This is Mark Twain''s first novel about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and it has become one of the world''s best-loved books. "Most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred," he tells us. The Mark Twain Library edition contains the only text since the first edition (1876) to be based directly on the author''s manuscript and to include all of the "200 rattling pictures'' Mark Twain commissioned from one of his favorite illustrators, True W. Williams. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain: Annotated

release date: Nov 16, 2020
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain: Annotated
The book''s narrator is Huckleberry Finn, a youngster whose artless vernacular speech is admirably adapted to detailed and poetic descriptions of scenes, vivid representations of characters, and narrative renditions that are both broadly comic and subtly ironic.Huck runs away from his abusive father and, with his companion, the runaway slave Jim, makes a long and frequently interrupted voyage down the Mississippi River on a raft. During the journey Huck encounters a variety of characters and types in whom the book memorably portrays almost every class living on or along the river. As a result of these experiences, Huck overcomes conventional racial prejudices and learns to respect and love Jim. The book''s pages are dotted with idyllic descriptions of the great river and the surrounding forests, and Huck''s good nature and unconscious humour permeate the whole. But a thread that runs through adventure after adventure is that of human cruelty, which shows itself both in the acts of individuals and in their unthinking acceptance of such institutions as slavery. The natural goodness of Huck is continually contrasted with the effects of a corrupt society.Together with Twain''s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), Adventures of Huckleberry Finn changed the course of children''s literature in the United States as well as of American literature generally, presenting the first deeply felt portrayal of boyhood. It is a classic of American realism both for this portrayal and for Twain''s depiction of the pre-Civil War South, especially through his use of dialect. This realism was the source of controversy that developed concerning the book in the late 20th century. Despite Huck''s friendship with Jim, the book was felt to be racist by some who considered the language offensive. Nevertheless, the publication in 2011 of a bowdlerized version of the novel generated debate and was considered by many to be every bit as unacceptable as the original.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated Tom Sawyer, Detective by Mark Twain Tom Sawyer, Detective is a novel by Mark Twain. It is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and a prequel to Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894). Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder in this burlesque of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn. In 1909, Danish schoolmaster Valdemar Thoresen claimed, in an article in the magazine Maaneds, that the plot of the book had been plagiarized from Steen Blicher''s story The Vicar of Weilby. Blicher''s work had been translated into German, but not into English, and Twain''s secretary wrote Mr. Thoresen a letter, stating, "Mr. Clemens is not familiar with Danish and does not read German fluently, and has not read the book you mention, nor any translation or adaptation of it that he is aware of. The matter constituting ''Tom Sawyer, Detective,'' is original with Mr. Clemens, who has never been consciously a plagiarist." In fact, if the story were taken from any tale, it would actually be from a real one-in an introductory passage, Twain notes. "Strange as the incidents of this story are, they are not inventions, but facts-even to the public confession of the accused. I take them from an old-time Swedish criminal trial, change the actors, and transfer the scenes to America. I have added some details, but only a couple of them are important ones."

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain the New Fullu Annotated Edition
First published in 1884, Mark Twain''s "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a masterpiece of world literature. Narrated by Huck himself in his artless vernacular, it tells of his voyage down the Mississippi with a runaway slave named Jim. As the two journey downstream on a raft, Huck''s vivid descriptions capture the sights, smells, sounds, and rhythms of life on the great river. As they encounter traveling actors, con men, lynch mobs, thieves, and Southern gentility, his shrewd comments reveal the dark side of human nature. By the end of the story, Huck has learned about the dignity and worth of human life and Twain has exposed the moral blindness of the "respectable" slave-holding society in which he lives. Huckleberry Finn was Twain''s greatest creation.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain: Illustrated Edition
An imaginative and mischievous boy named Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother, Sid, in the Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, Missouri. After playing hooky from school on Friday and dirtying his clothes in a fight, Tom is made to whitewash the fence as punishment on Saturday. At first, Tom is disappointed by having to forfeit his day off. However, he soon cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He trades these treasures for tickets given out in Sunday school for memorizing Bible verses and uses the tickets to claim a Bible as a prize. He loses much of his glory, however, when, in response to a question to show off his knowledge, he incorrectly answers that the first two disciples were David and Goliath. Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get "engaged" to him. Their romance collapses when she learns that Tom has been "engaged" before--to a girl named Amy Lawrence. Shortly after being shunned by Becky, Tom accompanies Huckleberry Finn, the son of the town drunk, to the graveyard at night to try out a "cure" for warts. At the graveyard, they witness the murder of young Dr. Robinson by the Native-American "half-breed" Injun Joe. Scared, Tom and Huck run away and swear a blood oath not to tell anyone what they have seen. Injun Joe blames his companion, Muff Potter, a hapless drunk, for the crime. Potter is wrongfully arrested, and Tom''s anxiety and guilt begin to grow.
