The classic collection of Dr. King’s sermons that fuse his Christian teachings with his radical ideas of love and nonviolence as a means to combat hate and oppression. As Martin Luther King, Jr., prepared for the Birmingham campaign in early 1963, he drafted the final sermons for Strength to Love, a volume of his most well known homilies. King had begun working on the sermons during a fortnight in jail in July 1962. While behind bars, he spent uninterrupted time preparing the drafts for works such as “Loving Your Enemies” and “Shattered Dreams,” and he continued to edit the volume after his release. Collectively they present King’s fusion of Christian teachings and social consciousness and promote his prescient vision of love as a social and political force for change.

On the Jews & Their Lies

On the Jews & Their Lies
On the Jews & Their Lies is one of the most controversial works by Protestant reformer, Martin Luther. In one of the most notorious chapters in the book, Luther urges the German people to “raze and destroy [the Jews’] houses," and it is for such statements that the book is best known. But the book also presents some theological arguments against the Judaism (i.e. the Jew’s belief in the circumcision, their classification of themselves as the “Chosen People,” and the Jews’ denial of Christ as the Messiah). This annotated edition of Martin Luther’s On the Jews & Their Lies provides readers with a more thorough understanding of one of the most controversial works of the Father of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther.

A Treatise on Good Works

release date: Apr 20, 2017
A Treatise on Good Works
Martin Luther was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, monk and a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. Luther came to reject several teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. He strongly disputed the Catholic view on indulgences as he understood it to be, that freedom from God''s punishment for sin could be purchased with money. Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences in his Ninety-five Theses of 1517. His refusal to renounce all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the Pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Emperor.

Concerning Christian Liberty; with Letter of Martin Luther to Pope Leo X

release date: Nov 19, 2019
Concerning Christian Liberty; with Letter of Martin Luther to Pope Leo X
In "Concerning Christian Liberty," Martin Luther articulates a revolutionary doctrine that centers around the transformative power of faith and individual liberty in the Christian experience. Written in a clear yet profound style, this seminal work argues that true freedom comes not from the observance of law but from a living faith in Christ. Luther''s heartfelt letters to Pope Leo X provide a compelling historical context, showcasing the tension between reformative zeal and ecclesiastical authority during the early 16th century, a period marked by the burgeoning Reformation movement. Martin Luther, a pivotal figure in Western religious thought, was motivated by deep spiritual turmoil and a desire for reform within the Catholic Church. His experiences, including the struggle with the doctrine of justification by faith, left an indelible mark on his work. This book serves not only as a theological manifesto but also as an invocation for the laity to reclaim their spiritual autonomy amidst a corrupt system. This text is a must-read for anyone interested in the roots of Protestantism, the nature of Christian liberty, or the intricacies of faith challenges. Luther''s insights remain relevant, making this work essential for scholars, theologians, and lay readers eager to explore the implications of spiritual freedom.

Stride Toward Freedom

Stride Toward Freedom
MLK’s classic account of the first successful large-scale act of nonviolent resistance in America: the Montgomery bus boycott. A young Dr. King wrote Stride Toward Freedom just 2 years after the successful completion of the boycott. Throughout, he demonstrates how activism and leadership can come from any experience at any age. Comprehensive and intimate, Stride Toward Freedom emphasizes the collective nature of the movement and includes King’s experiences learning from other activists working on the boycott, including Mrs. Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin. It traces the phenomenal journey of a community and shows how the 28-year-old Dr. King, with his conviction for equality and nonviolence, helped transform the nation and the world.

Why We Can't Wait

release date: Jan 11, 2011
Why We Can't Wait
Dr. King’s best-selling account of the civil rights movement in Birmingham during the spring and summer of 1963 On April 16, 1963, as the violent events of the Birmingham campaign unfolded in the city’s streets, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., composed a letter from his prison cell in response to local religious leaders’ criticism of the campaign. The resulting piece of extraordinary protest writing, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” was widely circulated and published in numerous periodicals. After the conclusion of the campaign and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, King further developed the ideas introduced in the letter in Why We Can’t Wait, which tells the story of African American activism in the spring and summer of 1963. During this time, Birmingham, Alabama, was perhaps the most racially segregated city in the United States, but the campaign launched by King, Fred Shuttlesworth, and others demonstrated to the world the power of nonviolent direct action. Often applauded as King’s most incisive and eloquent book, Why We Can’t Wait recounts the Birmingham campaign in vivid detail, while underscoring why 1963 was such a crucial year for the civil rights movement. Disappointed by the slow pace of school desegregation and civil rights legislation, King observed that by 1963—during which the country celebrated the one-hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation—Asia and Africa were “moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence but we still creep at a horse-and-buggy pace.” King examines the history of the civil rights struggle, noting tasks that future generations must accomplish to bring about full equality, and asserts that African Americans have already waited over three centuries for civil rights and that it is time to be proactive: “For years now, I have heard the word ‘Wait!’ It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This ‘Wait’ has almost always meant ‘Never.’ We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that ‘justice too long delayed is justice denied.’”

Disputation on the Power of Indulgences

release date: Nov 16, 2023
Disputation on the Power of Indulgences
In "Disputation on the Power of Indulgences," commonly known as the Ninety-Five Theses, Martin Luther presents a scathing critique of the Roman Catholic Church''s practice of granting indulgences, which he argues undermines true repentance and places financial concerns over spiritual salvation. Written in a clear and accessible style, the text is notable for its direct engagement with the theological arguments of the time, situated within the context of burgeoning Renaissance humanism and the call for ecclesiastical reform. Luther''Äôs theses are structured as propositions intended for scholarly debate, illustrating his commitment to academic rigor while challenging prevailing dogmas that he deemed corrupt. Martin Luther, a German monk and theologian, emerged as a pivotal figure in the Protestant Reformation, motivated by profound spiritual convictions and personal experiences with the Church''s practices. His background in scholastic philosophy and his own struggles with the concept of salvation deeply informed his theological outlook. Luther''s ecclesiastical vocation and moral outrage at the commercialization of faith propelled him to articulate a new perspective that would resonate across Europe and catalyze profound religious transformation. Readers are encouraged to engage with "Disputation on the Power of Indulgences," as it offers not only a foundational text for understanding the Reformation but also invites reflection on contemporary issues of faith, authority, and the nature of forgiveness. This book is essential for anyone interested in the intersections of theology, history, and social change.

The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Volume II
Martin Luther King, Jr.''s ideas—his call for racial equality, his faith in the ultimate triumph of justice, his insistence on the power of nonviolence to bring about a major transformation of American society—are as vital and timely as ever. The wealth of his writings, both published and unpublished, are now preserved in this authoritative, chronologically arranged, multi-volume edition. Volume Two begins with King''s doctoral work at Boston University and ends with his first year as pastor of the historic Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. It includes papers from his graduate courses and a fully annotated text of his dissertation. There is correspondence with people King knew in his years prior to graduate school and a transcription of the first known recording of a King sermon. We learn, too, that Boston was where King met his future wife, Coretta Scott. Accepting the call to serve Dexter, the young King followed the church''s tradition of socially active pastors by becoming involved in voter registration and other social justice issues. In Montgomery he completed his doctoral work, and he and Coretta Scott began their marriage. The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. represents a testament to a man whose life and teaching have had a profound influence, not only on Americans, but on people of all nations. The Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project at Stanford University was established by the Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. in 1984.
