Realities of Criminology and Criminal Justice

release date: Dec 20, 2023
Realities of Criminology and Criminal Justice
The book is a follow-up to Lessons in Criminology and Criminal Justice, where 25 facts about crime and criminal justice were discussed. The book tells the story of 25 more facts that the author has learned in his quarter-century of working in the fields of criminology and criminal justice. The book lays out each fact, one at a time, and then presents research in support of that fact. The facts pertain to issues of crime, justice, policing, courts, corrections, race, crime prevention, biases in criminal justice, drug use and abuse, and social control more generally. Though the book is scholarly in nature, it is written for the layperson and novice student. Using humor where appropriate, but also utilizing a “tell it like it is” approach, the book will be always interesting, timely, and engaging, and occasionally funny.

Food Crime

release date: Aug 11, 2023
Food Crime
This book addresses the various forms of deviance and criminality found within the conventional food system. This system—made up of numerous producers, processors, distributors, and retailers of food—has significant, far-reaching consequences bearing upon the environment and society. Food Crime broadly outlines the processes and impacts of this food system most relevant for the academic discipline of criminology, with a focus on the negative health outcomes of the US diet (e.g., obesity and diabetes) and negative outcomes associated with the system itself (e.g., environmental degradation). The author introduces the concept of "food criminology," a new branch of criminology dedicated to the study of deviance in the food industry. Demonstrating the deviance and criminality involved in many parts of the conventional food system, this book is the first to provide exhaustive coverage of the major issues related to what can be considered food crime. Embedded in the context of state-corporate criminality, the concepts and practices exposed in this book bring attention to harms associated with the conventional food system and illustrate the degree of culpability of food companies and government agencies for these harms. This book is of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners seeking a more just and healthy food system and encourages further future research into food crimes in the disciplines of criminology, criminal justice, and sociology.

104 IN THE SHADE
In 2016 and after 19 years in the industry, film and TV editor Matthew Robinson decided to make a change. He quit his lucrative work, with a huge paycut and joined a UK charity based in a small office above West London Islamic Cultural Centre. It changed his life forever. This book is about his experiences in the world of humanitarian work, including filming a cross-Europe aid convoy to Greece; refugee camps in Lebanon and Turkey; open heart surgery on babies in Tanzania; water wells in Ethiopia and Bangladesh; food and water distributions in the desert in Somalia and Yemen; marathons in Morocco and Palestine; and a rickshaw challenge in Pakistan. It is an honest insight into the world of the charity sector, and a man who has struggled with his own personal issues in an ongoing fight to work in, and understand, a constantly changing world, where the needs and rights of people significantly vary depending on their place of birth.

The Red Tide Apocalypse Second Edition

release date: Mar 03, 2022
The Red Tide Apocalypse Second Edition
Apocalypse: To Remove the veil; a Revelation To anyone who cares. The Red Tide Apocalypse is not about the end of the world. The world goes on even if humanity doesn''t. This work explores the ramifications of a worldwide pandemic and the responses of the men and women who strive to fight against it. The victims of this pandemic transform into red eyed beasts who attack and transmit the disease to the healthy survivors. These Red Eyes are not zombies so there is no crises of religious faith, no stink of plodding corpses and no cannibalism. Instead, the infected are faster and stronger than their healthy counterparts and they retain some of their mental faculties. They also work together in their attacks against the healthy. Unlike other works, the government and military do not dissolve immediately. They fight on even as the enemy strengthens. This book details pitched battles in several US cities including Dallas, Cleveland and Little Rock as well as individual struggles within the war zones.

Neural Networks and Self-Organizing Cellular Automata
This thesis presents a framework that uses neural networks to evolve local behaviors within cellular automata to form complex collective behavior. Our framework shows how starting with an initial state and a target state for a cellular automaton, we can evolve a neural network that computes translationally invariant local interactions to form that target state. We demonstrate this framework on various test images as target states to understand its behavior and to develop optimizations. Through this, we present several novel extensions and improvements to this framework including a gradual and companion learning approach akin to transfer learning. Furthermore, we test this framework on a related problem from microbiology: predicting protein interactions from global behavior, and propose several other problems to investigate.

