Geographies of Mars

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Geographies of Mars
This volume "explores the origins of our Martian obsession in the late nineteenth century" and examines "the way turn-of-the-century Americans and Europeans thought about space, knowledge, and power." The author paints a picture of how "scientists and the public saw [Mars] around the beginning of the 20th century, when canals on the Red Planet seemed a very real possibility." It is a story of mountain observatories, of fieldwork conducted at a distance, and of how Mars''s geographers sought social and scientific legitimacy, exploring how astronomy and geography intersected in the debates over the existence of life on Mars.

This third novel by Jane Austen; Mansfield Park; has brought about a drastic change not previously seen in other works by the author. Mansfield Park highlights more serious issues such as religion, slavery, and politics. In the most eloquent tone, Jane manages to take seemingly unattractive topics and meld them into a powerful story full of brilliance. This beautifully illustrated 200th Anniversary Edition captures the essence of Austen''s original work, while also including the body of illustrations first introduced in 1908 by artist C.E. Brock. In keeping with its original format, Queensbridge decided to include all three original volumes. (c) 2014 Queensbridge Publishing

Fluid Geographies

release date: Jul 19, 2024
Fluid Geographies
"Maria Lane''s Fluid Geographies traces New Mexico''s transition in the pre-statehood era from community-based water management to an expert-led structure controlled by engineers and bureaucrats. To understand this shift Lane carefully examines the chief conflict of the period, which pitted Indigenous and Nuevomexicano communities, with their long-established and locally organized systems of irrigation management, against Anglo-American settlers, with their Progressive-era preference for scientific expertise and centralized bureaucratic management of water. The newcomers succeeded in imposing their will, though disputes over water rights wended their way through the district courts of New Mexico''s Rio Grande watershed for many years. Lane has gathered the records of more than 125 such cases, which she uses as the basis for a spatial analysis of evolving cultural patterns and attitudes toward water use and management in this time and place. Ultimately Lane shows that modernist water policy both reflected and helped construct a racialized understanding of scientific expertise, and in the process legitimized the dispossession of Indigenous and Nuevomexicano communities throughout the Rio Grande watershed"--

Translating Contemporary Mexican Texts

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Translating Contemporary Mexican Texts
Translating Contemporary Mexican Texts: Fidelity to Alterity addresses an area of research that has received little if any attention in translation theory: the translation into English of contact neologisms and code-switching in Mexican Spanish. The translator of Mexican texts is invited to review the historical background and the sociopolitical and linguistic factors that have led to the emergence of new varieties of English and Spanish, in particular the mixed varieties and code-switching common to parts of Mexico and the United States, often known collectively as Spanglish. Since translation should not consist of effacing the Other, Translating Contemporary Mexican Texts provides conceptual tools and practical advice for carrying out foreignizing translations that allow for a degree of preservation of linguistic and cultural differences through the employment of heterogeneous discourse.

City of Green Benches

City of Green Benches

In this contribution to gerontology theory, Vesperi examines the cultural construction of old age in American society and its impact on the self-concept of the aged.

The Culture of Long Term Care

release date: Aug 30, 1995
The Culture of Long Term Care
This is the only collection of its kind to offer an inside view of life and work in contemporary nursing homes with the purpose of developing a theory of the culture of long term care. The anthropological research in nursing homes presented here produces a seldom seen native view of patients, staff, and the day-to-day workings of American nursing homes. The use of ethnographic methods penetrates the reality barriers found in industry descriptions, muck-raking discourse, and general societal aversion toward nursing homes. The tensions found between and within staff culture and patient culture are explored in terms of adaptations to institutional life in the context of current policy and the larger American ageist culture.

Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control

Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control
This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Hybrid - stems: Computation and Control (HSCC 2001) held in Rome, Italy on March 28-30, 2001. The Workshop on Hybrid Systems attracts researchers from in- stry and academia interested in modeling, analysis, synthesis, and implemen- tion of dynamic and reactive systems involving both discrete (integer, logical, symbolic) and continuous behaviors. It is a forum for the discussion of the - test developments in all aspects of hybrid systems, including formal models and computational representations, algorithms and heuristics, computational tools, and new challenging applications. The Fourth HSCC International Workshop continues the series of workshops held in Grenoble, France (HART’97), Berkeley, California, USA (HSCC’98), N- megen, The Netherlands (HSCC’99), and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA (HSCC 2000). Proceedings of these workshops have been published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series by Springer-Verlag. In line with the beautiful work that led to the design of the palace in which the workshop was held, Palazzo Lancellotti in Rome, resulting from the col- boration of many artists and architects of di erent backgrounds, the challenge faced by the hybrid system community is to harmonize and extract the best from two main research areas: computer science and control theory.
