In the monotheistic traditions, there are people who report having special experiences that justify their monotheistic beliefs. They see, hear, or otherwise experience directly the one true God, ruler of the universe. In order to understand what is going on in these experiences and how we should respond to reports of these experiences, it is important to understand what religious experiences can and can''t be, what the claim of monotheism entails, and therefore how what reports of such experiences mean, both for the experiencer and for the recipient of the report.

The report investigates the effects of finite amplitude on the diffraction of a spherical N wave by a circular aperture. The investigation was to be carried out in the farfield of the aperture, i.e., where the incident and diffracted signals were not completely resolved. An experiment was done in which an N wave was produced by an electric spark. A condenser microphone received the acoustic signal, and an aperture in a rigid baffle was placed between the spark and the microphone. The preliminary investigations revealed that, in the farfield, absorptions as well as nonlinear distortion is important. A computer algorithm was developed in which the effects of nonlinear distortion and absorption are combined in a stepwise manner. To test the algorithm, it was used to predict the waveform of a propagating N wave. The predicted waveforms agree very favorably with experiment. (Modified author abstract).

Intrastate conflicts, ranging from localized rebellions to civil war, increased linearly from 1946 through 1992 and then dramatically decreased in the post-Cold War era. This rise and fall of subnational conflict closely mirrors the proxy wars fought by or between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the United States. Proxy refers to (g)reat power hostility expressed through client states and describes superpower use of these states to pursue strategic and ideological goals within the confines of nuclear deterrent postures extant during the Cold War.1 This was done in large part to achieve strategic national interests and other political goals without risking nuclear war. In its waning years, the USSR could no longer afford to fund these wars; America ended support to many of these commitments soon after the Cold War ended.2 The United States emerged from the Cold War as the sole superpower in a unipolar international system. However, evidence suggests this unipolarity could soon change as a new bipolar system emerges with China as the next challenger superpower.
