Aircraft Carriers of the United States Navy

release date: Apr 30, 2015
Aircraft Carriers of the United States Navy
This pictorial history of US aircraft carriers illustrates the many classes and types of carriers used by the navy from before WWII to the present day. In 1922 the US Navy commissioned its first small experimental aircraft carrier. This was followed into service by two much larger carriers in 1927 with five more being built— including three large Yorktown class—prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Then, to take the offensive against the Japanese Navy, the American Congress funded by far the largest carrier-building program in history. Since 1975, when the first of a fleet of ten nuclear-powered Nimitz class carriers was commissioned, The United States Navy’s fleet of carriers has optimized its superpower status and worldwide power projection. Yet these are due to be replaced in the decades to come with the even more sophisticated nuclear-powered Gerald R. Ford class. Compiled and written by Michael Green, Aircraft Carriers of the United States Navy contains superb images of all the different types of classes of carriers employed by the US Navy since 1922. These and its highly informative text and captions give the reader a broad overview of this fascinating subject.

Philanthrocapitalism

release date: Jun 01, 2010
Philanthrocapitalism
For philanthropists of the past, charity was often a matter of simply giving money away. For the philanthrocapitalists-the new generation of billionaires who are reshaping the way they give-it''s like business. Largely trained in the corporate world, these "social investors" are using big-business-style strategies and expecting results and accountability to match. Bill Gates, the world''s richest man, is leading the way: he has promised his entire fortune to finding a cure for the diseases that kill millions of children in the poorest countries in the world. In Philanthrocapitalism, Matthew Bishop and Michael Green examine this new movement and its implications. Proceeding from interviews with some of the most powerful people on the planet-including Gates, Bill Clinton, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, and Bono, among others-they show how a web of wealthy, motivated donors has set out to change the world.

Politics and America in Crisis

release date: Dec 30, 2009
Politics and America in Crisis
This book unravels the political developments that made the Civil War unavoidable. Politics and America in Crisis: The Coming of the Civil War examines the developments between 1846 and 1861 that pushed the nation to war to see what they reveal about the North, the South, the people leading them, and the issues separating them. As shown here, in the decade and a half before the actual outbreak of the war, the mostly southern Democratic Party''s fortunes veered from a presidential election victory in 1852 to the shocking loss of Abraham Lincoln in 1860—an event that marked the coming of age of the young antislavery Republican Party. In examining that sharp reversal, Politics and America in Crisis covers a wide range of key events, including efforts to ban slavery in territories won in the Mexican-American War, the Dred Scott decision, and John Brown''s raids.

Tiger Tanks at War

release date: Feb 15, 2008
Tiger Tanks at War
The first prototype for the Tiger tank was set to be ready for Hitlers birthday on April 20, 1942. The Henschel Company, competing with Porsche, produced the superior model, and by August of that year the formidable Tiger--or Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. H.--was in full production. This book takes us behind the scenes with the Tiger tank, reviewing the full history, the design and mechanics, and the mixed record of this machine, which was designed to outgun its Russian counterparts. Military writer Michael Green offers a close-up account--accompanied by photographs, diagrams, and maps--of how the Tiger tank operated, how it was armed, and where it succeeded brilliantly, as well as where it failed miserably. His book fills a fascinating niche in the history of military technology, and of the impact of technology on history itself.

United States Infantry Weapons of the Second World War

release date: Nov 30, 2015
United States Infantry Weapons of the Second World War
“The book looks at everything from pistols to flame throwers and from rifles to anti-tank guns . . . the package offers a lot of bang for your buck.” —War History Online During the arduous campaigns in theatres of war from the Pacific to North West Europe, American infantry weapons played a key role in the eventual victory over the Axis forces. In so doing they earned a special reputation for ruggedness and reliability. In addition to being used by US ground forces they were widely adopted by other Allied nations. Expert author Michael Green puts the full range of small arms, be they rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, pistols, machine guns as well as mortars, anti-tank weapons and close infantry support artillery under the microscope. Many names such as the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and the incomparable semi-automatic Garand will be well known whereas others (the Johnson Rifle and Reising SMG) are not. The typically informative text completes the wide range of photographic images. “Standard US infantry weapons are depicted in the hands of the troops who used them operationally. This book is especially valuable to a wide readership—military historians, collectors, re-enactors, museum curators and authors. It would also provide inspiration for military modellers searching for realistic depictions of various figures.” —Classic Arms and Militaria

