Gender Complementarian Ideology

Gender Complementarian Ideology
System Justification Theory posits that there is a universal motivation to view self-relevant social, political, and economic systems as just, legitimate, desirable, and stable. Among the processes and mechanisms of system justification are conservative religions, ideologies, and complementary stereotypes. Benevolently sexist (i.e., gender complementarian) stereotypes attribute to women positive qualities that men purportedly lack; inherent in benevolent sexism, however, is the notion that women are inferior to men. Research has demonstrated that when confronted with benevolent sexism, women respond with specific, predictable changes in behavior and self-definition. The present study investigated the effects of benevolent sexism and salient religion in a population of single, female, Evangelical Christian undergraduate students at a private religious university in Southern California. The general hypotheses were that salient religion and benevolent sexism would induce effects consonant with system justification theory and research. Specifically, it was hypothesized that salient religion and benevolent sexism would (a) increase endorsement of female gender-linked personality traits (femininity), (b) decrease endorsement of male gender-linked personality traits (masculinity), (c) decrease entitlement to financial compensation for work performed, (d) increase positive affect, (e) decrease negative affect, (f) increase satisfaction with life, and (g) increase satisfaction with college life. Need to Belong and Religious Fundamentalism were hypothesized to potentiate the predicted effects. Results showed that participants exposed to benevolent sexism endorsed significantly less negative affect than participants in the control condition.

Doing God's Work
This book is a compilation of wisdom from the members of Hope Network Ministries. Think of it as both an introduction and an invitation. It's an introduction to the practical nature of what Hope Network does. Each chapter is written by someone in the trenches who both understands the challenges of contemporary ministry and has experience in navigating them. It's also an invitation to reach out to any of the authors of this volume for deeper conversation. They didn't write their chapters to show off what they know. They wrote them to make you aware of their availability to walk this path with you. While each chapter of this book addresses ministry challenges from a different perspective, they all communicate the same basic message. That message is that you are not alone in your struggle. There is hope in the form of a network of other ministers who are here to assist you.

Nonlinearity in the Returns-earnings and Returns-cash Flows Relations

release date: Jan 01, 1997
Nonlinearity in the Returns-earnings and Returns-cash Flows Relations
Abstract: This study analyzes the relations between returns and earnings and returns and cash flows. The purpose is to determine how accounting information is associated with firm performance (market returns). These relations are studied over both short (one and five years) and long (ten years) measurement intervals. Models with varying degrees of distributional restrictions are employed to determine the nature of these relations over each interval. These are OLS, arctan (nonlinear), and a semiparametric (single index) model. Within each measurement interval, firms are partitioned into quartiles based on the length of the firm's operating cycle. The operating cycle measures how long it takes a firm to convert cash outflows to cash inflows from operations. It also measures the approximate length of time that it takes for changes in operations to result in changes in firm profitability. Nonlinearities likely occur in the returns-earnings relation in part because of the timing of recognition differences in the accrual system. Information is likely recognized by the market before it is in accounting. This differential in recognition results in different valuation coefficients on different components of accounting earnings. Certain components of earnings may have already been recognized by the market so a lower coefficient results. It is likely that extreme earnings contain a higher proportion of these types of components so nonlinearities result in the tails of the earnings distribution. Since changes in operations for firms with shorter operating cycles likely impact the firm's profitability more quickly, I expect the returns-earnings relation to become linear more quickly for these firms. I hypothesize and results show that the returns-earnings relation is nonlinear over the shorter measurement intervals and become linear as the measurement interval is lengthened for firms with shorter operating cycles. The returns-cash flows relation is also nonlinear for most operating cycle partitions over shorter windows and approximates linearity for most operating cycle partitions over longer intervals. On average, earnings explain a higher proportion of returns than do cash flows for all measurement intervals. This result is even more pronounced when well-specified models are employed.

Examining Elementary Students' Use of Electronic Readers for Independent Reading

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Examining Elementary Students' Use of Electronic Readers for Independent Reading
The impetus for this study was to understand a relatively new phenomenon, elementary students' use of electronic readers for independent reading, and the impact it might have on reading behaviors. Interested in students' perspectives, I examined third grade students' experiences using electronic readers, including references to self-descriptions of reading motivation and engagement. This descriptive case study addresses the research question: In what ways does reading on electronic readers during independent reading affect third grade students' reading experiences and behaviors? Daily observations of students' reading behaviors during independent reading were recorded in detailed field notes. In addition, transcripts of conversations during weekly book discussions where my participants shared the books they were reading and their reading experiences were gathered. Transcripts of pre- and post- interviews, annotations made on the electronic reader, and reading logs recording the number of books read were also collected. In order to create narratives of young readers portraying the details of my participants' experiences using electronic readers during independent reading, I completed descriptive analyses using the constant comparative method across my observations, interviews, and documents. Findings from this study capture the multidimensionality of participants' lived experiences and provide insight for teachers integrating this digital tool into literacy to promote increased reading motivation and engagement. The five major findings include increased a) engagement in reading, b) motivation to read, c) positive attitudes toward reading, d) reading volume, and e) ease of reading using the electronic reader compared to regular books. This study illuminates the reading possibilities electronic readers offer elementary students by providing choice of and access to a multitude of reading materials based on students' interests, the opportunity to read anywhere and anytime, and a context through which to interact socially with others about reading. Obtaining documentation directly from students sharing their experiences, this research provides teachers support to pursue the use of electronic readers by offering information on the perceived benefits of incorporating this digital tool into their literacy instruction. In my opinion, the electronic reader, according to this study, is one tool we need to ignite a passion for reading.

