Numerical Methods in Finance with C++
Driven by concrete computational problems in quantitative finance, this book provides aspiring quant developers with the numerical techniques and programming skills they need. The authors start from scratch, so the reader does not need any previous experience of C++. Beginning with straightforward option pricing on binomial trees, the book gradually progresses towards more advanced topics, including nonlinear solvers, Monte Carlo techniques for path-dependent derivative securities, finite difference methods for partial differential equations, and American option pricing by solving a linear complementarity problem. Further material, including solutions to all exercises and C++ code, is available online. The book is ideal preparation for work as an entry-level quant programmer and it gives readers the confidence to progress to more advanced skill sets involving C++ design patterns as applied in finance.

Electrochemistry of Technetium

release date: Jan 17, 2021
Electrochemistry of Technetium
This book provides detailed information on the electrochemistry of technetium compounds. After a brief physico-chemical characterization of this element, it presents the comparative chemistry of technetium, manganese and rhenium. Particular attention is paid to the stability, disproportionation, comproportionation, hydrolysis and polymerization reactions of technetium ions and their influence on the observed redox systems. The electrochemical properties of both inorganic as well as organic technetium species in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions are also discussed. The respective chapters cover the whole spectrum of topics related to the application of technetium in nuclear medicine, electrochemistry of technetium in spent nuclear fuel (including corrosion properties of technetium alloys), and detecting trace amounts of technetium with the aid of electrochemical methods. Providing readers with information not easily obtained in any other single source, the book will appeal to researchers working in nuclear chemistry, nuclear medicine or the nuclear industry.

The European Parliament – more powerful, less legitimate? An outlook for the 7th legislature
At the end of the 6th legislature, fears that enlargement would hamper the workings of the European Parliament have largely proved unfounded. Despite the influx of many new members to Parliament, parties have remained cohesive, and legislative output has remained steady. Moreover, after an initial phase of adaptation, MEPs from new member states have been increasingly socialised into the EP structure. Challenges have arisen in a rather different field, however. In order to remain efficient in the face of increasing complexity, the EP has had to streamline its working procedures, moving more decisions to parliamentary committees and cutting down time for debate. This paper argues that measures to increase the efficiency of the EP, most notably the trend towards speeding up agreements with the Council (1st reading agreements) run the risk of undermining the EP's role as a forum of debate. Should bureaucratisation increasingly trump politicisation, the legitimacy of the EP will be undermined, and voters will become ever more alienated from its work. For the 7th legislature of the European Parliament therefore, it is crucial to balance efficiency of output with a more politicised policy style that is able to capture public interest.

Kant's Transcendental illusion. The examination of working principles

Kant's Transcendental illusion. The examination of working principles
Essay from the year 2023 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the 17th and 18th Centuries, grade: A, Utrecht University, course: Analytical Metaphysics, language: English, abstract: We are born and die in the empirical world. We spend our whole lives surrounded by sensible objects, and nothing indicates that our mind should be bothered by things beyond the realm of experience, if they exist at all. However, our mind undertakes precisely this kind of challenge, i.e., it tries to reach the unknown and the unreachable. This poses a question: why would we bother? Why is our mind interested in issues such as things in themselves or God? Why are we trying to attach predicates to them, and, most importantly, why do most of us fall into the trap of thinking that we have a legitimate right to do so? Immanuel Kant identified this phenomenon as the transcendental illusion, which is a tendency to apply concepts beyond their empirical use, even if one is perfectly aware of it.1 Just as the stick submerged in water seems to be curved, applying concepts beyond experience is equally unavoidable, even when one has realised it is an illusion. Even though Kant described in detail the three faculties that later led to empirical cognitions, he did not explicitly state how these faculties, especially the faculties of intuition and understanding, contributed to the rise of transcendental illusion. Consequently, the question this paper aims to answer is: How is transcendental illusion possible?

Degradation of Ascorbic Acid in Different Temperatures. The Influence of Temperature on Vitamin C

release date: Aug 27, 2021
Degradation of Ascorbic Acid in Different Temperatures. The Influence of Temperature on Vitamin C
Scientific Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Chemistry - Food Chemistry, grade: 7 (IB), , language: English, abstract: This paper aims to investigate how different temperatures influence the degradation of vitamin C as well as to clarify the preconception about this vitamin. More specifically, the relationship between the temperature and the concentration of vitamin C will be researched. The research suggests that vitamin C degrades in elevated temperatures so it is highly probable that it also degrades in hot tea and other hot beverages. Consequently, vitamin C is rather not the component of hot tea with lemon juice that provides curative properties, opposite to what many people believe. The subject is important because it extends the knowledge about how vitamin C degrades in different temperatures and how to handle this vitamin properly. The research shows at which temperature vitamin C is most effective and this information could be useful for pharmaceutical companies when improving the effectiveness and medicinal properties of drugs where vitamin C is the main constituent. The investigation uses the method of redox titration of vitamin C with iodine solution and the detailed information about this process is presented.

