United States Navy Destroyers
This pictorial history examines the key role played by US Navy destroyers from the turn of the twentieth century through the Cold War and beyond. The first sixteen United States Navy destroyers were ordered in 1898. Prior to America’s entry into the First World War, another sixty-three destroyers were commissioned and, due to the U-boat threat, 267 more were authorized by Congress once hostilities were joined. Between 1932 and Pearl Harbor ten new classes totaling 169 destroyers came into service. During the Second World War, American shipyards turned out a further 334 vessels. Of the three classes, the 175 Fletcher-class were judged the most successful. The Cold War years saw the development of seven more classes, while more recent additions include eighty-two of the stealth-shaped Arleigh Burke class. In this comprehensive account, author and military expert Michael Green combines a superb collection of historical images with an authoritative text.

Countering Coercion in Maritime Asia

release date: May 24, 2017
Countering Coercion in Maritime Asia
In the past decade, tensions in Asia have risen as Beijing has become more assertive in maritime disputes with its neighbors and the United States. Although taking place below the threshold of direct military confrontation, China’s assertiveness frequently involves coercive elements that put at risk existing rules and norms; physical control of disputed waters and territory; and the credibility of U.S. security commitments. Regional leaders have expressed increasing alarm that such “gray zone” coercion threatens to destabilize the region by increasing the risk of conflict and undermining the rules-based order. Yet, the United States and its allies and partners have struggled to develop effective counters to China’s maritime coercion. This study reviews deterrence literature and nine case studies of coercion to develop recommendations for how the United States and its allies and partners could counter gray zone activity.

Russian Symbolist Theater

release date: May 28, 2013
Russian Symbolist Theater
Although by writers better known for their verse and narrative prose, the plays of the Symbolists were not intended, like the dramatic poems of the Romantics, for the study rather than the stage. Instead, they are highly theatrical creations in a new style that demanded a new style of production. Meyerhold played a decisive role in the new Symbolist theatre and it was his production of Blok’s The Puppet Show in Komissarzhevskaya’s Theatre that launched the new direction in Russian drama. Among the works collected here are the plays The Puppet Show and The Rose and the Cross (Blok), The Triumph of Death (Sologub), The Comedy of Alexis and The Venetian Madcaps (Kuzmin), Thamyris Kitharodos (Annensky), and The Tragedy of Judas (Remizov) and essays by Briusov, Blok, Ivanov, Bely, Sologub, and Andreyev. Rounding out this essential anthology are Michael Green’s general introduction, as well as insightful prefaces for each writer, placing the plays and essays into their cultural and historical contexts.

M2/M3 Bradley at War

release date: Nov 15, 2007
M2/M3 Bradley at War
If ever there were an armored fighting vehicle that today''s soldier could love, it would be the Bradley: of 2,200 that muscled through Operation Desert Storm, only three were disabled. In a full-scale, fully detailed look at the M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle System, Michael Green, veteran writer on military machines and tour guide at a tank museum, and co-author James D. Brown conduct readers through the nuts and bolts, production history, and wartime work of the stalwart Bradley. Made to carry infantry squads safely to critical points on the battlefield and to perform cavalry scout missions, the Bradley is uniquely able to close in on and destroy enemy forces in support of mounted and dismounted infantry and cavalry combat operations. It also, as recent experience demonstrates, provides a high degree of battlefield survivability. Unlike the M113 family it replaced, however, the Bradley is no mere "battle taxi." With the 25mm automatic cannon as its main armament and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, the Bradley is capable of defeating the majority of armored vehicles it is likely to encounter on the battlefield. With pictures, diagrams, details of weaponry, and accounts of action, this book about the M2/M3 Bradley gives readers a real sense of how much this hardworking vehicle has contributed to American fighting power in recent years.

This book gives readers an inside look at one of the best-known American tanks from the point of view of tankers and other military personnel who experienced the M4 Sherman firsthand. With diagrams and descriptions of various components, it also details the triumph of American industry, which came into the war without a modern tank and overcame the Axis powers with 50,000 M4 Shermans. From harrowing first-person accounts of tank combat to close-ups of the M4 Sherman''s mechanical make-up, this book gives readers an unprecedented insight into the tank that, more than any other, embodied American pluck and power.

Allied Tanks of the Second World War

release date: Mar 30, 2017
Allied Tanks of the Second World War
Expert author Michael Green has compiled a full inventory of the tanks developed and deployed by the Allied armies during the six year war against Nazi Germany and her Axis partners. There were four categories of tank: Light, Medium, Heavy and Super Heavy. Combat experience proved Light tanks (such as the Stuart and T-26) to be ineffective. Medium tanks (the US M4 series, named Sherman by the British, and Russian T-34) soon dominated with their fire power, protection and mobility. The later stages of the War required the Allies to answer the Axis Panther and Tiger tanks with up-gunned and up-armoured second generation M4s, T-34-85s and the Sherman Firefly. Totally new heavy tanks such as the M-26, Pershing, Soviet KV-1 series and the British Centurion only saw action in the final months.Allied Tanks of the Second World War covers all these categories in detail as well as the few super heavy tanks such as the French Char 2C and the TOG. For an informed and highly illustrated work this book has no comparable rival.
