Popular Good Will as a Leadership Attribute in the Writings of Isocrates

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Popular Good Will as a Leadership Attribute in the Writings of Isocrates
This case study illustrates the importance of goodwill, if coordinated with an informed view, opinion, or judgment (doxa) and opportune moment (kairos). It examines Isocrates'' concept and use of goodwill (eunoia) in his speeches Nicocles, On the Peace and Antidosis. Students will start by reflecting on the modern concept of emotional intelligence (EI) and the definition of goodwill by Aristotle, then analyze how Isocrates (436-338 BCE) uses goodwill as a precursor of emotional intelligence. They will examine the role of the teacher as an advisor to leaders such as Nicocles, the king of Cyprus, and Timotheus, the Athenian general. Then, they will be asked to discuss the role of Isocrates in advising leaders on the use of goodwill and the configuration of goodwill-judgment-opportune moment. Students will also examine the relation between a teacher, a counselor, a mentor, and a leader, the qualities of a leader, and the challenges posed by winning over the goodwill of a community.

Convolution Functional Linear Regression Model

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Convolution Functional Linear Regression Model
This thesis develops a new set of tools in Functional Data Analysis. A general historical functional linear model called "convolution functional linear model" is developed to handle a stationary response to the recent history of a covariate process. We argue that the dependent variable y[MICRO SIGN]i(t)is continuously related to values of covariate [ksi][MICRO SIGN]iP(w) where w in [t - [delta][MICRO SIGN]p,t] explained by [BETA][MICRO SIGN]p(w). [BETA][MICRO SIGN]p(w) is the coefficient function of the convolution of the independent variable and give a weight to the values of [ksi][MICRO SIGN]iP(w) for the estimation of y[MICRO SIGN]i(t) as w [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] t. The coefficient of the convolution [BETA][MICRO SIGN]p(w) as well as [delta][MICRO SIGN]p are unknown and estimated by least squares and cross-validation methods. In addition, diagnostic methods are also developed with the purpose of estimating the variability of [BETA][MICRO SIGN]p(w), once [delta][MICRO SIGN]p has been estimated, and the effects that each curve sample has over model estimation or solution. In particular, the methodology of the non-overlapping block bootstrapping (NBB) was expanded to provide a solution for the distortion caused by dividing the sample data into blocks of length "l" and resample them with replacement. This method handles the discontinuity caused at the interior points where the blocks ordinarily should be connected in the block bootstrapped sample. In other words, the block bootstrapped sample becomes less rough and maintains the smoothness of the original data. In addition, the block bootstrapped resembles the autocovariance structure of the original data allowing estimating accurate confidence interval for [BETA][MICRO SIGN]p(w). The statistical methods of Cook''s and Mahalanobis distance also were modified with the objective of accounting for the time structure and serial correlation of the data. This was specifically done by restricting the estimation of the covariance using the autocovariance estimates. These two methods allow identifying curve or functional data that are causing a significant effect in the solution and estimates of the model. Finally, the model was used for the estimation of the continuous trajectory of particulate matter given driving behavior variables. Estimates of the parameters and diagnostics for this particular case are provided.

Stop yelling, let go of the guilt, and develop into a calmer, more satisfied parent. Here is a method for reducing parental meltdowns that incorporates evidence-based methods and is insight and tip-rich. The book Parental Shit Loss will make readers feel less ashamed and more empowered to get their act together rather than lose it. Through a "strong combination of humor and reality checks," Maria G. Newell "helps parents disentangle their personal stressors-we all have them-and discover techniques to stay calm even in the most stressful family circumstances."

Fine Specificity of Antigen-specific Immune Responses in Patients with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and Concomitant Sjögren's Syndrome

