The Harmful Feature of Generics

release date: Jun 23, 2025
The Harmful Feature of Generics
The Harmful Feature of Generics provides an in-depth investigation into the role of generics in essentialization offering a thorough examination of its roots. Generics, sentences expressing generalizations about categories or their members, are a common means to express stereotypes: we typically say "Philosophers are absent-minded" rather than "Some/Many/Most philosophers are absent-minded". The present book shows that this correlation is no coincidence. As emerged from robust empirical literature, generics seem to foster social essentialism, that is, they lead people to believe that the categories they are about possess an underlying essence. In doing so, generics dangerously contribute to stereotyping. But what enables generics to essentialize? The author untangles this puzzle thanks to an interdisciplinary approach encompassing philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. She draws on Haslanger''s (2011, 2014) hypothesis that generics implicitly convey that the target category and predicated property are strongly connected. Rosola refines this proposal and substantiates it through the linguistic tests for implicatures and presuppositions, concluding that generics convey a generalized and particularized conversational implicatures which form the basis for essentialist beliefs. The cover image was created by Photographer Andy Brown within the project The Image Speaks (2019), organized and funded by The University of Sheffield.

Migration Landing Spaces

release date: Jun 03, 2024
Migration Landing Spaces
This book looks at migrant landing spaces, exploring the processes and infrastructures which people encounter as they navigate urban spaces along the central Mediterranean route. The book argues that there remains a theoretical and practical difficulty in grasping the complexity of migrant arrivals. Migrants are often unsure whether they will stay or leave, their mobility is uncertain. Despite this, they face rigid binaries and categories within administrative policy and planning which tries to pin them down as either permanent or temporary. Drawing on extensive original research in southern Italy, this book suggests that we should instead think of ‘landing spaces’: parts of the city that work as infrastructures for landing, that allow for an open and dynamic use of the urban space and provide opportunities for encounter and information exchange as migrants consider their next steps. Combining an ethnographic gaze with insights from urban planning, architecture, geography, social sciences and migration studies, this book invites us to look closer at the interactions between people, practices and places as migrants land in Europe.

Theological Perspectives on Reimagining Friendship and Disability

release date: Jul 14, 2023
Theological Perspectives on Reimagining Friendship and Disability
This book rethinks the anthropology of friendship from the perspective of theology and disability, and suggests the respect for human dignity and the person ́s vulnerability as the criterion in reconsidering such an anthropology. The reality of disability is not only the reality of being in the world, but also concerns the concept of the meaning of otherness and being created as an image of God. The constructive critique that the emergence of disability as a human condition posits to theo-anthropological and ethical concepts is the quest of the renewal of theo-anthropological and ethical knowledge on the meaning of disability, otherness and friendship. The theological and anthropological entities, such as disability and friendship, are interconnected in a sense that the meaning of the one needs to be explained in the light of the other, and vice versa. The renewal of certain anthropological categories in such regard is a search for a deeper understanding of humanity, not apart from, but in light of, the presence of disability. The book examines the anthropological and theological systems regarding the theme of friendship and disability.

Fashion Forward Visegrad: Sustainable Fashion in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia

release date: Nov 24, 2021
Fashion Forward Visegrad: Sustainable Fashion in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia
Sustainable fashion has gained immense traction in the past decade. While American and Western European initiatives are often credited with being the pioneers of this relatively new segment of the industry, it is important to note that they are not the only ones asking the tough questions, and providing innovative answers on the topic. Eastern Central Europe is full of educators, activists, programs and initiatives that are actively addressing and working with sustainable fashion, yet lack a unified platform on which to collaborate and advance their goals. A cumulative platform was warranted to showcase the diversity of ideas the Visegrad (V4) region has to offer. Based on a 3-day conference that was organized in September 2021 by Fashion Forward, a New York-based not-for-profit think tank, and funded by the prestigious Visegrad Fund, this volume was conceived to present the most pioneering civil society advocacy groups and universities of the region. Representing 8 partner organizations— 4 universities, and each of the V4 nations’ respective Fashion Revolution chapters— conference delegates shared their experience, insights, and knowledge with each other and the public in an accessible, open forum in which active participation and communication were highly valued and encouraged. Following the conference’s format, this volume is divided into three sections: “Sustainability & Accountability,” “Culture & Society,” and “Education & Training.” Interspersed between the partners’ delegates’ essays are “Worlds,” short fictional scenarios that imagine alternative realities around the concept of sustainable dress and fashion. These Worlds were written by delegates in a workshop hosted by Fashion Fictions, a speculative, prototyping fashion project based in the U.K. It is our hope that this publication provides a comprehensive foundation on which to further explore and expand the notion of sustainable fashion in the Visegrad region.

