Slag

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Slag
?Poignant poems about moments of grace, light beaming through darkness, and beauty found in unexpected places. Sullivan employs a consistently investigative approach that immediately draws readers in. His curiosity and humility are disarming, and readers will willingly follow his path of discovery, without fear of getting lost, becoming overpowered, or feeling emotionally spent. Sullivan''s deftly written poems have a wonderful and appealing balance of emotion and intellect. Lyrical, elegant, and polished, his poetry resonates with distinctive imagery and music. . . . A strong new poetic voice whose poems add a little more light to the world.? ?BooklistThe poems in Slag begin with everyday experiences?a glance at a construction site or the boredom of waiting for a bus?and then use such unpromising events to explore what Mexican poet Octavio Paz once called ?the dark, forgotten miracle of being alive.? Whether meditating on New York?s diamond district or the death of the last person to have known Van Gogh, Mark Sullivan?s lyric consciousness expands from initial points of contact to ever-broadening associations. The result is an evocative, reflective poetry that recognizes in the slow advance of the loris across its Bronx Zoo cage what it means ?to love the world or to fear / it.?Sullivan pays special attention to animals and the natural world, to the visual arts, and to the relentless stimulation of the nation?s largest city, his free verse creating a lucid language where slam dunks and Zeno?s paradoxes coexist, where the stillness of a snail discovered in a package of spinach reveals ?the process that makes the world.??The poetry of Mark Sullivan slows time down, sees the world calmly, clearly, as a whole with a precise and tender attention that strives to do justice to the complex mysteries of existence. In this it is a classical poetry for our time: wise, humane, objective, deeply felt, paying homage to the wonder and sorrow of our world.? ?Louis Asekoff, author of North StarFrom ?Slag? What are stones butthe slowest of clocks, half-lives ticking down every millennium or so, subatomic gearsmeshing like ocean liners

Jonah Sees Ghosts

As the ghosts become more and more aggressive, Jonah withdraws into his dream world, where he is forced to make a stand from the full depths of abandonment and isolation in a last stab at redemption. ''Sullivan writes with beautiful, introspective clarity.'' - Henry Rollins

Telecommunications-transportation-energy Interaction

release date: Jan 01, 1993
Telecommunications-transportation-energy Interaction
The substitution of transportation by telecommunications has long been advocated as an approach that might eventually alleviate the demand placed on transportation facilities and thereby reduce fuel consumption and air pollutant emissions. With increasing penetration of telecommunications in individual homes and businesses, coupled with the widespread availability of computing equipment, facsimile capabilities and the like, there is renewed interest in exploring and encouraging telecommuting arrangements. These include work-at-home schemes and workplace decentralization with satellite work centers, as well as many other nontraditional approaches to structuring workplace activities and worker responsibilities. The aim of this project is to address the travel behavior implications of telecommuting, and determine the potential of telecommuting to improve urban mobility and reduce fuel consumption. The following objectives will be addressed: 1) prepare a synthesis of existing experience with telecommuting from the standpoint of travel behavior and fuel consumption; 2) characterize telecommunications-tripmaking-energy interactions at the individual and household levels, focusing on travel behavior within a dynamic activity-based framework; 3) develop a predictive approach to assess the energy consumption consequences of telecommmuting; and 4) develop recommendations for possible implementation strategies and for future travel and energy demand forecasting.

The Education of an American
Mark Sullivan has stood for years at the top of his profession. Hundreds of thousands of readers have followed his widely syndicated column with avid interest. His fame as a journalist has been, since the publication and enthusiastic reception of the successive volumes of Our Time, at least equaled by his reputation as a historian. And his fascinating book is, too, a kind of history. In it we see the last half century of this country through the eyes of a highly intelligent man, whose chief characteristic seems to have been an intense curiosity about everyone and everything. -- Front book flap.