Problems on Partial Differential Equations

release date: May 07, 2019
Problems on Partial Differential Equations
This book covers a diverse range of topics in Mathematical Physics, linear and nonlinear PDEs. Though the text reflects the classical theory, the main emphasis is on introducing readers to the latest developments based on the notions of weak solutions and Sobolev spaces. In numerous problems, the student is asked to prove a given statement, e.g. to show the existence of a solution to a certain PDE. Usually there is no closed-formula answer available, which is why there is no answer section, although helpful hints are often provided. This textbook offers a valuable asset for students and educators alike. As it adopts a perspective on PDEs that is neither too theoretical nor too practical, it represents the perfect companion to a broad spectrum of courses.

Energy Transition of the Electricity Sectors in the European Union and Japan

release date: Jul 08, 2022
Energy Transition of the Electricity Sectors in the European Union and Japan
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the energy policies in the European Union and Japan in terms of electricity markets and climate action, including energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and the reduction of emissions. The book evaluates and compares the regulatory frameworks for achieving energy transitions by answering a number of questions focused on the essence and range of the regulatory models used by leading global economies which herald carbon neutrality by 2050. The book provides a useful framework that systematises Japanese and European energy policies and legislation including electricity-related policies, plans, and programmes. Discussing these issues in relation to the European and Japanese 2050 energy transition the author delves into the four pillars of the transition: market reform, reduction of emissions, promotion of renewables, and enhancing energy efficiency. Each chapter demonstrates the timing of the actions undertaken both in Europe and Japan; analyses the character of the conducted actions, evaluates the stakeholders of the realised agenda; and presents the technologies involved in the energy transition.

Cardinalities of Fuzzy Sets

release date: Mar 11, 2003
Cardinalities of Fuzzy Sets
Counting is one of the basic elementary mathematical activities. It comes with two complementary aspects: to determine the number of elements of a set - and to create an ordering between the objects of counting just by counting them over. For finite sets of objects these two aspects are realized by the same type of num bers: the natural numbers. That these complementary aspects of the counting pro cess may need different kinds of numbers becomes apparent if one extends the process of counting to infinite sets. As general tools to determine numbers of elements the cardinals have been created in set theory, and set theorists have in parallel created the ordinals to count over any set of objects. For both types of numbers it is not only counting they are used for, it is also the strongly related process of calculation - especially addition and, derived from it, multiplication and even exponentiation - which is based upon these numbers. For fuzzy sets the idea of counting, in both aspects, looses its naive foundation: because it is to a large extent founded upon of the idea that there is a clear distinc tion between those objects which have to be counted - and those ones which have to be neglected for the particular counting process.

Implicit versus explicit knowledge in foreign language learning

release date: May 06, 2014
Implicit versus explicit knowledge in foreign language learning
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: gut, University of Poznan (Institute of English), course: Teaching methods, language: English, abstract: The differentiation between explicit and implicit knowledge has been a key issue discussed by researchers involved in second language acquisition throughout the last several decades. Some follow the ideas of Stephen Krashen, the trail blazer of studies concerning implicit knowledge and focus on meaning. Other, believe that explicit knowledge is more important. The core of this BA thesis is an empirical study measuring implicit and explicit knowledge of a group secondary school students. The study is preceded by two chapters discussing relevant issues about implicit and explicit knowledge as well as various tests that measure the knowledge of a subject. The first chapter describes the similarities and differences between explicit and implicit knowledge. It provides general information that is developed later on, or that needs to be mentioned in order to supply sufficient details that form the background of the empirical research that is presented in the third chapter. The main aim of the first chapter is to present seven dimensions which help to distinguish implicit knowledge from explicit knowledge. This chapter also touches upon the issue of learning difficulty of certain grammatical features. The second chapter is a description of various criteria on the basis of which implicit and explicit knowledge is measured. What is more, there are different tests that measure implicit and explicit knowledge included in this section, together with the ways in which they are formed, and the importance they have in measuring a given type of knowledge. The aforementioned tests encompass the imitation test, timed as well as the untimed version of the grammar judgement test (GJT), oral narrative test, and finally the metalinguistic knowledge test. The third chapter is an empirical study prepared by the author. It is divided into two parts, and measures both implicit and explicit knowledge of the participants. The study itself was inspired by three other experiments, but it also possesses its original and unique ideas. Apart from measuring implicit and explicit knowledge, it also explores metalinguistic knowledge and the issue of systematicity. The research analyses several key questions, the most important concerning which type of knowledge learners from a typical secondary school in Poland make use of more efficiently.

