Pathfinders

Pathfinders
There are few Aboriginal icons in White Australia history. From the explorer to the pioneer, the swagman to the drover’s wife, with a few bushrangers for good measure, Europeans play all the leading roles. A rare exception is the redoubtable tracker. With skills passed down over millennia, trackers could trace the movements of people across vast swathes of country. Celebrated as saviours of lost children and disoriented adults, and finders of missing livestock, they were also cursed by robbers on the run. Trackers live in the collective memory as one of the few examples of Aboriginal people’s skills being sought after in colonial society. In New South Wales alone, more than a thousand Aboriginal men and a smaller number of women toiled for authorities across the state after 1862. This book tells the often unlikely stories of trackers including Billy Bogan, Jimmy Governor, Tommy Gordon, Frank Williams and Alec Riley. Through his work on native title claims, historian Michael Bennett realised that the role of trackers – and how they moved between two worlds – has been largely unacknowledged. His important book reveals that their work grew out of traditional society and was sustained by the vast family networks that endure to this day.Pathfindersbrings the skilled and diverse work of trackers not only to the forefront of law enforcement history but to the general shared histories of black and white Australia. ‘The word tracker conjures images of the legendary Aboriginal bush experts responsible for bringing criminals to justice and finding people lost in the wild. Michael Bennett’s new book is a very welcome addition. The book charts an important though largely overlooked area of the country’s history. Aboriginal trackers hold a mythical yet obscure presence in the history of the continent. Bennett weaves back into the nation’s historical narrative these Aboriginal heroes and heroines.’ — Professor John Maynard

Revelation

Revelation
Do you ever wake up and feel compelled to do something? I woke up at 4 AM and felt compelled to write this story. The entirety of the book was written in the span of four hours. Nothing has changed outside of some spelling fixes. This book is aimed towards current believers of Christianity, although anyone should feel free to read it. Much like how the memory of a dream can fade, I don''t remember anything that''s written. Hence, I''m just the messenger.

Results of Early Implementation of Governmental Accounting Standards Board Stement No. 34 in 15 Ohio Public School Districts
The study researched the experience of treasurers in 15 Ohio public school districts in implementing Governmental Accounting Board Statement No. 34 in the districts'' annual financial reports prior to the required implementation date. Statement No. 34 is intended to make government annual financial reports more useful for and comprehensible to members of three user groups---the financial community, legislative and oversight officials, and citizens. In the study, treasurers of the 15 school districts were interviewed regarding their experience in implementing Statement No. 34, the changes in school operations resulting from implementation, and changes in questions from the three user groups about the school districts'' finances that resulted from implementation of Statement No. 34. The study found that improving the school districts'' fixed asset records was the greatest hurdle in implementing Statement No. 34, school district operations were affected little by implementation, and that questions from the three user groups about school district finances generally did not change after implementation. The majority of treasurers in the study said that Statement No. 34 was not cost-beneficial because there was little evidence that the changes it required were noticed by the three user groups; it provided few, if any, benefits to the school districts; and it increased the school districts'' costs of preparing their annual financial reports at a time when many school districts were cutting staff and programs because of revenue shortfalls.

White Boy on the Bus

White Boy on the Bus
"White Boy on the Bus is a collection of thirteen essays on race. Despite my lifelong efforts as a white man to explore and understand race relations, I still encounter racism, both internally and externally, every day. Race has always been something I''ve been compelled to write about. Most if not all of the essays I''ve sent through workshop have been returned with this caveat written in the comments, front and center: "I think you need to say that you''re white." I understood. There was a time when I was ashamed of my childhood, my whiteness; I attended a primarily black public school at a very young age, and as I ascended through grades in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, I felt as if I grew up on the borders of the city''s racial divides. I struggled to discover my own identity, often feeling more comfortable imitating and even participating in black culture than facing my whiteness. But now, after writing this manuscript, I feel more confident than ever that these experiences led me toward writing about race through the lens of whiteness. By writing about race-on how people of color are marginalized in America-I am placing myself in a literary tradition that is predominately non-white. The canon of American race relations is largely made up of writers of color, spanning from Frederick Douglass'' Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, to Richard Wright''s Native Son, to Ta-Nehesi Coates'' Between the World and Me. There are too many more to name, because for writers of color, race is not merely a subject but a category in which they are placed. ... " -- from Introduction

The Structure of Conservation

The Structure of Conservation
This thesis proposes, through a multi-layered exploration, the development of a system of computer tools for architects. The research consists of a series of "design sessions" in the context of a desert design problem. The goal is to create a knowledge-based system using a commercially available expert shell, which provides the designer with an automated interface to visual references. Data can be seen as a collection of things, while knowledge can be similarly seen as a collection of relationships between things. An expert shell is literally a program that is "empty" of knowledge, and into which a designer puts know ledge: a knowledge-base is the result. The shell itself acts as a means of manipulating that knowledge-base by an inference process that is activated by rules, or hypotheses and tests. The experimental framework of the thesis is devised to evaluate both type of inference processes in relation to their capabilities for representing design knowledge. The design problem serves to outline a methodology for understanding the process of design, but it also is the means by which a design grammar and syntax appropriate to the automated system are formally described. The intent is not to compile a vast domain of knowledge on all issues of arid lands design, but to focus on a specific architectural response to the climate: the relationship between the primary structural system and the secondary closure system. The design of a window system is the vehicle for documenting observations of the way visual references are used. From this process a descriptive system and body of "expert" rules are developed to define the function of the automated environment. The larger goal is to then relate the syntactical environment to a general image referencing system so that the expert system can act as a personal design consultant. The image referencing system is a distinct and important component of the automated environment, and as such a detailed specification of its nature and operation is intended to show the interdependence of the knowledge-base and a visual database.

Dangers of Social Media
Social networking sites are open to anyone however offer a low level of security and protection. Because teens often post detailed and specific information, they can be more easily stalked by strangers or even acquaintances. By using the text messaging service on their cell phones, computers or other electronic devices, teens engage in sexting by sending flirtatious messages back and forth. Sexting is currently illegal under federal law. It falls under the creation, distribution and possession of child porn and is a felony offense. While some lawmakers are working to change this, others are prosecuting both those taking the pictures and those possessing them.