The BBC German Service during the Second World War

release date: Sep 16, 2021
The BBC German Service during the Second World War
This book, part media history and part group biography, tells the story of the BBC’s attempts to reach out to listeners in Nazi Germany at a time when Anglo-German relations were particularly strained. Who were the individuals behind the microphone, whose names could only be mentioned in whispered conversations on the continent? Who wrote the satirical sketches that offered comic relief to housewives struggling to obtain enough food to feed their families? And who made decisions about programme delivery and staffing? Drawing extensively on previously unexamined archival material, The BBC German Service during the Second World War: Broadcasting to the Enemy sheds light on the complex, often difficult working arrangements at the wartime BBC where people from different nationalities and socio-political backgrounds collaborated and argued about the delivery of an effective propaganda programme that would assist the Allies in defeating the Nazis.

Capital Markets, COVID-19 and Policy Measures

Capital Markets, COVID-19 and Policy Measures
The COVID-19 pandemic and associated policy responses triggered a historically large wave of capital reallocation between markets and asset classes. Using high-frequency country-level data, this paper examines if and how the number of COVID cases, the stringency of the lockdown, and the fiscal and monetary policy response determined the dynamics of portfolio flows. Despite more dominant global factors, we find that these domestic factors played an important role, particularly for emerging markets and bond flows, contributing to a global wave of reallocation to safer asset classes. Our results indicate that rising domestic COVID cases had a strong positive effect on portfolio flows, which responded to an increase in financing needs in affected economies. Lockdown and fiscal policy measures also led to an increase in portfolio flows; however, evidence from the CDS market suggests that the increase in flows was dominated by supply forces, reflecting investors'' preference for stronger policy responses. In contrast, we find that interest rate cuts led to a decline in portfolio flows as investors searched for higher yield. Finally, we show that COVID policy responses also affected countries'' exposure to the global shock and that pre-COVID macroeconomic conditions, such as lower sovereign risk and higher trade openness, contributed to larger flows during the COVID episode.

On Our Own Strength

release date: Dec 31, 2020
On Our Own Strength
On Our Own Strength examines the political activities of the most influential intellectual movement in interwar French-occupied Vietnam. The far-reaching work of the Self-Reliant Literary Group (Tự Lực Văn Đoàn) included applied design, urban reform, fashion, literature, journalism, and cartoons; its work was deeply political in both form and intent. The Group drew upon a wide range of global intellectual currents and practices to build an enlightened public that would one day serve as the basis of a modern Vietnamese nation. Its nationalist vision sought a nonviolent middle path between colonialism and anticolonial struggle, advocating a process of gradual decolonization that ultimately ended in Vietnamese autonomy. This form of cosmopolitan nationalism proved tremendously popular among ordinary Vietnamese and necessarily shaped local politics, influencing the political agenda of even rival groups such as the newly revived Indochinese Communist Party (ICP). On Our Own Strength shows how the Group’s vision framed the ways ICP positioned itself and sought popular support in the years leading up to the August Revolution and beyond. In later years, the party attempted to erase the Group’s early influence on national politics, banning their writings and casting them as little more than bourgeois literary figures. In recovering the Group’s unique response to the world around them, this book bridges the areas of political, cultural, and intellectual history, drawing them together into a rich narrative of Vietnamese nation-building from the bottom-up within a larger global contextu200b. On Our Own Strength offers a dynamic model for the field of Vietnamese studies as it continues to move beyond Cold War political narratives of its most tumultuous period. This book engages broadly with global history, European history, and imperial studies to explore colonialism’s hybrid cultural and political forms. Martina Thucnhi Nguyen examines how the Self-Reliant Literary Group weighed in on everything from women’s fashion and public housing to the major political ideologies of their era, in a unique style that mixed French-inflected ideas with Vietnamese norms and forms. As a deep case study of important figures on the Vietnamese moderate left, On Our Own Strength provides an injection of color and nuance into a history that is often too monochromatic.u200bu200b

The Confucian Transformation of Korea

release date: Oct 26, 2020
The Confucian Transformation of Korea
Legislation to change Korean society along Confucian lines began at the founding of the Chosŏn dynasty in 1392 and had apparently achieved its purpose by the mid seventeenth century. Until this important new study, however, the nature of Koryŏ society, the stresses induced by the new legislation, and society’s resistance to the Neo-Confucian changes imposed by the Chosŏn elite have remained largely unexplored. To explain which aspects of life in Koryŏ came under attack and why, Martina Deuchler draws on social anthropology to examine ancestor worship, mourning, inheritance, marriage, the position of women, and the formation of descent groups. To examine how Neo-Confucian ideology could become an effective instrument for altering basic aspects of Koryŏ life, she traces shifts in political and social power as well as the cumulative effect of changes over time. What emerges is a subtle analysis of Chosŏn Korean social and ideological history.

