An unprecedented analysis of the origin story of New Mexico’s modern water management system. Maria Lane’s Fluid Geographies traces New Mexico’s transition from a community-based to an expert-led system of water management during the pre-statehood era. To understand this major shift, Lane carefully examines the primary conflict of the time, which pitted Indigenous and Nuevomexicano communities, with their long-established systems of irrigation management, against Anglo-American settlers, who benefitted from centralized bureaucratic management of water. The newcomers’ system eventually became settled law, but water disputes have continued throughout the district courts of New Mexico’s Rio Grande watershed ever since. Using a fine-grained analysis of legislative texts and nearly two hundred district court cases, Lane analyzes evolving cultural patterns and attitudes toward water use and management in a pivotal time in New Mexico’s history. Illuminating complex themes for a general audience, Fluid Geographies helps readers understand how settler colonialism constructed a racialized understanding of scientific expertise and legitimized the dispossession of nonwhite communities in New Mexico.

RESUMO A presente dissertação é composta por duas partes. A primeira passa em revista as mais relevantes abordagens filosóficas sobre a distribuição justa de bens que se foram afirmando ao longo da História; a sua selecção e estudo teve em vista identificar aquelas que exercem maior influência sobre o debate contemporâneo sobre a despesa pública, e em que medida contribuem para o mesmo. A segunda parte situa-se no plano da discussão jurídico-constitucional sobre a despesa pública, em Portugal. Ela começa por evidenciar um aparente alheamento do texto constitucional relativamente ao tema da Justiça na despesa pública. Dá também nota da medida em que a recepção dos critérios de convergência económica adoptados no seio da União Europeia tem aproximado o entendimento sobre o gasto público de uma lógica estritamente contabilística, em que ?cortar? parece ser a palavra de ordem. E termina recentrando o debate sobre a despesa pública no paradigma de distribuição justa de bens, que se identifica como sendo o principal critério jurídico-constitucional. A presente dissertação avança, por fim, com uma proposta de noção de despesa pública justa, conferindo centralidade à reserva do financeiramente possível, sem porém prescindir de identificar deveres de prestação pública que constrangem a liberdade do legislador orçamental.

Los trabajos aquí reunidos buscan crear un puente entre, por un lado, investigaciones que arrojan luz sobre el acontecimiento traductor en contextos latinoamericanos y lenguas hasta ahora poco estudiados y, por el otro, preocupaciones vigentes en el ámbito más general de los estudios de traducción. Entre estas últimas están el establecimiento de circuitos específicos para la importación y exportación de literaturas; las iniciativas de revitalización lingüística emprendidas ya desde el Estado, ya desde las propias comunidades de hablantes de lenguas originarias; las políticas culturales y lingüísticas que buscan responder a los cambios demográficos relacionados con las migraciones; el papel de los intérpretes y traductores ante las crisis migratorias; la contribución del estudio de las traducciones a la historia cultural y, sin ánimo de agotar la lista, la mirada autorreflexiva que, a partir del "giro sociológico", algunos traductólogos comienzan a esbozar. Los autores convocados contribuyen a tres ejes de reflexión: "traducción y cosmopolitismo", "traducción y relecturas críticas" y "traducción e historia cultural". In this book, the authors present current research in the study of the formation, environmental monitoring and impact assessment of monsoons. Topics include the synergistic influence of El Nino/La Nina and Indian Ocean dipole on Indian summer monsoon rainfall; comparative characteristics of land surface thermal-hydrologic processes among monsoonal, non-monsoonal, and monsoon regions over Northern China during summer monsoon periods; Findlater jet intensity and characteristics in relation to Indian summer monsoons; and the characteristics of the change between dry and rainy seasons or summer and winter seasons using monitoring data during the Cambodian and Japanese monsoon zones.

Recent advances in analytical chemistry have turned it into a virtually unrecognizable science compared to a few decades ago, when it lagged behind other sciences and techniques. However, advances in analytical science have been far from universal: while innovations in instrumentation and data acquisition and processing systems have reached unprecedented levels thanks to parallel breakthroughs in computer science and chemo metrics, progress in preliminary operations has been much slower despite their importance to analytical results. Thus, such clear trends in analytical process development as automation and miniaturization have not reached preliminary operations to the same extent, even though this area is pro bably in the greatest need. Improvement in preliminary operations is thus an urgent goal of analytical chemistry on the verge of the twenty first century. Increased R&D endeavours and manufacture of commercially available automatic equipment for implementation of the wide variety of operations that separate the uncollected, unmeasured, untreated sample from the signal measuring step are thus crucial on account of the wide variability of such operations, which precludes development of all-purpose equipment, and the complexity of some, particularly relating to solid samples. Supercritical fluid extraction opens up interesting prospects in this context and is no doubt an effective approach to automatioI1 and mini aturization in the preliminary steps of the analytical process. The dramatic developments achieved in its short life are atypical in many respects.

Basic Landscape Ecology is intended to be a starting point for the study of landscape ecology. The goal is to provide a contemporary synthesis of basic landscape ecological concepts with an applied interpretation. The text is divided into two sections. The first section, which consists of six chapters, is intended to provide a uniform background for students from various academic disciplines. Translating Contemporary Mexican Texts: Fidelity to Alterity addresses an area of research that has received little if any attention in translation theory: the translation into English of contact neologisms and code-switching in Mexican Spanish. The translator of Mexican texts is invited to review the historical background and the sociopolitical and linguistic factors that have led to the emergence of new varieties of English and Spanish, in particular the mixed varieties and code-switching common to parts of Mexico and the United States, often known collectively as Spanglish. Since translation should not consist of effacing the Other, Translating Contemporary Mexican Texts provides conceptual tools and practical advice for carrying out foreignizing translations that allow for a degree of preservation of linguistic and cultural differences through the employment of heterogeneous discourse.