Judicial Review of Competition Law Enforcement in the EU Member States and the UK

release date: Sep 17, 2024
Judicial Review of Competition Law Enforcement in the EU Member States and the UK
International Competition Law Series#91 Enforcement of competition law often calls for a complex economic and legal assessment, and the review of those enforcement decisions usually falls to national courts. In this connection, however, European competition law and legal scholarship have offered scant guidance on how judicial review should and does function. This book, the first comprehensive, systematic, and comparative empirical study of judicial review of competition law public enforcement in the EU and the UK, provides a thorough understanding of the practical operation of the role of judicial review in competition enforcement. A country-by-country analysis, along with a detailed introduction and an incisive comparative summary, covers all publicly available judicial review judgments – 5,707 in all – of final public enforcement actions in relation to Articles 101 and 102 TFEU and relevant national provisions in the twenty-seven EU Member States and the UK rendered between 1 May 2004 and 30 April 2021. The data presented draws on a rich database built for the purpose of this study by twenty-eight national teams of competition law academics and practitioners. For each jurisdiction, the analysis focuses on such aspects as the following: structure of the national enforcement system; number of judgments rendered; success rate; types of appellants; competition rules subject to review; grounds of review; use of preliminary references; appeals involving leniency and/or settlements; and role of third parties. Numerous graphs, figures, and tables support the presentation. In the light it sheds on trends in judicial review of competition law enforcement on a comparative basis, and in its data-driven assessment of how the decentralised judicial review of EU competition law meets EU integration aims, this important study will be of inestimable value to competition lawyers, policymakers, and academics in developing a confident understanding of precisely how judicial review in this area operates in each of the EU Member States and the UK. In addition, the book provides a significant contribution not only with respect to EU and national competition laws but also, more broadly, to comparative administrative law scholarship in Europe.

Umadevi

Umadevi

The God Resheph in the Ancient Near East

release date: Jan 01, 2013
The God Resheph in the Ancient Near East
Resheph was quite a popular god in the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC - especially in Syria - but during the 1st millennium his cult became extinct. Finally it was only maintained in several peripheral and isolated sites, such as in the Palmyra desert and in Cyprus. Maciej M. Munnich presents the written sources which mentioned Resheph and analyzes the features of Resheph's cult. He emphasizes that there is no confirmation for the theory that Resheph was a lord of the netherworld. Resheph was a belligerent, aggressive god who used diseases to attack people, but who could also heal. Because of the long period of the cult and the geographical range, one can notice some local features: In Egypt, for instance, Resheph originally was venerated as the deity supporting the Pharaoh in battles, but then he was summoned mainly because of illness and everyday needs.

The proposed remedies can also be applied appropriately to other priceless shared goods and cross-border properties.

Nonlinear Predictive Control Using Wiener Models

release date: Sep 21, 2021
Nonlinear Predictive Control Using Wiener Models
This book presents computationally efficient MPC solutions. The classical model predictive control (MPC) approach to control dynamical systems described by the Wiener model uses an inverse static block to cancel the influence of process nonlinearity. Unfortunately, the model's structure is limited, and it gives poor control quality in the case of an imperfect model and disturbances. An alternative is to use the computationally demanding MPC scheme with on-line nonlinear optimisation repeated at each sampling instant. A linear approximation of the Wiener model or the predicted trajectory is found on-line. As a result, quadratic optimisation tasks are obtained. Furthermore, parameterisation using Laguerre functions is possible to reduce the number of decision variables. Simulation results for ten benchmark processes show that the discussed MPC algorithms lead to excellent control quality. For a neutralisation reactor and a fuel cell, essential advantages of neural Wiener models are demonstrated.

Electoral Defeat and Party Change

Electoral Defeat and Party Change
This book examines the factors determining the character, depth, scope and outcomes of changes made by political parties in the aftermath of electoral losses. It considers not only the objective aspects of party organisation and its features and structure, in explaining post-defeat party change, but also includes findings on the perceptions and interpretations of electoral results within political parties. Based on an extensive fieldwork, the authors propose a new analytical perspective to establish whether and under what conditions and circumstances an electoral defeat leads to a profound party makeover.

Identifying Security Logics in the EU Policy Discourse

release date: Feb 10, 2022
Identifying Security Logics in the EU Policy Discourse
This open access book investigates the complexity and the modalities of securitization of migration and border control at the EU level. It discusses and compares how different EU institutions and agencies have been deploying different logics of security, e.g. humanitarianism or management of risk, while framing increased migratory flows and so called migration crisis as a security problem. The book argues that the (re)development of EU migration and border control policies in response to increased migratory flows of 2015 have revealed an increasingly tangled nature of securitization of migration in the EU. This is reflected in the intertwining of security logics where migrants and human mobility tend to be securitized through different, sometimes multiple, interpretative lenses at different stages of policy framing. From a theoretical point of view, the book develops a fresh analytical perspective that further contributes to burgeoning discussion on securitization theory. By bridging the literature on policy framing and securitization it makes a significant contribution to the debates on both securitization and migration. As such this book is of great interest to students, academics, policy makers and all those working in the fields of EU politics, migration, security, and international relations.