Criminal Injustice

Criminal Injustice
"This book examines the influence of politics and ideology on criminal justice practice. Politics refers to governing decisions about how to deal with social problems and distribute resources in society, and ideology means the beliefs and values that guide political decisions and underlie our societal institutions. The book clearly illustrates that criminal justice practice is directly and meaningfully impacted by politics and ideology, beginning with law-making. The main argument of Criminal Injustice is that politics and ideology distort America''s ideal goals of crime control and due process, oftentimes resulting in ineffective and unfair criminal justice policies. That is, politics and ideology distort the ideals of Americans found in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution"--

Social Justice, Criminal Justice

release date: Dec 14, 2015
Social Justice, Criminal Justice
Social Justice, Criminal Justice is a thought-provoking examination of the U.S. legal system, focusing on how criminal justice and social justice are related. The book provides a solid foundation of key philosophical and theoretical issues and goes on to examine the function of the law as it relates to social justice issues. The authors present and explain the foundational legal documents of the United States, and critically examine how those same documents, which espoused the rhetoric of equality for all, contribute toward the perpetuation and maintenance of a system of exclusion for groups with minority status, such as racial and ethnic minorities, the poor, women, and the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. Succinct but comprehensive, this text offers a careful examination of possible relationships between social justice theory and criminal justice practice and illuminates the role that the legal system has played in both preventing and assisting social change and power dynamics. For each identified group, important landmark court decisions are used to demonstrate the plight of the powerless and the quest for equal rights. The book provides an important perspective and understanding of the relationships among criminal justice, social justice, and the law. Suitable for undergraduate and early graduate courses in Social Justice, Justice Studies, Critical Issues, Ethics, and American Government and Law, this text provides easily digestible content for those interested in thinking critically about the U.S. legal system.

Knickerbocker Glory

release date: Sep 01, 2013
Knickerbocker Glory
Life is filled with wow moments; those moments when we see something new that really impresses us and gets our attention. These wow moments make our personal lives better and more interesting. The businesses that create these wow moments, or innovations, are typically more successful. But, what is the key to creating these innovations? How are innovations born? How can simple connections between various things be made so that something new is created? Are there steps to creating new innovations and wow moments? The answers to these questions are in this book. The Knickerbocker Glory: Tasty Innovation and Even Tastier Desserts is a book about learning to innovate using the culinary arts as inspiration. More specifically, using a little known dessert - The Knickerbocker Glory - as a model to teach a simple innovation process and guide the reader through the journey from stated purpose to wow moment. The text, infographics and insets explore how great ideas can be created, shows the importance of getting ideas off paper and into reality and discusses the importance of a team effort in innovation. The book rolls back the curtain on the specific steps to use when implementing any type of innovation program. The Knickerbocker Glory: Tasty Innovation and Even Tastier Desserts starts by introducing The Knickerbocker Glory, a tall, layered ice cream concoction eaten with a very long spoon. Although today it is seen as a classic British ice cream dessert, its origins may not be truly British but American. But what makes this dessert a great story and model for innovation? It is the story of a reinvention. The American sundae, call the Knickerbocker, reinvented for a British audience. And since the original recipe for The Knickerbocker Glory has not been recorded, it is an ideal model from which to explore innovation because of all the possibilities it represents. With a basic understanding of The Knickerbocker Glory, the book walks the reader through a process from which innovations can be born. The discussion starts with the simple steps a chef might take to create something new in the kitchen, covering the importance of having a goal, where inspiration for such a goal might come from and how experimentation is used to reach the goal. From there, a deeper definition of innovation is revealed and the six steps of innovation called the ..".ates" are defined. They are Contemplate and State; Stimulate; Formulate, Ideate, Create and Iterate. A description and instruction for each step is given in the book. The ..".ates" are then applied to The Knickerbocker Glory model; examples of how each step can be applied to create something new are provided. The journey to wow moments starts with stating the purpose. The book then details how a variety of sources of inspiration (both related and unrelated) can be found and applied to The Knickerbocker Glory model and makes the point that good stimulus and inspiration is the foundation for new and richer ideas. Examples discussed include how fusion cuisine, molecular gastronomy or the more far-fetched Apple Computer Company might be leveraged to make a new Knickerbocker Glory. Following this, the origin of The Knickerbocker Glory is used to show how inspiration can be turned into new ideas. The importance of making these ideas into real "products" and repeating them until they are perfected is also discussed. Finally, the book discusses the importance of innovating as a team and details a few insights about cooking that demonstrate that even small changes to a recipe can bring about big changes to a dish, illustrating that it might not have to be something big to bring about something that is very innovative.