Field Distribution and Effects of Bt-expressing Corn Anthers on Survival, Development, and Behavior of the Monarch Butterfly, Danaus Plexippus (L.)

Field Distribution and Effects of Bt-expressing Corn Anthers on Survival, Development, and Behavior of the Monarch Butterfly, Danaus Plexippus (L.)
Previous studies suggest that exposure to anthers from corn, Zea mays L., expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-derived protein may have adverse effects on larvae of the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus (L.). The objectives of this research were to: 1) measure the effects of short-term and long-term exposure to anthers in the laboratory, 2) examine anther distribution in space and time, 3) measure the effects of long-term exposure to anthers in the field, 4) examine how exposure to Bt anthers and pollen affects larval fitness and behavior, and 5) investigate how larvae were affected by Bt anthers without detectable ingestion of Bt anther tissue. Laboratory studies revealed that monarch butterfly larvae will feed on anthers on milkweed leaves and showed that Bt anthers are a potential hazard to monarch butterflies. However, toxic anther densities are rare on milweeds in and near corn fields. Field-cage studies detected no adverse effects on development or survival after larvae were exposed to five Bt anthers per leaf for 11 days. Based on a low probability of exposure to toxic densities, Bt anthers alone are not likely to pose a significant risk to monarch butterflies in Iowa. Data from petri dish and cage studies supported the hypothesis that exposure to Bt anthers and pollen have additive effects on larvae and a possible behavior mechanism for additive effects was revealed. A video-tracking system was used to investigate effects seen on larval feeding and weight after 4 days of exposure to Bt with little detectable anther-tissue feeding. A possible hypothesis to explain these effects is that exposure to Bt anthers results in increased searching behavior which in turn results in less feeding and reduced weight. Larvae did not exhibit increased searching behavior when exposed to Bt anthers, but they did exhibit some degree of avoidance. Although the behavioral changes seen in this study are not likely to occur in the field because the anther density tested is rare and natural feeding behaviors already mitigate exposure to Bt anthers, this study shows that direct toxicity is not the only means by which a toxin like Bt can affect non-target insects.

Atrazine Mineralization Potential and Catabolic Gene Detection in Agricultural and Wetland Sites

Atrazine Mineralization Potential and Catabolic Gene Detection in Agricultural and Wetland Sites
Abstract: Atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamine-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5 triazine) is a commonly applied herbicide in corn fields. Although the fate of atrazine in agricultural systems has been well studied, the environmental fate of atrazine in wetland systems is less well characterized. The majority of research in this area has focused on aerobic mineralization of atrazine, although anaerobic conditions are commonly found in wetland sediments and bulk soils associated with agricultural fields. The hypothesis for this work was that atrazine would be actively mineralized in agricultural and wetland sites. It was further hypothesized that active mineralization in soils could be correlated with the presence of selected genes involved in atrazine metabolism. Soil, sediment, and water samples were obtained from three sites in Ohio. Atrazine mineralization was investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in these samples using a biometer system in which 14CO 2 evolution was correlated with atrazine mineralization. All samples mineralized atrazine under aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, some external electron acceptor amendments inhibited mineralization, while others enhanced it. The effect on mineralization varied with the sample and season. Attempts were made to amplify some of the genes involved in atrazine mineralization. Community DNA was isolated from each sample and PCR amplification using three primer sets specific for atzA, trzD, and trzN was performed. Although PCR inhibitors were present in many of the samples, trzN and trzD could be successfully amplified from some DNA samples. All Defiance samples tested positive for trzN with the exception of field B and reservoir water samples. An analog of trzD was amplified from DNA extracted from Defiance and OSU wetland samples. The atzA gene was not detected in any of the samples. An atrazine mineralizing bacterium was isolated from Piketon soil samples and another was obtained from Defiance corn soil. Characterization of these organisms by 16S rDNA sequencing and FAME analysis indicated that both organisms were Arthrobacter spp. From these results, it is clear that the potential for atrazine mineralization was identified in agricultural soils and wetland sediments. No correlation could be made between atrazine mineralization and the presence of any of the tested genes involved in atrazine mineralization.

Cultural Performance Corporate Style
This study examines life in a corporation as cultural performance. This work has been an opportunity to engage in critical interpretation of employee experiences with corporate culture change through participant observation. It offers valuable insight into labor and management concerns over organizational stability and socialization within a context of a rapidly changing global economy. The methodology of this research is interdisciplinary, applying performance theory and organizational behavior/institutional theory to a masked case study of a United States-based corporation which engaged in its own culture change to improve its economic bottom-line. This study also reveals how the corporate employees' perspectives on affiliation, quality, and good corporate citizenship are inscribed and represented within daily performances of organizational life. Although the organizational members' goals were economically and quantitatively driven, their processes were most definitely qualitatively aesthetic and embodied through performance. By mobilizing a decentralized participatory change process, corporate leaders invited employees' new approaches to problem solving which helped yield significant economic and organizational benefits. This work will be of interest to scholars of performance, cultural studies, and organizational behavior.
