDonald) is "re-displaced" in the direction of myth and customarily involves an "other-world" journey beyond the boundaries of ordinary experience. As a fictional form, the genre is highly conventional and must be approached from a critical perspective based on its own formative principles rather than the alien critical perspective of the novel. Consequently, this study begins with an analysis of the principal structural features of the genre. The general framework of this analysis is Aristotelean and centers around the mythos, ethos, lexis, and dianoia of the genre. Mythos is, of course, the heart of romance, and the typical narrative structure is a processional sequence of adventures which follow a tri-part pattern of leaving, adventure and return. The central events take place in a "fabulous" realm in which formal conventions and motifs serve to ritualize the pattern of adventure. Ethos in romance will be subordinated to mythos, though in the modern form of the genre there is invariably an interest in the archetypal dimensions of character. As in Spenser and Morris, lexis will be a formal embellishment and will serve to clarify the distance between the real and the fictional. The "meaning" of the romance quest results from the author''s development of the symbolic patterns implicit in the ritual journey, and conceptual implications will typically be carried in highly charged patterns of imagery. The dianoia of the genre as a whole may be schematized in accordance with the allegorical levels common to patristic exegesis. In other words, the literal story may be developed against a background of social, psychological or mythological ideas; or it may involve all three, since the symbolic techniques of the genre are capable of multiple, simultaneous, or polysemious implications. The distinction between the "novelized" and "radical" forms of modern prose romance becomes clarified in a survey of "the progress of romance" in England between 1750 and 1850. The Gothic romance, the Waverley Novels and the interplay between novel and romance in the early 19th-century are part of this survey. With this historical background established, the study turns to a close textual analysis of the major prose romances of Morris and MacDonald. MacDonald''s Phantastes (1858) is examined for its development of the traditional generic structures as they are adapted to the "internalized" form of the quest romance. As a descent into the unconscious, this romance naturally gravitates towards psychological themes, which are given form through the narrative and symbolic methods of the genre. In Lilith (1895), these same structural features are organized by a dominating pattern of ascent, and psychological themes merge with anagogical ones. Morris''s career as a writer is a survey in itself of various romance traditions, and his early works are outlined as an introduction to two of his late prose romances: The Wood Beyond the World (1894) and The Well at the World''s End (1896). The former combines an almost classical simplicity of structure with a modern concern for the complexities of sexuality. The latter work provides an opportunity to examine the polysemious development of political, psychological and mythological themes within the organizing framework of the other-world romance.

Quantifying Effects of Substrata Chemomechanical Properties on Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cell Adhesion and Morphology

Quantifying Effects of Substrata Chemomechanical Properties on Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cell Adhesion and Morphology
(cont.) Through the use of a mechanically tunable class of polymer thin films called polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) developed by Rubner et al., we have demonstrated that the adhesion and morphology of human microvascular endothelial cells depend directly on the mechanical stiffness of these synthetic substrates, as quantified by the nominal elastic modulus E. Characterization of the mechanical properties and surface features of PEMs is attained via scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and SPM-enabled nanoindentation. Typical cellular response to increased substrata stiffness includes increased number of cells adhered per unit substratum area. We have further demonstrated that the chemical and mechanical signals imposed at the cell-substrata interface can be decoupled, thereby providing two independent parameters capable of controlling cell behavior. This capacity of the cell to sense and/or exert chemical and mechanical forces, in addition to initiating a sustained molecular response, is termed the chemomechanical response element. Finally, adhesion dependent mechanosensation in bacteria is explored, with respect to the chemomechanical response elements common to eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Potential applications towards the development of therapeutic materials and compounds for treatment of various disease states are discussed, with particular attention to limiting hospital acquired infections.

An Analysis of the Relationship of Perceived Assistant Principal Instructional Leadership Behaviors and Student Academic Achievement at the High School Level

release date: Jan 01, 2018
An Analysis of the Relationship of Perceived Assistant Principal Instructional Leadership Behaviors and Student Academic Achievement at the High School Level
The primary purpose of the study was to determine what correlational and descriptive relationships could be found between self-perceived leadership behaviors of assistant principals and campus student achievement at the high school level. The study was based on the research by Marzano, Waters, and McNulty (2003) that identified 21 leadership behaviors. A total of 200 assistant principals at the high school level in Texas were surveyed. Respondents were selected from the 20 Educational Service Center regions of the state. A random sample of high schools with four population levels were selected for the study. Of the potential 200 participants, 23 respondents completed the survey. The study used a stratified random sampling procedure to identify assistant principals across the state. A Pearson correlation was used to determine any statistical significance or correlation to campus student achievement in relationships to assistant principal self-perceived behaviors. Population of the study was N = 23. Results of the study suggest that there were some positive relationships between self-perceived leadership behaviors and student achievement. Some behaviors indicated positive relationship to leadership behaviors. STAAR campus achievement scores from 2014-2015 were used to identify potential relationships to these behaviors. Three content areas were covered which included content areas of All Subjects, Math, and Reading at the high school level. In All Subjects, small positive correlations were found between leadership behaviors and campus student achievement. In Math, there were positive correlations and some statistical significance found. For Reading, positive correlations and some statistical significance was found. Future recommendations would be to explore specific leadership behavior traits with a larger population to determine if any relationships exists between leadership behavior and campus student achievement.
