Control-Based Operating System Design

release date: Jun 05, 2013
Control-Based Operating System Design
Control-Based Operating System Design describes the application of system- and control-theoretical methods to the design of computer operating system components. It argues that computer operating system components should not be first ''designed'' and then ''endowed with control'', but rather when possible conceived from the outset as controllers, synthesised and assessed in the system-theoretical world of dynamic models, and then realised as control algorithms. Doing so is certainly a significant perspective shift with respect to current practices in operating system design, but the payoff is significant too. In some sense, adopting the suggested attitude means viewing computing systems as cyber-physical ones, where the operating system plays the computational role, the physical elements are the managed resources, and the various (control) functionalities to be realised, interact and co-operate as a network.

Antinuclear and antiphospholipid antibodies versus disease manifestations and clinical outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus

release date: Apr 07, 2020
Antinuclear and antiphospholipid antibodies versus disease manifestations and clinical outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has an exceptionally heterogeneous clinical spectrum, ranging from mild disease limited to skin and joints to severe manifestations with renal disorder, central nervous system disease, severe cytopenias and thromboembolic events. Important clinical challenges include the prediction of disease flares and the identification of individuals that are likely to evolve severe disease with accrual of organ damage and worse prognosis. Autoantibodies, i.e. antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), and interferon alpha (IFN-α) that contribute to formation of immune complexes with nuclear antigens, are hallmarks considered to drive the disease in a vicious circle of antigen exposure, autoantibody production, inflammation and organ damage. There are few good biomarkers to predict severe SLE and organ damage. The aim of this PhD project was thus to increase the knowledge regarding ANA as well as aPL, and other potential biomarkers in relation to clinical features and disease outcomes in SLE. As expected, we found that the homogeneous ANA staining pattern was most common, and that it was associated with the occurrence of the ‘immunological disorder’ criterion. Speckled ANA was the second most common staining pattern, and it was inversely associated with arthritis, the ‘immunological disorder’ criterion and organ damage (Paper I). We also demonstrated that a considerable proportion of the patients lost ANA-positivity over time, whereas consistent staining patterns were most frequent (Paper V). Survival of patients with SLE has improved. Yet, in comparison to the general population, irreversible organ damage and increased mortality remains a critical concern. In Paper II, our cross-sectional analysis showed that more than a quarter of the patients had any aPL isotype (IgG, IgM or IgA class), and 14% were classified with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS). A positive lupus anticoagulant (LA) test and/or IgG aPL tests were associated with most APS-related events and organ damage. Lupus nephritis, tobacco smoking, LA-positivity and the use of statins and/or corticosteroids were strongly associated with damage accrual, while hydroxychloroquine seemed to be protective. IgA aPL was not uncommon (16%) in Swedish cases of SLE, and analysis of IgA aPL may add information among clinically suspected APS-patients testing negative for LA and other aPL isotypes. Despite modern management and tax-funded health care with universal access, almost two thirds of the patients accrued organ damage over time, and the main causes of death were identified as malignancy, infection, and cardiovascular disease. We could confirm well established risk factors for organ damage such as APS, hypertension, and/or the use of corticosteroids, but we also observed that other factors such as pericarditis, haemolytic anaemia, lymphopenia and myositis seems to be of importance in this view (Paper IV). We also demonstrated that levels of the extracellular matrix protein osteopontin (OPN) was correlated with disease activity in patients with recent-onset SLE. In addition, OPN levels reflected global organ damage and were associated with APS and could have potential as a valuable biomarker in SLE (Paper III). Additional studies are warranted to further establish the clinical and mechanistic relevance of ANA seroconversion, OPN, as well as the importance of IgA aPL. Vigilance for malignancies, a restricted use of corticosteroids and prevention of cardiovascular disease and APS events are among modifiable factors to prevent organ damage and premature mortality. This thesis emphasizes the importance of autoantibodies in the pathogenesis, and diagnosis, of SLE. The autoantibody profile can be of great importance for tailored therapy in order to minimize the risk of organ damage accrual, morbidity as well as mortality.

Fushimi Inari

Using Carrots to Bring Peace?

