Future Readiness and the System for Health

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Future Readiness and the System for Health
The health of the force is among the most important indicators of Army readiness and is critical to both the present and future readiness of the force. The Army defines individual medical readiness (IMR) as the ability to achieve medical fitness standards within 72 hours of deployment. Future health readiness focuses on Soldier wellness, maximization of holistic health, and prevention of chronic disease and injury. Improvements in future health readiness should increase rates of IMR, improve the health of the force, and decrease DoD and Army healthcare costs. Army doctrine, systems, and programs such as the System for Health, the Performance Triad, and the Army Wellness Centers provide a strong framework for Army health promotion. Improvements in Army doctrine, systems, programs, and policies as well as further alignment with wellness industry best practices will increase future health readiness in the Army and provide cost savings to the Military Health System.

Stratigraphy, Tectonic Setting, and Geological History of Late Precambrian Volcanic-sedimentary-plutonic Belts in Southeastern Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Stratigraphy, Tectonic Setting, and Geological History of Late Precambrian Volcanic-sedimentary-plutonic Belts in Southeastern Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
This bulletin is the result of a systematic remapping of the Late Precambrian volcanic, sedimentary, and plutonic rocks of south-eastern Cape Breton Island, last mapped in the 1940s. The investigative work included precise uranium-lead dating from key units throughout the study area, showing the differences in ages in the volcanic and sedimentary rocks previously lumped together as a single unit. These rocks have been divided into three groups based on ages, and each group has been subdivided into lithofacies units. Petrological/geochemical data are used in combination with field observations to interpret the tectonic setting and geological evolution of the study area. Major units described in the bulletin include the Stirling belt, the East Bay Hills belt, the Coxheath Hills belt, the Sporting Mountain belt, the coastal belt, and Upper Precambrian to Lower Palaeozoic units.

Cities Without Skylines
There is a large literature in the U.S. measuring the extent and stringency of land-use regulations in urban areas and how these regulations affect important outcomes such as housing prices and economic growth. This paper is the first to present an international measure of regulatory stringency by estimating what we call building-height gaps. Using a novel geospatialized data set on the year of construction and heights of tall buildings around the world, we compare the total height of a country''s actual stock of tall buildings to what the total height would have been if building-height regulations were relatively less stringent, based on parameters from a benchmark set of countries. We find that these gaps are larger for richer countries and for residential buildings rather than for commercial buildings. The building-heights gaps correlate strongly with other measures of land-use regulation and international measures of housing prices, sprawl, congestion and pollution. Taken together, the results suggest that stringent building-height regulations around the world might be imposing relatively large welfare losses.