Antinuclear and antiphospholipid antibodies versus disease manifestations and clinical outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus

release date: Apr 07, 2020
Antinuclear and antiphospholipid antibodies versus disease manifestations and clinical outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has an exceptionally heterogeneous clinical spectrum, ranging from mild disease limited to skin and joints to severe manifestations with renal disorder, central nervous system disease, severe cytopenias and thromboembolic events. Important clinical challenges include the prediction of disease flares and the identification of individuals that are likely to evolve severe disease with accrual of organ damage and worse prognosis. Autoantibodies, i.e. antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), and interferon alpha (IFN-α) that contribute to formation of immune complexes with nuclear antigens, are hallmarks considered to drive the disease in a vicious circle of antigen exposure, autoantibody production, inflammation and organ damage. There are few good biomarkers to predict severe SLE and organ damage. The aim of this PhD project was thus to increase the knowledge regarding ANA as well as aPL, and other potential biomarkers in relation to clinical features and disease outcomes in SLE. As expected, we found that the homogeneous ANA staining pattern was most common, and that it was associated with the occurrence of the ‘immunological disorder’ criterion. Speckled ANA was the second most common staining pattern, and it was inversely associated with arthritis, the ‘immunological disorder’ criterion and organ damage (Paper I). We also demonstrated that a considerable proportion of the patients lost ANA-positivity over time, whereas consistent staining patterns were most frequent (Paper V). Survival of patients with SLE has improved. Yet, in comparison to the general population, irreversible organ damage and increased mortality remains a critical concern. In Paper II, our cross-sectional analysis showed that more than a quarter of the patients had any aPL isotype (IgG, IgM or IgA class), and 14% were classified with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS). A positive lupus anticoagulant (LA) test and/or IgG aPL tests were associated with most APS-related events and organ damage. Lupus nephritis, tobacco smoking, LA-positivity and the use of statins and/or corticosteroids were strongly associated with damage accrual, while hydroxychloroquine seemed to be protective. IgA aPL was not uncommon (16%) in Swedish cases of SLE, and analysis of IgA aPL may add information among clinically suspected APS-patients testing negative for LA and other aPL isotypes. Despite modern management and tax-funded health care with universal access, almost two thirds of the patients accrued organ damage over time, and the main causes of death were identified as malignancy, infection, and cardiovascular disease. We could confirm well established risk factors for organ damage such as APS, hypertension, and/or the use of corticosteroids, but we also observed that other factors such as pericarditis, haemolytic anaemia, lymphopenia and myositis seems to be of importance in this view (Paper IV). We also demonstrated that levels of the extracellular matrix protein osteopontin (OPN) was correlated with disease activity in patients with recent-onset SLE. In addition, OPN levels reflected global organ damage and were associated with APS and could have potential as a valuable biomarker in SLE (Paper III). Additional studies are warranted to further establish the clinical and mechanistic relevance of ANA seroconversion, OPN, as well as the importance of IgA aPL. Vigilance for malignancies, a restricted use of corticosteroids and prevention of cardiovascular disease and APS events are among modifiable factors to prevent organ damage and premature mortality. This thesis emphasizes the importance of autoantibodies in the pathogenesis, and diagnosis, of SLE. The autoantibody profile can be of great importance for tailored therapy in order to minimize the risk of organ damage accrual, morbidity as well as mortality.

Pictorial Memoir: Korea Fifty Years Ago
Pictorial Memoir contains a small selection from over three thousand photographs Martina Deuchler took when she lived in Korea for a couple of years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. These pictures record her early impressions of Korea, a country that was practically unknown in the West at that time.