Tall Wood Buildings

release date: Mar 09, 2020
Tall Wood Buildings
Tall wood buildings have been at the foreground of innovative building practice in urban contexts for a number of years. From London to Stockholm, from Vancouver to Melbourne timber buildings of up to 20 storeys have been built, are under construction or being considered. This dynamic trend was enabled by developments in the material itself, prefabrication and more flexibility in fire regulations. The low CO2 footprint of wood - often regionally sourced - is another strong argument in its favour. This publication explains the typical construction types such as panel systems, frame and hybrid systems. An international selection of 13 case studies is documented in detail with many specially prepared construction drawings, demonstrating the range of the technology.

War Stories of the Battle of the Bulge
“Told by those who lived during . . . Hitler’s last gasp attack in the West . . . a riveting book for anybody with an interest in the Second World War.” —CurledUp The powerful German counteroffensive operation codenamed “Wacht am Rhein” (Watch on the Rhine) launched against the American First Army in the early morning hours of December 16, 1944, would result in the greatest single extended land battle of World War II. To most Americans, the fierce series of battles fought in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium and Luxembourg that winter is better known as the Battle of the Bulge. Here are the first-person stories of the American soldiers who repelled the powerful German onslaught that had threatened to turn the tide of battle in Western Europe during World War II.

Unlocking The Allowable-Thought Cage Imprisoning Our Imaginations

release date: May 02, 2016
Unlocking The Allowable-Thought Cage Imprisoning Our Imaginations
More and more people are becoming aware that we are, among other things, grappling with a media-projected or company-manufactured public reality. There is a controlled and choreographed, talked about, reported on, broadcast, make-believe reality?a pretended set of norms that diverge radically from the living realities they cover over. This publicly approved and sanctioned ?truth? is in major degree a pretense, a game, a show, a dance of distractions perpetrated on the public through many forms of propaganda, puppets and deceptions. In effect, we?re taught to lock ourselves into a fixed set of allowable thoughts, a cage for our view of the real and of the possible, so we know how to think about things. We adopt the publicly sanctioned wisdom about what issues are important, how to frame the relevant priorities, how to be successful, how to fit in and be accepted, how to be ?good?, and so forth. These teachings shape and control our perceptions of reality and largely govern how we live our lives. More important than where this strange dance-in-a-cage began, is where does it stop? Can it stop? Yes, this book explains, but not easily. Not without effort. Not without some degree of strength and courage and probably not without understanding the methods and mechanisms this book presents in depth using plain and simple language.Unlocking your ?allowable-thought cage? requires becoming aware that certain controlling and limiting ?truths? exist, and that you can become increasingly aware of them once you know what to look for, how to sort through competing contradictions and how to connect the relevant dots. This unique book shows how you can reassess your thought-cage and improve it so it better conforms to your own observations and experiences. It provides a general orientation that will very likely help you clarify the way you look at even very familiar topics and situations, and generally help you gradually free your mind so you can unlock your allowable-thought cage...

Armoured Warfare in the Vietnam War

release date: Oct 30, 2014
Armoured Warfare in the Vietnam War
This pictorial history of the Indochina and Vietnam Wars captures the range of armored warfare used in the region through rare wartime photographs. The two conflicts that engulfed Indochina and Vietnam in the decades after World War II are generally thought of as infantry wars. But in fact, they both involved a significant amount of armored warfare. In this fully illustrated volume, military expert and Vietnam veteran Michael Green describes the many kinds of armored vehicles deployed and their contributions in combat. The ill-fated French Expeditionary Force of the Indochina War was largely equipped with World War II era American tanks—including M3 and M5 Stuart, M4 Sherman and M24 light tanks—as well as armored cars and half-tracks. Most of these eventually went to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, but were outdated and ineffective due to lack of logistics and training. The US Army and Marine Corps build-up in the 1960s saw vast quantities of M48 Pattons, M113 APCs and many specialist variants and improvised armored vehicles arrive in the theatre. The Australians also brought their British Centurion tanks. But it was the Russians, Chinese and North Vietnamese who won the day and their T-38-85 tanks, ZSU anti-aircraft platforms.
