The Galloway Hoard

The Galloway Hoard
A cache of over 100 gold, silver and other items, the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland, was unearthed by a metal detectorist in 2014. A large fundraising campaign ensured that what has come to be known as ''the Galloway Hoard'' was saved for the nation. Having lain undiscovered since the beginning of the 10th century, it now provides an extremely rare opportunity to research and reveal many lost aspects of the Viking Age. There is a chance to see the treasure at the National Museum of Scotland 18 February - 18 October 21. The exhibition will subsequently go on tour to Kirkcudbright, Aberdeen and Dundee. The accompanying book places the hoard in a wider historical context and showcases the conservation and research work currently being undertaken to understand the hoard and its secrets. Exhibition: National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, UK (29.05.-12.09.2021) / Kirkcudbright Galleries, UK (10.2021) / Aberdeen Archives, UK (2022).

UNITE History Volume 5 (1974-1992)

release date: May 01, 2023
UNITE History Volume 5 (1974-1992)
Sold as a multi-volume set – the individual volumes are also available for purchase. This volume traces the history of the TGWU from its zenith in the period of the Labour Government to its nadir in 1992. It easily divides itself into two distinct periods. The first from 1974-79 saw a reforming Labour government which, recognising trade union strength, was determined to ‘bring about a fundamental and irreversible shift in the balance of power and wealth in favour of working people’. It marked the zenith of the TGWU in which the union played an important role, overseeing the repeal of anti-union Industrial Relation Act, and the enactment of a raft of pro-worker legislation. But this was insufficient to sustain the ''Social Contract'' between the Labour Government and the Trade Unions– leading to the ‘Winter of Discontent’ and the Tory election victory of 1979. The second period, 1979-92, witnessed the nadir of the TGWU. A right wing Conservative government led by Margaret Thatcher, was determined to reverse all the gains of preceding Labour administrations. Anti-union legislation and the cruel tool of unemployment created the economic and political conditions to decimate trade unions. Defensive struggles could not stop the defeats suffered by car workers, miners, printers and dockers. Trade union membership declined in the Thatcher years, leading to a bleak period of industrial defeat and union retrenchment, characterised by mergers and reorganisation - mitigated only by positive moves to tackle endemic racism and sexism in an attempt to involve previously disregarded women and black workers.

Treasures of the Viking Age

release date: Feb 07, 2025
Treasures of the Viking Age
Over five kilograms of silver bullion, many unique and enigmatic gold objects, the rare preservation of textiles and an unusual range of other materials, make the Galloway Hoard the richest collection of Viking-age objects ever found in Britain and Ireland. Having lain undiscovered since AD 900, it now provides an opportunity to shed new light on Scotland''s international connections during the Viking Age. In 2017 an intense fundraising campaign ensured that the Galloway Hoard was saved for the nation. Since then work has been ongoing to preserve and understand it. Dr Martin Goldberg, Principal Curator of Medieval Archaeology and History, and Dr Mary Davis, Galloway Hoard Conservator, from National Museums Scotland, provide the first full description of the Hoard and place the find in a wider historical and geographical context. They describe the work that has been done so far and what lies ahead to uncover its secrets. This edition has been produced to accompany the exhibition at the South Australian Museum, Adelaide.

This summer their parents, Professor and Judge Oliphant, are busy with work and have handed them over to their kind but absentminded Aunt Ariel, who provides even less structure than their parents. Miranda daydreams about redecorating their moldy, book-filled camp; Lulu hungers for competitive sports; and Leggy, the littlest Oliphant, drives everyone crazy with her constant talk of fairies. When their odious cousins arrive unexpectedly, bringing with them all the tensions the girls thought they had left behind for the summer, the girls, who were each adopted from China, fight for their place in the family and for their beloved summer home. They discover that being an Oliphant brings lots of surprises.

Oil in Our Lamps

release date: Dec 13, 2010
Oil in Our Lamps
The diaries of Mary Davis Brown offer a rare glimpse of times past in the rural community of York County, South Carolina, during the nineteenth century, a time when faith in God and the good earth were still the pillars of family life. Born on March 21, 1822, Mary began poignantly recording her thoughts, poetry, prayers, and daily activities in 1854 upon the death of her eight-year-old son. She continued her writings through the Civil War years and until late 1901 when she was almost 80 years old. Fortunately, these diaries have survived for over a century and a half and, because of their delicate condition, now rest in a fireproof, humidity and temperature controlled vault in the South Caroliniana Library on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Oil In Our Lamps is the culmination of many years of painstaking effort by the descendants of Mary Davis Brown. Her diaries, more than worthy of publication, can now be enjoyed by modern-time folks who will find them enlightening, enriching, and heart-warming.

Clay's Tectonic Shift, 1956-1968

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Clay's Tectonic Shift, 1956-1968
"Clay''s Tectonic Shift focuses on artists John Mason (b. 1927), Kenneth Price (1935-2012), and Peter Voulkos (1924-2002) and their radical early work in postwar Los Angeles where they formed the vanguard of a new California ceramics movement. The three artists broke from the craft tradition that emphasized the function of a piece. Experimenting with scale, surface, color, and volume, their work was instrumental in elevating ceramics from a craft to a fine art. Earlier exhibitions and publications stated that key innovations in this new ceramics movement were made at the Otis Art institute and that its direction was defined by a group of students surrounding the charismatic leader Voulkos. The truth is that the new trend in ceramics was driven by the works that Price, Mason, and Voulkos made in a subsequent, independent phase when they were working as professional artists in Los Angeles, and the goal of Clay''s Tectonic Shift is to correct that misperception. These three artists followed individual paths as they willfully propelled a new use of the medium into the mainstream professional arena, where it was widely recognized and documented. An exhibition of the same name will be on view at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College from January 21 through April 8, 2012, as part of Pacific Standard Time, a collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene."--Books.google.