Living under the Evil Pope
In Living under the Evil Pope, Martina Mampieri presents the Hebrew Chronicle of Pope Paul IV, written in the second half of the sixteenth century by the Italian Jewish moneylender Benjamin Neḥemiah ben Elnathan (alias Guglielmo di Diodato) from Civitanova Marche. The text remained in manuscript for about four centuries until the Galician scholar Isaiah Sonne (1887-1960) published a Hebrew annotated edition of the chronicle in the 1930s. This remarkable source offers an account of the events of the Papal States during Paul IV’s pontificate (1555-59). Making use of broad archival materials, Martina Mampieri reflects on the nature of this work, its historical background, and contents, providing a revised edition of the Hebrew text as well as the first unabridged English translation and commentary. Martina Mampieri has been granted a special mention of excellence in the Alberigo Award 2021 by the European Academy of Religion and Fondazione per le Scienze Religiose (https://www.europeanacademyofreligion.org/alberigo-award) and a special mention of excellence in the Pirovano Award 2022 by the Istituto Luigi Sturzo in Rome (http://sturzo.it/blog/2023/06/12/lassegnazione-del-premio-desiderio-pirovano-2022/). "Martina Mampieri provides scholars with a source of great interest, which helps better understand the complex period following the election of Pope Paul IV Carafa from a Jewish perspective. This is undoubtedly an important book that contributes to the advancement of our knowledge regarding that historical moment." -Alessandra Veronese, AJS Review 45/1 (2021) "This valuable source is now available to the many – the many including, and this is no small thing, those who study the history of historical writing for itself as that writing began emerging from the shadows at just this time. Jews and Muslims in Contemporary Spain

Jews and Muslims in Contemporary Spain
The book analyzes the place of religious difference in late modernity through a study of the role played by Jews and Muslims in the construction of contemporary Spanish national identity. The focus is on the transition from an exclusive, homogeneous sense of collective Self toward a more pluralistic, open and tolerant one in an European context. This process is approached from different dimensions. At the national level, it follows the changes in nationalist historiography, the education system and the public debates on national identity. At the international level, it tackles the problem from the perspective of Spanish foreign policy towards Israel and the Arab-Muslim states in a changing global context. From the social-communicational point of view, the emphasis is on the construction of the Self–Other dichotomy (with Jewish and Muslim others) as reflected in the three leading Spanish newspapers.

Crossborder Care

release date: Sep 25, 2018
Crossborder Care
This book analyses the circular migration of care workers in Central Europe using the example of Slovak carers in 24-hour care provision for the elderly in Austria. Challenging analyses that focus primarily on care drain and care regimes, Bahna and Sekulová supplement quantitative methodology with qualitative fieldwork to demonstrate the importance of the sending country’s economic context. The authors discuss the dynamics of economic differences between Austria and its post-communist neighbors as preconditions of the crossborder care provision, bridging analyses of policy and legal frameworks with approaches from labor migration study. Even as they scrutinize the relevance of care drain-based analyses, Bahna and Sekulová bring to the fore the interplay of economic differences, social policies, gender and migration regimes with geographic proximity to study long-term impacts of care work, including an analysis of employment after care work.

How To Set Up An Information Platform For Migrants
Transnational multilingual information platform Danube Compass, part of the DRIM project (Danube Region Information Platform for Economic Integration of Migrants) financed by the European Union''s Danube Transnational Programme, was created with the aim to improve access to information for migrants in eight countries along the Danube river. What we have learned in the process is what this handbook is all about. Its aim is to support the creation of similar platforms in other regions and is intended for organizations and institutions involved in the integration of newly arrived migrants. It should be helpful for anyone who is thinking of gathering focused information about arriving, working and living in another country. It provides hands-on checklists and ideas about how to implement one’s own platform for supporting migrants’ integration on local or national level. / Transnacionalna informacijska platforma Danube Compass, del projekta DRIM (Danube Region Information Platform for Economic Integration of Migrants), ki je financiran s strani EU in Transnacionalnega programa Podonavje, je bila oblikovana s ciljem izboljšati dostop do informacij za migrante v osmih državah Podonavja. Neuroradiology - Expect the Unexpected

release date: May 28, 2018
Neuroradiology - Expect the Unexpected
This book presents a selection of unusual neuroradiology cases, each documented with a short medical history, CT and MRI images, and one page with clinical features and radiological findings. A total of 25 rare and peculiar cases were selected from the authors’ clinical experience. Over time, the authors witnessed several of these cases – for which there is little or no information in the international literature – being misinterpreted, especially by residents, general radiologists who occasionally have to deal with neuroradiology cases, or young neuroradiologists. Written by experienced practitioners, this atlas, with its thoroughly documented collection of rare neuroradiological cases, represents a valuable clinical tool for young radiologists and will encourage them to “think outside the box” and successfully find the correct diagnosis.
