The Jewish Problem

The Jewish Problem
Traces the history of antisemitism, stressing the Jews'' lack of power and, hence, victimization. Christianity was responsible for the enduring anti-Jewish prejudice, which stemmed from the charge of deicide and was expressed in anti-Jewish legislation and attempts at forced conversion. The Jews suffered massacres during the Crusades and during ritual murder and host desecration accusations. Their role as moneylenders condemned them to calumny and stereotyping. Emancipation failed. With the rise of racial antisemitism and conspiracy theories, the Jews were rejected as aliens and as seeking to control the world. Describes Nazi persecution of Jews, such as economic boycotts and expulsions from schools and the professions, with the result of thousands of Jews committing suicide. Discusses Nazi propaganda in Britain, Eastern Europe, North America, and Italy. Highlights fascism in England, as well as in Romania and Hungary. Laments the West''s failure to offer shelter to persecuted Jews. Considers Palestine the only real possible refuge. Hopes, but does not expect, that Germany will rescind its antisemitic policies. Calls for the British to reject antisemitic prejudice and for British Jews to assume a lower profile.
