Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology

release date: Oct 05, 2016
Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology
On every continent and in every nation, animals unrecognized by modern science are reported on a daily basis. People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.

The Penguin Book of Ghost Stories

This terrifying selection of ghost stories brings together the very best classic works from the masters of the supernatural Phantom coaches, evil familiars, shadowy houses, spectral children and mysterious doppelgangers haunt these tales. They range from the famous, such as M. R. James''s tale of an ancient curse, ''Oh, Whistle, and I''ll Come To You, My Lad'' and W. W. Jacobs''s story of gruesome wish-fulfilment, ''The Monkey''s Paw'', to lesser-known masterpieces: Robert Louis Stevenson''s ''Thrawn Janet'', telling of a parish priest tormented for life by his encounter with the undead; Charles Dickens''s unsettling account of a railway signal-man and an ominous portent; and Edward Bulwer Lytton''s ''The Haunted and the Haunters'', where a cursed house harbours a diabolical secret. Michael Newton''s introduction discusses why ghost stories scare us and why they flourished from the mid-nineteenth to early-twentieth century, examining their changing conventions throughout history. This edition also includes further reading, notes, a glossary and a chronology. Edited with an introduction and notes by Michael Newton

The Texarkana Moonlight Murders

release date: May 21, 2013
The Texarkana Moonlight Murders
In 1946, years before the phrase "serial murder" was coined, a masked killer terrorized the town of Texarkana on the Texas-Arkansas border. Striking five times within a ten-week period, always at night, the prowler claimed six lives and left three other victims wounded. Survivors told police that their assailant was a man, but could supply little else. A local newspaper dubbed him the Phantom Killer, and it stuck. Other reporters called the faceless predator the "Moonlight Murderer," though the lunar cycle had nothing to do with the crimes. Texarkana''s phantom was not America''s first serial slayer; he certainly was not the worst, either in body count or sheer brutality. But he has left a crimson mark on history as one of those who got away. Like the elusive Axeman of New Orleans, Cleveland''s Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, and San Francisco''s Zodiac Killer, the Phantom Killer left a haunting mystery behind. This is the definitive story of that mystery.

"Don't Shoot, G-Men!"

release date: Oct 07, 2021
"Don't Shoot, G-Men!"
Between 1933 and 1939, the FBI pursued an aggressive, highly publicized nationwide campaign against a succession of Depression era "public enemies," including John Dillinger, George "Baby Face" Nelson, Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd, George "Machine Gun Kelly" Barnes, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, and the Ma Barker Gang. Bureau Director J. Edgar Hoover''s successes in this crusade made him the hero of law and order in the public mind. This historical analysis reveals the agency''s often illegal tactics, including torture, frame-ups, and summary executions--later expanded throughout Hoover''s 48-year reign in Washington, D.C., and exposed only after his death (some say murder) in 1972.

Iceman of Brooklyn

release date: Apr 15, 2021
Iceman of Brooklyn
Largely forgotten now, Frankie Yale was an influential New York mobster of the early 20th century whose proteges included future leaders of New York''s five Mafia families and Chicago''s outfit. His influence extended to Chicago, where he personally committed two of the city''s most notorious underworld assassinations and waged a five-year war to wrest control of Brooklyn''s docks from Irish rivals. His murder marked New York City''s first use of a Tommy gun in gangland warfare, the same weapon used in Chicago''s St. Valentine''s Day massacre seven months later. Yale''s passing destabilized Gotham''s Mafia, paving the way for an upheaval that modified and modernized the structure of American syndicated crime for the next six decades. Despite Yale''s prominence during his life, this is the first biography to survey his life and career.

Boss of Murder, Inc.

release date: Apr 06, 2020
Boss of Murder, Inc.
Umberto Anastasio, better known as Albert Anastasia, was an Italian-American mobster and hitman who became one of the deadliest criminals in American history and one of the founders of the modern American Mafia in New York City. For all-out savagery and ruthlessness, few other leaders of the Mafia worldwide have rivaled Anastasia, known to peers as "The Mad Hatter" and to journalists as "The Lord High Executioner." After escaping a death sentence in 1921 and multiple other arrests for murder, he later served as director of the national crime syndicate''s contract murder department ("Murder, Inc.") from 1931 until informers brought it down ten years later. By 1951 he led one of New York City''s Five Families, a post he held until his public barbershop assassination in October 1957. This first-ever book-length biography of Anastasia traces the mobster''s life and the ripple effects his career had on the American crime world. The story also tracks his brothers and their families, while debunking certain widespread myths about their parentage, various deportations, trials, convictions, and eventual retirement from the mob, dead or alive.

