My world was bleak, silent and empty, until her. Until I met my neighbor, Elisa Jane Adrian. I want her. I need her. The fractured part of me feels whole when she's around. Like the world isn't so dark, isn't so bleak, and so still. I know it's impossible, but when I look at Elisa I swear I can see color, can hear the gentle inhalations of her breath. I know she feels it too, this magic, this desperate desire... I first saw him when I was three. Julian Wright was different than any other guy I'd ever known. He sees the world in a way I know I never will. But he intrigues me. The way he looks at me with his sea green eyes, how he hypnotizes me with his smile. It's dangerous these feelings I have for him. Reckless and stupid. I'm so much older than him, I know better. And I'll fight these desires, no one will ever know how I feel. I'll even pretend to myself that I'm not as hooked on him as he is on me. I'll move away to college, I'll forget him, but that's the thing about the Wright's, they have a way of getting under your skin, into your soul, and no matter the time or distance, once a Wright sets their eyes on you, there's no going back...ever.

Ecological Change in Tanzanian Montane Rainforests

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Ecological Change in Tanzanian Montane Rainforests
ABSTRACT: Deforestation is a major threat to the conservation of global biodiversity, especially within regions that have high numbers of range-restricted species. Species found in tropical forests are typically forest-dependent and strongly tied to the specific environmental conditions associated with intact forest canopies. The Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania are one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots, and is the most important hotspot in terms of density of range restricted species. Conserving the closed-canopy forest in the Eastern Arc is essential for maintaining its function as a biodiversity hotspot for rare species. Within the past 50 years Eastern Arc has lost 25 % of closed forest area, mostly within the lower elevations. Uneven intensity of deforestation on an elevational gradient can impact the conservation of threatened plants that are restricted to lower elevations. Change in elevation, the major environmental gradient in mountain regions of the world, produces a rapid turnover of species. When elevation range is considered, Eastern Arc endemic species have a smaller area of suitable habitat available than if total area of forest in each mountain range is considered, and 80% endemic species deserve to have their level of extinction threat elevated on the IUCN Red List. Conservation efforts in montane hotspots should consider the extent of habitat changes in all elevations and target conservation and restoration efforts across these ecosystems' entire altitudinal ranges. Cardamom has been an important part of diversified livelihood strategies with the humid forests of the East Usambara mountains for 50 years.

Peace Corps to the Right

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Peace Corps to the Right
One conceptual goal of the Peace Corps is to promote world peace and friendship; one practical goal is to provide assistance to developing countries. I examine the duality of the Peace Corps mission to serve as an a-political agency of human development and to promote public diplomacy, as well as consider a third, external goal of United States strategic foreign interests. The aim of this paper is to determine when these goals compete and the conditions under which one goal takes precedence over the others. I investigate whether external factors beyond the stated mission lead to host nations receiving favorable treatment from the Peace Corps, using panel data for six Central American countries over the period 1973-1999. My results indicate a robust positive relationship between factors such as right-leaning government disposition, democratic institutional presence and the amount of Peace Corps activity a host country experiences.

By Her Own Hand

release date: Jan 01, 2008
By Her Own Hand
Explores the intentional methods of self-castration that lead to authorial empowerment. The project relies on the following self-castration formula: the author's recognition of herself as a being defined by lack. This lack refers to the inability to signify within the phallocentric system of language. In addition to this initial recognition, the female author realizes writing for public consumption emulates the process of castration but, nevertheless, initiates the writing process as a way to resituate the origin of castration--placing it in her own hand. The female writer also recognizes her production as feminine and, therefore works to castrate her own femininity in her pursuit to create texts that are liberated from the critical assignation of "feminine productions." Female self-castration is a violent act of displacement. As the author gains empowerment through the writing process, she creates characters that bear the mark of castration. The text opens a field of play in which the author utilizes the page as a way to cut, disfigure, or erase the feminine sexual body. On the authorial level, the feminine writer works through her self-castration process through the process of writing, editing, and publication. Within the text, her characters demonstrate a will toward liberation from authorial productive hegemony by carrying the mark of their creator's castration and by taking on the power the process allocates to the writer.
