release date: Jan 01, 2008
What Does this Tell Us?
"This book follows on from the highly popular ''Interacting With Statistics'', by looking at the various sources and methods available to social researchers. The book is illustrated with some interesting and informative examples of the various methods, together with a critique on how those methods have been used or illustrated by some researchers. The book also looks as how the role of social research is itself, subject to social trends, over and above the social problems it seeks to address." "The book also includes a research paper, written by the author, examining the press'' reporting of legal cases (using the Jeffrey Archer perjury trial), by way of an evaluation of this source for legal and social scholars alike."--BOOK JACKET.

Henry the Explorer

release date: Sep 19, 2022
Henry the Explorer
For more than fifty years families have enjoyed reading aloud the adventures of a young boy, Henry, and his dog Angus. On the night of the blizzard Henry and Laird Angus McAngus (Angus for short) read an exciting book about exploring. And the next morning Henry assembled his equipment for the trip: lunch and flags for claiming all that he planned to discover. "Don''t be late coming home," said Henry''s mother. "All right-if a bear doesn''t catch us," said Henry. Exploring is hard work. It makes one hungry. It can be a little alarming if one does seem to see a bear. And sometimes, although explorers do not get lost, they are not quite sure which way to go. All of which makes exploring what it is and makes Henry''s exploring worth reading about.

IBM MQ V8 Features and Enhancements

release date: Jan 01, 2014
IBM MQ V8 Features and Enhancements
The power of IBM® MQ is its flexibility combined with reliability, scalability, and security. This flexibility provides a large number of design and implementation choices. Making informed decisions from this range of choices can simplify the development of applications and the administration of an MQ messaging infrastructure. Applications that access such an infrastructure can be developed using a wide range of programming paradigms and languages. These applications can run within a substantial array of software and hardware environments. Customers can use IBM MQ to integrate and extend the capabilities of existing and varied infrastructures in the information technology (IT) system of a business. IBM MQ V8.0 was released in June 2014. Before that release, the product name was IBM WebSphere® MQ. This IBM Redbooks® publication covers the core enhancements made in IBM MQ V8 and the concepts that must be understood. A broad understanding of the product features is key to making informed design and implementation choices for both the infrastructure and the applications that access it. Details of new areas of function for IBM MQ are introduced throughout this book, such as the changes to security, publish/subscribe clusters, and IBM System z exploitation. This book is for individuals and organizations who make informed decisions about design and applications before implementing an IBM MQ infrastructure or begin development of an IBM MQ application.

Genetic Data and the Law

release date: May 14, 2014
Genetic Data and the Law
Research using genetic data raises various concerns relating to privacy protection. Many of these concerns can also apply to research that uses other personal data, but not with the same implications for failure. The norms of exclusivity associated with a private life go beyond the current legal concept of personal data to include genetic data that relates to multiple identifiable individuals simultaneously and anonymous data that could be associated with any number of individuals in different, but reasonably foreseeable, contexts. It is the possibilities and implications of association that are significant, and these possibilities can only be assessed if one considers the interpretive potential of data. They are missed if one fixates upon its interpretive pedigree or misunderstands the meaning and significance of identification. This book demonstrates how the public interest in research using genetic data might be reconciled with the public interest in proper privacy protection.
