A Different View

release date: Nov 01, 2008
A Different View
Six billion people in the world, six billion different opinions of how the world is viewed out of ones own environment. Steves environment is not much different than a lot of others, except for the fact that by the age of five he had already experienced two heart attacks, and by age ten, he had one of the very first open-heart surgeries in the United States. When he entered his teenage years, he became a full-blown alcoholic before he turned fourteen years of age. This coupled with other dysfunctional problems was probably the reason Steve was granted a suspended ten-year prison sentence around his eighteenth birthday. What makes this authors poems so unique is the fact that when he retired from the California Department of Corrections, he was a chartered member of their crisis response team, holding the position of primary negotiator. The poems in this book are a reflection of how this author viewed his world in his environments of dysfunction and success.

Evolution and Ecology of the Organism

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Evolution and Ecology of the Organism
For sophomore- to junior-level courses in Evolution, with an Introductory Biology prerequisite. This text introduces biology majors to the basic concepts of the fields comprising Darwinian biology: population genetics, population ecology, community ecology, macroevolution, physiological ecology, systematics, and functional morphology. The general theme is the interconnectedness of organism, environment, and evolution. Just as biochemistry and molecular biology provide the foundation for our understanding of the cell, evolutionary biology and ecology are used to construct a foundation for understanding the organism. Using evocative language and an eye-catching magazine format, the authors aim to prepare undergraduates for more advanced specialist courses in Darwinian biology as they pursue their degrees.

The Antithetical Other

Methuselah Flies

Methuselah Flies
Methuselah Flies presents a trailblazing project on the biology of aging. It describes research on the first organisms to have their lifespan increased, and their aging slowed, by hereditary manipulation. These organisms are fruit flies from the species Drosophila melanogaster, the great workhorse of genetics. Michael Rose and his colleagues have been able to double the lifespan of these insects, and improved their health in numerous respects as well. The study of these flies with postponed aging is one of the best means we have of understanding, and ultimately achieving, the postponement of aging in humans. As such, the carefully presented detail of this book will be of value to research devoted to the understanding and control of aging.Methuselah Flies: ? is a tightly edited distillation of twenty years of work by many scientists? contains the original publications regarding the longer-lived fruit flies? offers commentaries on each of the topics covered ? new, short essays that put the individual research papers in a wider context? gives full access to the original data ? captures the scientific significance of postponed aging for a wide academic audienc

Interpersonal Psychotherapy - A Clinician's Guide

release date: Feb 28, 2003
Interpersonal Psychotherapy - A Clinician's Guide
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a treatment that helps to reduce psychological symptoms by intervening in relationship difficulties. This book highlights common clinical issues and covers an extensive range of interpersonal problems and psychopathology for which IPT is applicable. It draws on theoretical and research aspects in order to inform the therapist's clinical choices in conducting IPT and other focal and structured psychotherapies in general. Interpersonal Psychotherapy - A Clinician's Guide provides a comprehensive manual for experienced therapists and those undergoing specific IPT training. Undergraduate and graduate psychologists beginning studies in this field will also find this a user-friendly guide to IPT.

Stephen Crane, Journalism, and the Making of Modern American Literature
This critical study of Stephen Crane's journalism examines the climate of change that had begun to blur the line between non-fiction writing and fiction in Crane's era and provides insight into the masculine aesthetic Crane championed in his urban reportage, travel writing and war correspondence.

Evolutionary Biology of Aging

release date: Jan 01, 1991
Evolutionary Biology of Aging
This unique book looks at the biology of aging from a fundamentally new perspective, one based on evolutionary theory rather than traditional concepts which emphasize molecular and cellular processes. The basis for this approach lies in the fact that natural selection, as a powerful determining force, tends to decline in importance with age. Many of the characteristics we associate with aging, the author argues, are more the result of this decline than any mechanical imperative contained within organic structures. This theory in turn yields the most fruitful avenues for seeking answers to the problem of aging, and should be recognized as the intellectual core of gerontology and the foundation for future research. The author ably surveys the vast literature on aging, presenting mathematical, experimental, and comparative findings to illustrate and support the central thesis. The result is the first complete synthesis of this vital field. Evolutionary biologists, gerontologists, and all those concerned with the science of aging will find it a stimulating, strongly argued account.
