Fractured Covenants

Fractured Covenants
This book is not a tome against pastors, churches, marriage--or men. Rather, it is a clarion call to the Church to be aware of the calculating influence of abusers, and to not take Scripture, as it pertains to marriage and relationships, out of context. It is sounding the alarm bell to awaken the church to, not only the abuse that goes on between married couples in its midst but, often times, its inaction when abused spouses comes to them for help. Will they be believed, or will the situation be lightly brushed off as an exaggeration?

I Knew You Were There: A Stolen Child's Search for Her Irish Mother
Out-of-wedlock pregnancy was a mortal sin in 1950s Ireland, where unwed pregnant girls were confined to notorious mother-baby homes. There, nuns forced the girls to work fourteen-hour days and denied them medication to ease the pain of childbirth. When the babies were born, their mothers returned to working in hopes to take their children home, but the cruel church and Irish government sold the infants to wealthy American and European families. Marie O''Leary Wydra was one of those children. Adopted into her own hellish nightmare at age two, she never gave up hope that one day she would meet her birth mother again. Decades later, with her daughter Megan at her side, Marie set out to find her Irish mother. I Knew You Were There is the story of two daughters: one who always longed to meet her mother, and the other whose love for her mother and Ireland sends them on a journey they never dreamed of.

A Phenomenological Study on Academic Advising

release date: Jan 01, 2017
A Phenomenological Study on Academic Advising
Retention and student graduation rates are a major concern for community colleges nationwide. As student dropout rates continue to climb and graduation figures languish, many studies have been conducted to investigate the causes of student attrition. Numerous reports have found faculty advising to be a contributing factor in student retention, however much of the research has been compiled from the student point of view (Braxton & Mundy, 2002 & McArthur, 2005). Although a connection between student persistence and advising has been established, there is a need for further research from a faculty perspective in order to create a successful program and to improve retention, and ultimately, graduation rates. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore, describe, and understand the academic advising experience of full-time faculty at a community college. The research questions will focus on how community college faculty perceive their role in academic advising and explore their perspectives on the connection between academic advising and student retention. The interpretive/constructivist research paradigm will use qualitative data to describe and understand community college faculty perspectives regarding student retention and academic advising.

Speech Language Impairments in Utah

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Speech Language Impairments in Utah
An unusually high percentage of kindergarten students begin school in Utah with a speech or language impairment. These impairments can affect the academic and social capabilities of these children. Prior research has demonstrated the long term effects language impairments can have upon the life of a child as well. Family stress associated with the difficulty of communication can be compounded when parents are unable to find solutions to help their child. Research and analysis of parent’s awareness of speech milestones and implications upon the life of their child was investigated. The analysis of parental experiences as they sought a referral and speech therapy services revealed a wide range of issues. State policy and programs were investigated to help provide an understanding of their role and impact upon this study group. Utah is in the process of making vital changes in an attempt to address this problem. Additional research will be necessary to ensure these changes will sufficiently meet the needs of families who have children with speech and language impairments.

Food and Identity Politics
This paper addresses an interesting point of intersection between groups of Maya adhering to the traditional syncretic Maya religion and those who have more recently become Protestants, focusing on the change from farming to wage labor and the rise of the individual. This change is the first conversion that may well be "conquering" the native belief systems of this area known for its participation in the Caste War and its legacy of resistance. With this conversion come not only changes in the monetary system but a complete makeover of the religious symbolism of duality, reciprocity and regeneration. With the mandate from Protestant conversionists, the milpa and its associated rituals are being lost, resulting in a potential nutritional deficit for the rural members of its congregation. I will use data from discourse and food to address these changes using references to ethnohistory as compared to ethnography and ongoing fieldwork.