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Fine Specificity of Antigen-specific Immune Responses in Patients with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and Concomitant Sjögren's Syndrome
Autoantibody profiling by immunofluorescence and molecularly based assays showed that a high proportion of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) have antibodies to Ro-52, a marker of Sjogren''s syndrome (SS). In SS anti-Ro-52 is present in association with anti-Ro-60 and/or anti-La, while in PBC it occurs in isolation. As anti-PDC-E2/Ro-52 is the most prevalent mitochondrial/nuclear double reactivity in PBC, the existence of molecular mimicry and immunological cross-reactivity between the two autoantigens was probed, but found to be absent. Using a systematic B-cell epitope mapping approach, new B-cell PDC-E2 and Ro-52 epitopes were identified, including one immunodominant PDC-E2 determinant, located in the catalytic domain previously considered ''immunologically silent'', which is recognised by anti-PDC-E2/anti-Ro-52 antibody positive PBC cases, but not by patients without double reactivity. No difference in epitopic reactivity to long polypeptidyl and short linear Ro-52 sequences was observed between patients with PBC/SS and those with SS alone, and, within anti-Ro-52 positive PBC patients, between those with or without SS, suggesting that the stimulus responsible for the initiation of anti-Ro-52 antibody responses is the same. -- Cellular immune response to 5 PDC-E2 and 6 Ro-52 peptide pools were identified in patients with PBC. Anti-Ro-52 antibody reactivity did not characterise PBC cases with more severe liver disease or worse outcome, in contrast to previous reports. In conclusion, this Thesis challenges the hitherto held notion that PBC is a disease involving a single B- and T-cell PDC-E2 epitope, and provides information on key epitopic sequences of Ro-52, which require future investigation.

Attitudes of First-year College Students Toward Individuals with Disabilities

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Attitudes of First-year College Students Toward Individuals with Disabilities
Abstract: PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of first-year college students toward people with disabilities and to compare the attitudes of students in majors with direct patient care to those students who were not. SUBJECTS: Participants included 187 students between the ages of 18 and 20 who were entering their first year of college at Springfield College in Springfield, MA. Subjects were excluded from the study if they were less than 18 years of age or if they failed to fully complete the survey packet. METHODS: Subjects were provided with 7 pictures of individuals with physical disabilities. They provided a written response to what they saw in no more than 2 sentences for each. A demographic questionnaire was also completed that included age, sex, race, and level of exposure to disabilities. The response sheet was scored independently by two of the researchers and a total score, ranging between 0 and 7, was given using the Use of Person-First Language Scale (UPFLS). ANALYSIS: Descriptive statistics obtained a demographic profile of the subjects. Males made up 54.5% of the sample population; 45.5% were females. Race/Ethnicity consisted of3.2% African American, 1.6% Asian, 92.5% Caucasian, .5% Hispanic, and 2.1% ''other''. Health Science Majors made up 19.8% of the population and 80.2% were Non Health Science Majors. Of those sampled 51.8% reported being exposed to disability through media, 86.1 % reported having been exposed through a few interactions with people with a disability, 29.9% reported having a mend or a relative with a disability, I person lived with someone with a disability, and I person had a disability. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare usage of person first language between indicated majors. A two way ANOVA was performed to identify an interaction affect between sexes within major. Secondary analysis on data was done using a Mann-Whitney U test to evaluate the difference in use of person first language between males and females. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the use of person first language between Health Science and Non Health Science Majors (Z Score -0.989). The Authors fail to reject the null hypothesis, which stated there would be no difference in the usage of PFL between health science majors and non health science majors. A significant difference was seen in the UPFLS score between males and females (Z Score -3.507). Males had an average score (0- 7) of 2.52, females scored an average of 3.76. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: While no difference was found between health science and non health science majors, the total use of PFL was found to be generally poor. Also, female health science majors demonstrated the highest mean UPFLS score (3.91) and male health science majors had the lowest mean UPFLS Score (2.43). With this in mind, prior research has shown that education and exposure are the two key elements to improving attitudes and the use of PFL. Research has also shown that when health care workers use disabling language they can impair an individual''s rehabilitation potential. By incorporating education and exposure into their curricula, higher learning institutions may produce more prepared, sensitive, and most importantly, effective health care providers.

Analysis of the Implementation of VDC from a Lean Perspective

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Analysis of the Implementation of VDC from a Lean Perspective
VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) models are seen as an important tool in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry. The VDC methods allow stakeholders to integrate and transmit information throughout the project life cycle, in order to meet customer requirements. Furthermore, VDC is seen as a new approach that will help the AEC industry in achieving Lean principles by eliminating waste, reducing costs, improving productivity and creating positive results within the projects. The Lean philosophy can be used as a conceptual framework for the implementation of VDC, because the impacts of VDC can be associated directly with Lean Principles. Despite the importance of VDC, its implementation is based on anecdotes and beliefs from past projects making it difficult for the industry professionals to formalize implementation lines (factors and metrics) and apply them throughout the project. This research aims to analyze the current implementation of VDC from a Lean perspective. Our analysis includes studies - in the form of surveys, interviews, case studies, literature reviews and implementation guides- that have been conducted in order to assess the implementation and impact of VDC in the AEC industry. The results highlight the importance of the VDC implementation (benefits and obstacles), the lack of tools to identify strategies for successful implementation and the connection between VDC and the lean philosophy.
