The War is On!

release date: Apr 24, 2007
The War is On!
On July 21, 1861, two inexperienced armies of a divided nation clashed for the first time in Manassas, Virginia. As the 35,000-strong Union forces began their long-awaited campaign to capture Richmond, the public gathered to watch what they thought would be a colorful pageantry. Neither the citizens nor the soldiers could conceive of the long war that lay ahead. Culminating in a stalwart defensive fight by Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson''s Virginia Brigade, the Battle of Bull Run marked the Confederacy''s first victory. By the day''s end, after ten hours of fierce fighting, soldiers on both sides were shocked by the violence and destruction they had encountered. As the Union army retreated they took with them any notion that the war''s outcome would be decided quickly. This book vividly evokes the real-life experiences of the men on the battlefield in graphic novel format and includes eight additional pages of background information detailing the key players, the experience of the forces, and the aftermath of the battle.

The Battle of Guadalcanal

release date: Jan 15, 2007
The Battle of Guadalcanal
Americau0092s u0093island hoppingu0094 strategy to inch closer and closer to the Japanese mainland was kicked into high gear after the Allied victory on and around the island of Guadalcanal in the southern Solomon Islands in early 1943. The six-month campaign was the first important combined arms Allied victory in the Pacific, putting Japan on the defensive for the rest of the war, resulting in repeated victories for America and its allies, until the Japanu0092s surrender in August 1945.

The Battle of Iwo Jima

release date: Jan 15, 2007
The Battle of Iwo Jima
World War IIu0092s most enduring photographic image, that of U.S. troops raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi, was taken during the successful U.S. invasion of the tiny island of Iwo Jima. The U.S. victory was critical to Allied plans because the captured airfields on the island would provide a landing and refueling site for American bombers on missions to and from Japan. The furious battle against Japanese troops dug into a complex system of caves and tunnels is one of the waru0092s most memorable struggles.

Surprise Attack!

release date: Oct 24, 2006
Surprise Attack!
The first major Civil War battle in the Western theater, Shiloh came as a horrifying shock to both the American public and those in arms. On April 6, 1862, Confederate forces staged a surprise attack on the Union army encamped along the Tennessee River. Fighting was fierce as General Grant struggled to hold off the enemy until his reinforcements arrived the following day so that he could ''Whip ''em tomorrow''. Though nearly driven into the Tennessee River, the Union army could ultimately claim victory - won at a dear cost. With nearly 24,000 total casualties in two days'' fighting, ''Bloody Shiloh'' served as a wake-up call to the nation, announcing that the continuing fight for the Union would be devastating for both sides. Surprise Attack! brings to life one of the Civil War''s bloodiest battles in highly accessible graphic novel format. It also includes eight pages of authoritative background information placing Shiloh in its historical context, detailing the key players, and describing the build-up to the fighting and its aftermath.

The Battle of Antietam

release date: Aug 15, 2006
The Battle of Antietam
By the 1850s, there were many economic and political differences between the Northern and Southern states in America. The biggest difference was over the issue of slavery. The South''s economy depended upon slaves to work the plantations that grew crops such as tobacco and cotton. In the North, slavery was illegal. When Abraham Lincoln, an antislavery candidate, was elected president in 1860, the South believed that their way of life would be destroyed. Soon after, South Carolina seceded, or left, the Union. More Southern states followed. They formed the Confederate States of America, a separate government. Anger built between the two sides. Finally, on April 12, 1861, Southern forces bombed Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Over the next four years, many bloody battles were fought, but none more terrible than the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. On that day, more than 23,000 American soldiers were killed or wounded-more than on any other day in U.S. history. Book jacket.