Using Carrots to Bring Peace?
How can peace be brokered between warring sides in conflicts over self-determination and what roles do external third parties play? This book is the first of its kind to thoroughly explore the effectiveness of aid conditionality and other external tools that third parties -- from states and regional organizations to NGOs -- bring to the table in peace negotiations. Surveying the existing academic debate on incentives and peace conditionality, the author first identifies the gaps between theory and the needs of third party mediators and facilitators. Analysing in depth the negotiation processes in Sri Lanka (Eelam), Indonesia (Aceh), and the Philippines (Mindanao) as case studies, policy tools likely to be most effective are then identified and policy recommendations developed. This book is an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and practitioners alike.

UML @ Classroom

release date: Feb 21, 2015
UML @ Classroom
This textbook mainly addresses beginners and readers with a basic knowledge of object-oriented programming languages like Java or C#, but with little or no modeling or software engineering experience – thus reflecting the majority of students in introductory courses at universities. Using UML, it introduces basic modeling concepts in a highly precise manner, while refraining from the interpretation of rare special cases. After a brief explanation of why modeling is an indispensable part of software development, the authors introduce the individual diagram types of UML (the class and object diagram, the sequence diagram, the state machine diagram, the activity diagram, and the use case diagram), as well as their interrelationships, in a step-by-step manner. The topics covered include not only the syntax and the semantics of the individual language elements, but also pragmatic aspects, i.e., how to use them wisely at various stages in the software development process. To this end, the work is complemented with examples that were carefully selected for their educational and illustrative value. Overall, the book provides a solid foundation and deeper understanding of the most important object-oriented modeling concepts and their application in software development. An additional website offers a complete set of slides to aid in teaching the contents of the book, exercises and further e-learning material.

The Poetics and Politics of Alzheimer’s Disease Life-Writing

release date: Jun 07, 2017
The Poetics and Politics of Alzheimer’s Disease Life-Writing
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This is the first book-length exploration of the thoughts and experiences expressed by dementia patients in published narratives over the last thirty years. It contrasts third-person caregiver and first-person patient accounts from different languages and a range of media, focusing on the poetical and political questions these narratives raise: what images do narrators appropriate; what narrative plot do they adapt; and how do they draw on established strategies of life-writing. It also analyses how these accounts engage with the culturally dominant Alzheimer’s narrative that centres on dependence and vulnerability, and addresses how they relate to discourses of gender and aging. Linking literary scholarship to the medico-scientific understanding of dementia as a neurodegenerative condition, this book argues that, first, patients’ articulations must be made central to dementia discourse; and second, committed alleviation of caregiver burden through social support systems and altered healthcare policies requires significantly altered views about aging, dementia, and Alzheimer’s patients.

Theological Perspectives on Reimagining Friendship and Disability

release date: Jul 14, 2023
Theological Perspectives on Reimagining Friendship and Disability
This book rethinks the anthropology of friendship from the perspective of theology and disability, and suggests the respect for human dignity and the person ́s vulnerability as the criterion in reconsidering such an anthropology. The reality of disability is not only the reality of being in the world, but also concerns the concept of the meaning of otherness and being created as an image of God. The constructive critique that the emergence of disability as a human condition posits to theo-anthropological and ethical concepts is the quest of the renewal of theo-anthropological and ethical knowledge on the meaning of disability, otherness and friendship. The theological and anthropological entities, such as disability and friendship, are interconnected in a sense that the meaning of the one needs to be explained in the light of the other, and vice versa. The renewal of certain anthropological categories in such regard is a search for a deeper understanding of humanity, not apart from, but in light of, the presence of disability. The book examines the anthropological and theological systems regarding the theme of friendship and disability.