Prediction of Sound and Vibration Response Using Transient Statistical Energy Analysis

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Prediction of Sound and Vibration Response Using Transient Statistical Energy Analysis
Transient sounds generated from structure-borne and airborne excitation are very common in buildings and cause the majority of disturbances in dwellings. The maximum sound pressure level corresponds well with annoyance and disturbance and current guidelines use this descriptor to describe the threshold for sleep disturbance. Hence this thesis addresses a need for methods to quantify transient sound sources and prediction models that can determine maximum sound pressure levels due to these sound sources. Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) provides a framework that describes sound radiation and structure-borne sound transmission in buildings. SEA is used in this thesis as a basis on which to develop Transient Statistical Energy Analysis (TSEA) for building acoustics. The TSEA power balance describes energy exchange between subsystems in the time domain and is controlled by the time interval. Limits for the time interval are proposed based upon energy decay and path statistics of the source subsystem. New methods are proposed for measuring and quantifying the transient power input from airborne and structure-borne excitation. Detailed analysis is also used to quantify the signal processing errors, due the time-weighted level detector and filters, associated with the measurement of maximum levels. The use of steady-state SEA coupling loss factors in TSEA for sound radiation and structure-borne sound transmission is validated through good agreement in comparisons of measurements and predictions of maximum sound and vibration levels. This validation is extended to complex transient sources that have been incorporated into TSEA, such as the ISO rubber ball, transients overlaying stationary noise and airborne transients. Case studies of heavyweight buildings show that accurate predictions of maximum sound pressure and vibration levels are given if Ns ≥ 1 and Mav ≥ 0.5. TSEA has also been validated for the prediction of structural decay curves, numerical experiments have been carried out to quantify the error in the estimation of the total loss factor and to develop an improvement to the evaluation of decay curves.

Symmetry and the Standard Model
While theoretical particle physics is an extraordinarily fascinating field, the incredibly fast pace at which it moves along, combined with the huge amount of background information necessary to perform cutting edge research, poses a formidable challenge for graduate students. This book represents the first in a series designed to assist students in the process of transitioning from coursework to research in particle physics. Rather than reading literally dozens of physics and mathematics texts, trying to assimilate the countless ideas, translate notations and perspectives, and see how it all fits together to get a holistic understanding, this series provides a detailed overview of the major mathematical and physical ideas in theoretical particle physics. Ultimately the ideas will be presented in a unified, consistent, holistic picture, where each topic is built firmly on what has come before, and all topics are related in a clear and intuitive way. This introductory text on quantum field theory and particle physics provides both a self-contained and complete introduction to not only the necessary physical ideas, but also a complete introduction to the necessary mathematical tools. Assuming minimal knowledge of undergraduate physics and mathematics, this book lays both the mathematical and physical groundwork with clear, intuitive explanations and plenty of examples. The book then continues with an exposition of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, the theory that currently seems to explain the universe apart from gravity. Furthermore, this book was written as a primer for the more advanced mathematical and physical ideas to come later in this series.
