Examining Millennials Reshaping Organizational Cultures

release date: Dec 03, 2018
Examining Millennials Reshaping Organizational Cultures
In From Theory to Practice: Examining Millennials Reshaping Organizational Cultures, contributors to the collection focus on several interrelated issues. They examine the ways in which the members of the millennial generation influence how we work and communicate with our millennial students, colleagues and employees. They also elaborate on how to create work-life balance for the members of the millennial generation and explore ways in which millennials can be open and responsive to others in a society who don’t necessarily share the values, political views or desires of the millennial generation, nor the ways in which they prefer to communicate. This collection engages in a scholarly dialogue about millennials and how their actions within the workplace and needs within organizational cultures and everyday performances influence our communication with them. With equal importance, it addresses the question of how millennials can become more adaptable in their communication with others in society, especially within organizations with different generations, or cultures that may or may not communicate the way they do. Contributors suggest that the millennial culture should be carefully studied by employers, instructors, and researchers to create a better workplace experience, and to also improve the level of communication among different generations in the workplace.

Postcolonial Automobility

release date: Oct 24, 2017
Postcolonial Automobility
For more than a century cars have symbolized autonomous, unfettered mobility and an increasingly global experience. And yet, they are often used differently outside the centers of global capitalism. This pioneering book considers how, through the lens of the automobile, we can assess the pleasures, dangers, and limits of global modernity in West Africa. Through new and provocative readings of famous plays, novels, and films, as well as recent popular videos, Postcolonial Automobility reveals the surprising ways in which automobility in the region is, at once, an everyday practice, an ethos, a fantasy of autonomy, and an affective activity intimately tied to modern social life. Lindsey B. Green-Simms begins with the history of motorization in West Africa from the colonial era to the decolonizing decades after World War II, and addresses the tragedy of car accidents through a close reading of Wole Soyinka’s 1965 postindependence play The Road. Shifting to screen media, she discusses Ousmane Sembene’s Xala and Jean-Pierre Bekolo’s Quartier Mozart and reviews popular, low-budget Nollywood films. Finally, Green-Simms considers how feminist texts rewrite and work in dialogue with the male-centered films and novels where the car stands in for patriarchal power and capitalist achievement. Providing a unique perspective on technology in Africa—one refusing to be confined to narratives of either underdevelopment or inevitable progress—and covering a broad range of interdisciplinary material, Postcolonial Automobility will appeal not only to scholars and students of African literature and cinema but also to those in postcolonial and globalization studies.

Queer African Cinemas

release date: Feb 04, 2022
Queer African Cinemas
In Queer African Cinemas, Lindsey B. Green-Simms examines films produced by and about queer Africans in the first two decades of the twenty-first century in an environment of increasing antiqueer violence, efforts to criminalize homosexuality, and other state-sanctioned homophobia. Green-Simms argues that these films not only record the fear, anxiety, and vulnerability many queer Africans experience; they highlight how queer African cinematic practices contribute to imagining new hopes and possibilities. Examining globally circulating international art films as well as popular melodramas made for local audiences, Green-Simms emphasizes that in these films queer resistance—contrary to traditional narratives about resistance that center overt and heroic struggle—is often practiced from a position of vulnerability. By reading queer films alongside discussions about censorship and audiences, Green-Simms renders queer African cinema as a rich visual archive that documents the difficulty of queer existence as well as the potentials for queer life-building and survival.

Sensory Overload
This thesis project explores the application of Universal Design principles to the development of purpose-built rest and play spaces within United States theme parks that provide places of refuge for children with autism and their families. The goal is to offer ideas on how to create spaces where families and individuals can take a break from the over-stimulation of the traditional theme park environment in an area that has been specifically designed with their sensory needs in mind. Though the target demographic for these spaces is children with autism and their families, the ideas offered to create space will not be limited: these spaces will be available to all theme park visitors, providing a space for young children to play, parents to relax, nurse or feed infants, and adults to recharge throughout the day. The overall design of the space will be informed by Universal Design concepts that promote widespread use by individuals of varying needs, utilizing materials, colors, construction methods and flexibility of use to ensure that the space is as accessible as possible for a diverse user group.

Instructional Spelling Strategies that Promote Third Grade Students' Spelling Development

Instructional Spelling Strategies that Promote Third Grade Students' Spelling Development
The research question addressed was, how do third grade students develop as proficient spellers and what instructional strategies most impact this development? The motivating factor for this capstone was the struggle with teaching spelling in the elementary classroom. This capstone includes research on spelling instruction, with findings of the need for teaching spelling developmentally. The key influences of this work were that of Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, and Johnston (2004) from their series Words Their Way. The method of study was qualitative research, employing the curriculum framework of Wiggins and McTighe (1998). This capstone includes a curriculum, modeling what a week of spelling instruction could look like in a developmental spelling classroom.

Understanding Performance Incentives in Postsecondary State Policy

Understanding Performance Incentives in Postsecondary State Policy
This research examined postsecondary policy in Louisiana, which utilizes performance incentives, in order to: (a) provide clear distinctions among three commonly used types of performance incentives, and (b) use performance indicators defined in the LA GRAD Act to determine if Louisiana policy is primarily faculty oriented, state oriented, or client oriented. The author examined nuanced differences among three types of performance incentives: performance funding, performance budgeting, and performance reporting. As a case study, postsecondary performance policies in the state of Louisiana were situated in the performance incentive literature and analyzed using Burke and Associates'' (2002) models of excellence. Categorical models are applied to the LA GRAD Act and will be applied to the subsequent legislation, commonly referred to as LA GRAD Act 2.0. Understanding the LA GRAD Act''s orientation as a performance policy may help leaders of postsecondary institutions anticipate future policy directions and prepare for policy changes that will affect their institutions. This research is on-going as LA GRAD Act 2.0 was only recently passed in the 2011 legislative session.