Capital Markets, COVID-19 and Policy Measures

release date: Feb 12, 2021
Capital Markets, COVID-19 and Policy Measures
The COVID-19 pandemic and associated policy responses triggered a historically large wave of capital reallocation between markets and asset classes. Using high-frequency country-level data, this paper examines if and how the number of COVID cases, the stringency of the lockdown, and the fiscal and monetary policy response determined the dynamics of portfolio flows. Despite more dominant global factors, we find that these domestic factors played an important role, particularly for emerging markets and bond flows, contributing to a global wave of reallocation to safer asset classes. Our results indicate that rising domestic COVID cases had a strong positive effect on portfolio flows, which responded to an increase in financing needs in affected economies. Lockdown and fiscal policy measures also led to an increase in portfolio flows; however, evidence from the CDS market suggests that the increase in flows was dominated by supply forces, reflecting investors'' preference for stronger policy responses. In contrast, we find that interest rate cuts led to a decline in portfolio flows as investors searched for higher yield. Finally, we show that COVID policy responses also affected countries'' exposure to the global shock and that pre-COVID macroeconomic conditions, such as lower sovereign risk and higher trade openness, contributed to larger flows during the COVID episode.

Disability and Child Sexual Abuse

release date: Nov 15, 2009
Disability and Child Sexual Abuse
Disability and Child Sexual Abuse examines the ways in which society marginalises, institutionalises and places disabled children in situations of unacceptable risk, and how – as evidenced in the survivors'' narratives – patterns of service delivery can contribute to the problem. Based on the accounts of seven disabled individuals who were sexually abused in childhood, the book highlights a wide range of pertinent issues. Through case vignettes and empirical research, the authors ask practitioners to scrutinise their current professional practice, exploring participants'' experiences of hospitalisation, education systems and local authorities. They consider the issue of who abuses and why, and highlight issues relating to the complexities involved in revisiting past experiences and confronting unwarranted and unwanted feelings of responsibility. The difficulty of recounting the abuse narrative is also examined within the research context. This book will be relevant for professionals and students in the social, health and education services, such as social workers, teachers and counsellors. It will also offer insights for those seeking a less disablist society, including disabled people themselves.

The Politics of Humour

The Politics of Humour
The period between the First World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall is often characterized as the age of extremes—while this era witnessed unprecedented violence and loss of human life, it also saw a surge in humorous entertainment in both democratic and authoritarian societies. The Politics of Humour examines how works such as satirical magazines and comedy films were used both to reaffirm group identity and to exclude those who did not belong. The essays in this collection analyse the political and social context of comedy in Europe and the United States, exploring topics ranging from the shifting targets of ethnic jokes to the incorporation of humour into wartime broadcasting and the uses of satire as a means of resistance. Comedy continues to define the nature of group membership today, and The Politics of Humour offers an intriguing look at how entertainment helped everyday people make sense of the turmoil of the twentieth century.

Energy Access, Poverty, and Development

Energy Access, Poverty, and Development
This book showcases how small-scale renewable energy technologies such as solar panels, cookstoves, biogas digesters, microhydro units, and wind turbines are helping Asia respond to a daunting set of energy governance challenges. Using extensive original research this book offers a compendium of the most interesting renewable energy case studies over the last ten years from one of the most diverse regions in the world. Through an in-depth exploration of case studies in Bangladesh, China, India, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka, the authors highlight the applicability of different approaches and technologies and illuminates how household and commercial innovations occur (or fail to occur) within particular energy governance regimes. It also, uniquely, explores successful case studies alongside failures or "worst practice" examples that are often just as revealing as those that met their targets. Based on these successes and failures, the book presents twelve salient lessons for policymakers and practitioners wishing to expand energy access and raise standards of living in some of the world''s poorest communities. It also develops an innovative framework consisting of 42 distinct factors that explain why some energy development interventions accomplish all of their goals while others languish to achieve any.

Migration Landing Spaces

Migration Landing Spaces
This book looks at migrant landing spaces, exploring the processes and infrastructures which people encounter as they navigate urban spaces along the central Mediterranean route. The book argues that there remains a theoretical and practical difficulty in grasping the complexity of migrant arrivals. Migrants are often unsure whether they will stay or leave, their mobility is uncertain. Despite this, they face rigid binaries and categories within administrative policy and planning which tries to pin them down as either permanent or temporary. Drawing on extensive original research in southern Italy, this book suggests that we should instead think of ‘landing spaces’: parts of the city that work as infrastructures for landing, that allow for an open and dynamic use of the urban space and provide opportunities for encounter and information exchange as migrants consider their next steps. Combining an ethnographic gaze with insights from urban planning, architecture, geography, social sciences and migration studies, this book invites us to look closer at the interactions between people, practices and places as migrants land in Europe.