Unsolved Civil Rights Murder Cases, 1934-1970

release date: Feb 11, 2016
Unsolved Civil Rights Murder Cases, 1934-1970
The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act of 2007 called for review and reinvestigation of "violations of criminal civil rights statutes that occurred not later than December 31, 1969, and resulted in a death." The U.S. Attorney General''s review observed that date, while examining cases from 1936 (a date not specified in the Till Act) onward. In selecting violations for review, certain "headline" cases were included while others meeting the same criteria were not considered. This first full-length survey of American civil rights "cold cases" examines unsolved racially motivated murders over nearly four decades, beginning in 1934. The author covers all cases reviewed by the federal government to date, as well as a larger number of cases that were ignored without official explanation.

Serial Killer Quarterly Vol.1 No.3 “Unsolved in North America”

release date: Sep 29, 2014
Serial Killer Quarterly Vol.1 No.3 “Unsolved in North America”
Another triple feature! “Unsolved in North America” - the third issue of Serial Killer Quarterly - focuses on 6 American and 2 Canadian cases of multiple murderer in which the slayer has eluded justice. Three years before Jack the Ripper stalked the streets of Whitechapel, a bold and barefoot killer was slipping into Austin''s outbuildings to murder and rape black servant girls, sometimes after death. In his Servant Girl Annihilator, acclaimed true crime writer Harold Schechter drags this gruesome piece of Texan history back into the light for modern eyes to behold. 2500 miles north as the crow flies, and 20 years later, a series of bizarre decapitation/arson murders commenced in the gold-gutted Yukon. Canadian serial murder specialist Lee Mellor takes a look at these slayings, along with providing nail-biting articles on America''s most infamous unsolved serial murder case, the Zodiac Killer of San Franscisco, as well as the Montreal Child Murders: a spate of tragic pedophile killings which plagued the city throughout the Eighties. Another Franco-American cultural centre was shaken to the core between 1918-1919, when the shadowy Axeman of New Orleans slashed and bludgeoned unsuspecting Italian couples in their beds. Grinning Man Press co-founder Aaron Elliott tells of this jazz-happy native of Tartarus, and his possible (but improbable) connection to organized crime. The mob also appear as unlikely suspects in prolific author Michael Newton''s The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. Set against the backdrop of prohibition-era Cleveland, a seemingly-bisexual butcher left at least 10 victims dismembered and disfigured in and around the city while legendary detective Eliot Ness faltered in his attempts to capture the perpetrator. In more recent events, Robert Hoshowsky and Kim Cresswell reveal the details of intriguing serial murder mysteries on America''s two coasts: California''s menacing Golden State Killer (aka the Original Night Stalker) and New York''s Long Island Serial Killer. Considering how many of these offenders may still be at large and lurking in a community near you, Grinning Man Press warns that “Unsolved in North America” may destabilize your sense of personal security, result in intense fear and paranoia, and lead you to invest great quantities of money in alarm systems, intricate locks, and firearms.

In direct contrast to Keyes''s secretive slayings, the Beltway Snipers, John Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, murdered random civilians in broad daylight and openly taunted the authorities. Michael Newton - author of 265 books including the groundbreaking Encyclopedia of Serial Killers - details their three week reign of terror in his feature "Islam Will Explode". Lee Mellor''s "Web of Spiders" discusses the milestone case of "Slavemaster" John Edward Robinson: the Internet''s first serial killer. Other articles in "21st Century Psychos" include: "Love in the Ashes" - Arthur Ellis-award nominee Robert J. Hoshowsky takes on Sheila Labarre - an aging nymphomaniac who seduced, slaughtered, and incinerated three male victims on her New Hampshire farm, challenging our views on the nature of female serial killers forever. "The Interview" - Curtis Yateman''s impressionistic look at the 2009-2010 murders committed by Canadian Airforce base commander Col. Russell Williams. "Checkmate" - The story of post-Soviet Russia''s most prolific serial slaughterer, "Chessboard Killer" Alexander Pichushkin, as recounted by Grinning Man Press co-founder Aaron Elliott. "Canada''s Killer Countryboy?" - Award-winning author,Kim Cresswell, sheds light on clean-cut "country boy" Cody Legebokoff, who at the age of 21 was charged with the murders of four women in western Canada.