Nest Success and Life History Syndromes of Island and Continental Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura Rufifrons) Subspecies

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Nest Success and Life History Syndromes of Island and Continental Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura Rufifrons) Subspecies
Insular avian species are predicted to have slower life history syndromes than related continental species, due to lower predator diversity on oceanic islands. However, detailed studies of nest predation, life history and behavior of related oceanic island and continental taxa are lacking. I studied Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) life history traits in New South Wales, Australia and on the oceanic island of Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Average daily survival rate (DSR) of nests was similar between sites, but this owed to a disordinal interaction between site and nest age. DSR was negatively related to nest age in Australia, likely because nest predation by reptiles usually occurred late in the nestling stage. By contrast, DSR was higher in the nestling stage than the egg stage on Rota. Nest site characteristics were unrelated to DSR at both sites and nest fate was not repeatable when fantails reused nest sites for multiple clutches. Therefore, nest predation may occur incidentally, rather than due to intrinsic differences in nest site quality. As expected, insular fantails had a slower life history syndrome: fantails on Rota had longer nestling development periods, higher nestling provisioning rates and slower growth of nestling locomotor traits. At both sites, nest guarding effort decreased with increasing nestling provisioning rate, suggesting a trade-off between these activities. However, regardless of provisioning rate, fantails spent more time guarding their nests on Rota than in Australia. I could not compare adult survival between study sites because color bands caused leg injuries on Rota, while I did not observe band-related injuries in Australia. Site-specific differences in the prevalence of band-related injuries may reflect variation in the frequency with which fantails encounter spider webs, since injuries were caused by spider web accumulation under the bands. Overall, my results suggest that one causal explanation for life history differences between continental and insular birds is variation in age-dependent DSR due to reduced predator diversity on oceanic islands. Additionally, increased investment in offspring and slower development of nestling locomotor traits may explain some of the vulnerability of insular birds to the introduction of non-native predators.

The Effect of Bacteriophage T4 and PB-1 Infection with Tobramycin on the Survival of Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms

release date: Jan 01, 2012
The Effect of Bacteriophage T4 and PB-1 Infection with Tobramycin on the Survival of Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms
Populations of bacterial cells growing as biofilms demonstrate greater resistance to antibiotics compared to planktonic cells. Consequently, there is renewed interest in bacteriophage therapy as an alternative to antimicrobial chemotherapy. Although phages may be more effective than antibiotics alone in reducing biofilm mass, they are often not able to eradicate the biofilm. The aim of this study was to determine if bacteriophage in combination with an antimicrobial would be more effective in decreasing biofilm mass compared to the use of either antibiotic or phage alone. It was also of interest to determine if the combination of phage and antibiotic could reduce the emergence of either antibiotic or phage resistant mutants. Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa 48 h biofilms were challenged with phage T4 or PB-1, respectively, in combination with tobramycin. At 6 h and 24 h post challenge, total cells, tobramycin resistant cells, and phage resistant cells were determined. The use of phage in combination with antibiotic resulted in an enhanced reduction of E. coli biofilms compared to either phage or antibiotic alone. The combination of phage and antibiotic resulted in a reduction in P. aeruginosa biofilms compared to phage alone. The combination of phage with antibiotic resulted in a reduced emergence of phage resistant (39% to 99%) and antibiotic resistant (26% tou003e99%) cells compared to treatment with either phage or antibiotic alone. The study suggests the combination of phage and antibiotic is more effective in reducing both biofilm mass and the emergence of resistance than the use of either phage or antibiotic alone. The study also suggests biofilm survival is dependent on the phage-host system.

Big Trouble for the Big Three

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Big Trouble for the Big Three
The importance of image management has created the need to for organizations to continually work in order to improve their image or defend it against perceived threats. Since organizations engage in a constant struggle to preserve their reputation, it is important to understand the persuasive discourse associated with image repair strategies. In addition, a successful rhetor must also acknowledge the importance of perception of the appropriateness and effectiveness of the apologetic discourse from the perspective of an audience. Focus groups were conducted and analyzed in order to better understand the perceived appropriateness and effectiveness of the image repair strategies employed by the Big Three Automakers as perceived by the audience. The findings of this study complement the original findings of Benoit and Drew''s quantitative study assessing the appropriateness and effectiveness of image repair strategies in an interpersonal setting. However, there were observable differences between the studies in terms of the perception of both the appropriateness and effectiveness of bolstering and the effectiveness of differentiation. The implications of these differences can be important in developing a better understanding of the utilization of image repair strategies in the apologetic discourse of organizations. Specifically, the results demonstrate how the audience determines the appropriateness and effectiveness of the strategies and how rhetors are able to successfully use different strategies based in context.

The Effects of Hands-on Instructional Strategies on Fourth Grade Students' Attitudes and Performance in Mathematics
This study summarizes research conducted in a fourth grade classroom in a suburban elementary school in the fall of 2005. This study investigated the practice of using hands-on instructional strategies, enhanced with technology, to improve students'' attitudes and performance in mathematics. The classroom teacher supplemented conventional mathematics instruction with hands-on activities. Attitudinal data were collected using a pre- and post anxiety survey as well as journal writing assignments and student interviews. Performance data was collected using evaluative assessments. Results of this study showed a positive change in students'' attitude towards mathematics. Student performance gains were recorded and analyzed throughout the 12-week study. Twenty of the 26 students who participated in the study scored satisfactorily on all evaluative assessments. Data indicated little change was evident in student performance on assessments due to the high performing students who participated in the study.