Their book is both informative and autobiographical-and it is a revelation.I can promise that [reading] this book will be an experience that could change the reader''s life."-Ervin Laszlo In the world of business and finance, everything revolves around the economy. But what does the economy revolve around? Journalist Martina Köhler and Swiss entrepreneur Hans Jecklin try to answer this question with the insightful A New Spirit in Business. Whereas several books have been written on companies'' social responsibility, stakeholder strategy, and corporate ethics, Köhler and Jecklin tackle it from a different perspective-a human one. By elaborating on the essential features of an integral economy and how to deal with abundance in life, Köhler and Jecklin show how the spiritual and economic sides of business complement each other. Using examples from everyday life, dialogues, and exercises, the relationship between money and spirit takes an innovative shape.

Using Risk Analysis for Flood Protection Assessment

release date: Feb 07, 2017
Using Risk Analysis for Flood Protection Assessment
This book explores the benefits of using risk analysis techniques in the evaluation of flood protection structures, and examines the results of the environmental impact assessment for selected planned flood protection projects. The objective of the book is to propose a methodology for environmental impact assessment in water management. In more detail, flood mitigation measures are investigated with the aim of selecting the best option for the approval process. This methodology is intended to streamline the process of environmental impact assessment for structures in the field of the water management. The book’s environmental impact assessment system for water management structures analyzes the respective risks for different options. The results are intended to support the selection of future projects that pose minimum risks to the environment. Comparison of alternatives and designation of the optimal variant are implemented on the basis of selected criteria that objectively describe the characteristics of the planned alternatives and their respective impacts on the environment. The proposed Guideline for environmental impact assessment of flood protection objects employs multi-parametric risk analysis, a method intended to not only enhance the transparency and sensitivity of the evaluation process, but also successfully addresses the requirements of environmental impact assessment systems in the European Union. These modifications are intended to improve the outcomes of the environmental impact assessment, but may also be applied to other infrastructure projects. The case study proves that the primary aim – to improve transparency and minimize subjectivity in the environmental impact assessment process specific to flood protection structure projects – is met for the planned project in Kružlov, Slovakia.

Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Clusters

Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Clusters
This book is intended to give an introduction to intermolecular forces from an experimental point of view. Within the last 10 years the interest has turned more and more into an understanding of the weak, but important, int- molecular forces. New experimental techniques have been developed which have helped to gain more insight into this interesting topic. This book is intended as an introduction for graduate students who are familiar with the main concepts of n~olecular spectroscopy. Special emphasis will be laid on the theoretical concepts. After a detailed description of experimental techniques, the results for two prototype systems which have been the subject of several studies in the literature within recent years will be presented. Ar-CO is becoming the most extensively studied van der Waals complex, theoretically and experimentally. Nevertheless, this example shows that even though the theory has greatly improved and has helped us to improve our knowledge of intermolecular forces, even for relatively simple cases the theory car1 still fall short of an accurate description. For a long time (NH3)2 was considered as a prototype for hydrogen bo- ing. However, subsequent experimental and theoretical studies have revealed the mysteries of the obtained spectra and proved that our previous concept of hydrogen bonds was just too naive.

(MMC) . In 1999 the Swedish utility truck manufacturer Volvo entered into an alliance with MMC by acquiring 3.3 percent of the shares. DaimlerChrysler AG – seeking for a Japanese partner in the field of busses and trucks – considers buying Volvo’s outstanding 3.3 percent stake in MMC. The problem at this point is that Volvo has already established a long-term relationship with MMC which is the basis on that future success rests. In the following, I will explain the problems which might arise in the negotiating process between the German-American company DaimlerChrysler AG and the Japanese corporation Mitsubishi. There are various differences between the Western and the Japanese society which have great influence on the negotiating process. The Germans have to pay attention to these differences, for instance, the strong hierarchical system, the group consensus in decision-making and the deference to seniors in Japan. Offending against certain rules of the Japanese society might harm the relationship between the counterparts in a negotiation.
